Exotics XCG-V fairway shaft advice

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up an XCG-V 4 wood with a Voodoo reg flex shaft in a local golf shop's used club bin. After reading all the hype about the Exotics line , mainly on here, when I saw it , I jumped on it. I thought 175 was a bargin. I want to say this is the best fairway wood I think I have ever hit. Now that I am hooked I want to get probably a 7wood . Since there is no one close that carries the line to try them out I am not sure if I should get another Voodoo or go with the Tour AD shaft. I am pushing 50 and have a SS of around 90 to 95. I have play 4 rounds with the 4w Voodoo and I have been happy with it. Off the tee I hit it a little high. Off the fairway I get a mid flight out of it. Distance has been good for me also. 230 tee and 210 fairway. My natural shot pattern is a draw and I get this out of this club . This club feels right to me and I have always like heavier shafts. I call the closest golf shop that carries the line. I wanted to make sure they had them before traveling over an hr. The guy said he didn't have any with the Voodoo but questioned why I would want that shaft in the first place considering my age etc. If he had both I would probably have put more into what he said. I would have taken my 4w there and compared a 4w with the AD and got fitted but he didn't have a 4w either. Any opinions? On the shafts...I thought a reg is a reg. I know different shafts perform differently. What is the difference in these two shafts. Thanks to all for any replies.

I don't think you are swinging to slow for the voodoo in reg flex especially. I think you'll get a lot of control out of it! That being said, I might would consider the XCG-V hybrid instead of a 7 wood.... maybe get the 4 hybrid. you may have more versatility and consistency with it than a wood.

Just a thought.

Hi. I've hit the XCG-V 3 wood (not 4 wood) with the Voodoo and thought it was the best 3 wood ever. I have no experience with the other shaft, but I don't see how you could go wrong with the Voodoo. Try teeing it a little lower to get a lower ball flight if you aren't already. I've got a V2 fairway in my XCG and LOVE it. I hit a high ball and this thing is perfect for me.

Might want to check out their hybrids instead of going to a 7 wood. I've only tried the CB2 hybrids and they were nasty long. More options with a hybrid than a wood- for me anyway. Probably cheaper, too.

Good luck with your search!

I swapped the Std Stiff Voodoo for a Ozik 8M2 XS tipped 1" ... now my XCG-V Tour Spec 3 wood is a game improvement club ... straight & 250 yds plus.

Good luck ...

Thanks for the replies.. Yea I know ..The hybrids. I grew up with that old 7w in my bag. I havn't hit the exotics hybrids but I have the Cobra 3, and 4 hybrids. I don't hit them as well as my 4i or my 7w. Been hitting a 7w since I started playing and still hit it well. I know it's me but the hybrids don't seem to work as well for me.

Hey, I know this might be a topic change, but out of curiosity, what shaft(s) do you have for your L5V? I've got one as well.

I just have the stock shaft. Diamana Red 50 in the L5V. I hit it well and it feels good to me. I have an L4V with a stock Diamana 57 and one with a Graphite Design YS5+. I had a S9-1 F and I hated the stock shaft that came in that. All regular flex.
Sounds like the Voodoo is working just fine for you, and no reason it shouldn't. The XCGV gets the ball up fairly well (possibly too well) with good carry, and the Voodoo should give decent control. If I was you, I would choose exactly the same for a 7 wood.
Thanks. I really like what I have. I just let the thought get into my head after hearing that guy say that maybe the other might be better. I am not all that on all these shafts and not having my local shop carrying these I am sort of buying and trying and at these prices I can't afford that on these.

Yikes! Nice work getting back to swinging after that. My guess, if you never had the "X" flex days, is that you found the fairway far more often than I do. Remember: The woods are filled with long hitters!

I also agree with mjtoal about sticking with the Voodoo. If it ain't broke...

The stock "Redboard" in the L5 and I didn't get along. I was making it rain by seeding the clouds. A bit too high for me. If you can, find some adapters and different shafts. That L5 is a different animal with each. I'm still experimenting.

A lot of guys in stores don't know what they are talking about. If you hit the ball well and like the way it feels and sets up, stick with it.

I think the stock GD Ad shaft in the TEEs is not very good.

I have 100mph driver speed and have a TEE 4 wood in Voodoo stiff. I find it very easy to get flighted, in fact, too easy and it goes too high and balloons a bit for me. The Golfsmith clubmaking website shows 85-95 mph as the swing speed range for Voodoo R, so you are right in the zone.

Again thanks alot. This makes me feel alot better. I looked around for some info on the shaft and somehow didn't come across the rated SS . Here it is right in your link. Thanks. It seems to go a little high off the tee for me but it isn't ballooning. Still figuring it out. Havn't had any range time with it so it has been a few shots each round with it. I have hit it alot better then what I had and what I had was decent for me. My