Who bags a 4 wood
Driver, 4 wood, 20-21* hybrid, 4i-pw, 52*, 58*, 64* wedges (or 52,56,50 or 50,54,58, or 50, 55, 60, etc, etc, etc, whatever you prefer) is an outstanding set makeup IMO.

I believe the 4 wood is the most versatile fairway wood in the bag. You can choke down on it and play it like a 5 wood. It's easier to work, it's easier to hit off the deck for most golfers, and with the right shaft and length, it can go just as far as most 3 woods.

Just my 2 pennies.
I am the same set up :friends: as above as soon as my Rapture J four iron arrives

My "4 wood" is a Tisi Tec 5 wood that is 1* open so it plays closer to 16*. A beast off the tee and easy peasy to elevate off the deck. If I get a flyer I can get home from 250 (over aqua) with this bad boy

I have a TisiTec 3 wood in my bag right now that gets within 15 yards of my driver but is too tough to elevate off the deck consistently, especially off of tight / downhill lies .. hence the move to put a 4i back in the bag

I always struggled to hit a 3w from the turf. Being a short hitter, this was always hurting my game because I'd find myself trying to use the 3w a lot. About 7 years ago I switched to a 16-17 deg 4w and never looked back. The slightly shorter shaft and higher loft have brought a lot of consistency to my shots from any lie (except the deep buried ones) and I don't think I've lost any yards due to the better hits. In that time I've used a TM 200steel, Cally X, and now game a 16.5 TEE CB1. Of those 3 the TEE is undoubtedly my favorite with the TM a close second.

For me it was a question of getting the ball off the deck reliably and I couldn't find a 3 wood that fit the bill. I stumbled upon an original Rapture 5 wood, which plays at 17 degrees. It goes nearly as long as a 3 wood plus I can actually hit it from the fairway. Really a no-brainer as far as my game was concerned, especially because (like the OP) I'm not going to be hitting any 550-yard par fives in two.

Mizuno F-60 (16.5°). The shaft is the same length as the 3woods I have, but the added loft helps. From the tee it is just as long as any 15° 3wood I have used, but a little more forgiving. And it is easier to hit off the fairway or out of the semi-rough.
I went from 15° 3wood, 18° 5wood and 20° hybrid to 16.5° 4wood and 18° hybrid. Now 2 clubs do what 3 clubs used to do.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.
How many of you WRX'rs carry a 4 wood. I do a 17* as I have no use for a 3 wood of 15*. I am a average distance very good golfer. 7 iron goes 155 and driver goes 245.
I carry a 4 wood at 17* for long par 3's and to advance the ball on par 5's for a second shot of 220 yards.
Also great off the tee for short or tricky par 4's. Since I can not get home on any longish par 5 in 2 shots I find the 4 wood so much more useful in the bag.
Anyone else in my club?
I originally put a TM 300 Tour 17 degree 4 wood in the bag to replace my 3 and 5 woods. This freed up a spot for an extra wedge.

However, I've now added a TM 300 Tour 3+ (13 deg) to the bag. This was simply because it was the first club I reshafted myself. I've stuck an old speeder from an R510tp into it and it is really good fun to hit. So at the moment i'm hitting the 4 on long par 3's and short par 4's and the 3+ off the deck on par 5's. 52 gap wedge is currently 'resting'.

are you guys liking the 4 wood because of the extra loft? Did you guys have trouble getting the ball up in the air with the 3wood?

I can't imagine hitting further than my current 3 wood
I can't fathom why any average to very good amateur golfer would carry a 13*, 14*, or 15* fairway wood. You don't gain much in terms of distance vs. 17* or 18* (ok, 13* vs. 18* can be significant IF you catch the 13* solid), and there's no comparison in terms of accuracy.

Consistency and accuracy are the keys to fairway woods. If you play at a course with 3 or 4 550+ yard par-5's, I suppose you could make an argument for a low-lofted fw, but to me, I don't see the advantage.

Bottom line, most players at a 3-15 hdcp will NOT hit a 13* or 14* fw off the deck consistently well. The heads are too big and the margin for error is too low. Birdies are rarely going to be made with this club.

Even this year, my game is improving, but I have moved from 16* to 17* and now 18* (Squareway, though it will be more like 16.5* with an open face), and for me I actually hit 4 and 5 woods longer than 3 woods, even off the tee.

For reference, I'm about a 5 and I hit my current 17* 4 wood 245 tee and 235 deck.
You may be right.... I can't really comment though as I only use my 14* 3 wood off the tee.

It's pretty much the size as original steel head drivers and very forgiving.

Works very well for me.

Also carry a 17* fairway for the same purpose, never hit it off the fairway. Use it when even greater accuracy is required off the tee and is only about 15 yards short of the 3 wood.

Considering I can get the 3 wood out there 270 (250-260 normal target) and play courses in the 6600-6800 yd range, driver is
rarely called for.

In fact i'd say 8/10 tee shots are with the 5 wood.

For whatever reason, I don't push these clubs way right like I sometimes do with the driver. I know it's due to the difference in swing, more hitting down than sweeping, which for me seems to encourage a push with the driver.

Waiting for a 16* Driver to get reshafted and will be trying that out as a replacement for the 14* 3 wood. It'll be 44" instead of 43" but will also have 2* more loft, so hope I get the same distance but with greater accuracy.

I am not sure if it is the head or the head and shaft combo but I do hit it longer then any 3 wood I have ever owned. I can hit a 3 wood high or low the same with my 4 wood. I seem to be able to work the 4 wood better. I even bought a Tour Exotics driver with the same type head and shaft but it did not work for me.

I carry a 4-wood and really think that the modern set is going to change into Driver, 4w, 3H/7W, 4-PW, 52, 56, 60. I imagine this works better for most player, especially with the 3H/7W you gain an extra wedge and don't really lose much.

That being said I the courses I play are just around 7000 yards, and being an average hitter (~105ss) I am not really challenging 575+ par 5s anyway.

The shorter shaft and bit extra loft make the 4 wood more hittable off both the deck or off the tee. Honestly I think my 4 wood is only about 5 yards shorter than my old 3 off the deck and maybe 10 off the tee.

I just started carrying both a 3W 909F2 15.5* 83g WB AND a 4W Dymo 4 17* 73g BB.
Crazy you say!?!?!? But for my swing they play completely differently.

The 3W is a beast off the tee (255+) on narrow par 4s and on 240+ roll on par 5s.
The 4W is far more shapable Rt/Lt for me for dogs or water or High/Low for protected greens and overhanging trees. Distance is about 220-235
Next club is a 20* Idea Pro Gold hybrid which I can land softly as necessary on long Par 3s.

I play a r9 4w. I love it. I used to bag a 3w, 5w, and a 3h. I hit the 3w exclusively off the tee, and the 5w from the fairway, but I pretty much hit the 5w and the 3h the same distance. The 4w is the same length as my old 980f 3 wood, but has the additional loft. Basically I feel like I still get the distance off the tee when I don't want to hit driver, but feel confident enough to hit it off the fairway. Plus, the change has allowed me to bag a GW, which solved the biggest gap in my bag which was between my SW and PW.

I recently added a TM r7 ST TP 4 wood that's bent 2* open so I get an effective loft near 15* and it's 1* flat so that I could add a 1/2" in length making it a standard 3W length club. Like many others, the versatility has been incredible for me and the length, accuracy and look of this club at address are second to none. Best move for me too.

I just picked up a used Ping G10 4 wood (17*). I'm not sure if it's going to replace my 15* TM 3 wood, or rotate with it. I'm definitely more confident with it (vs. my 3 wood)from the fairway, but I'm more likely to hit my hybrid from the fairway anyway. I hit the 4 wood higher and a bit shorter, which is OK other than when I'm hitting into the wind and want a lower trajectory(then I'm going to want my 3 wood off the tee). I took my 5 wood out of my bag a few years ago, and had put in a 7 wood for a better yardage gap. Since then I replaced the 7 wood and 3 and 4 irons with hybrids.

No, it was really a loft thing with me, as I suspect it is with a lot of people. I don't generate too much club speed so elevating a lower lofted club off the ground is tough unless I swing out of my shoes. I was hoping to find a 3-wood that worked despite my limitations, but I basically gave up and went with a higher loft. The rather large size of the Rapture fairway's head doesn't bother me.

I've been playing a 4 wood for many years now.

Mine is the original CB1 Exotics 4 Wood.

I have mine shafted with a GD Pershing at 43". Depending if I play it to end of the grip or choke it up, it pretty much serves as a 3, 4, or 5 wood. Leaves room for an extra wedge, which is important to me. I've always said I do a lot more scoring from 150 in than 230 out.

At the two courses I play the most, there are quite a few tricked up holes where the fairways run out. On a few, you can only get out 235-245 max. Great for a choke up 4 wood. Two of the par fives are beasts and I can go right to end of the grip to get a few more yards.

Don't miss having having both 3 & 5 woods at all.

Gotta go with this too. Just can't hit those darn hybrids as well as my 7w. Just got a XCV-G 4w and this thing is longer then my 3w off the tee and easier to hit off the fairway. My 7w is one club I have used for over 15yrs. I have turned many a player onto a 7w but now the hybrids rule for most but not me.

I tried lots of diiferent woods to siut my game but i decided on a Rapture V2 17* hybrid which is basicaly a 4 wood with a shorter shaft. I have a much better iron swing than wood swing so the hybrid really works for me. I can easily get 220 yards from the tee and over 200 from the fairway. I play to a 7 handicap and find a low lofted hybrid to be more usefull to my game than a wood.
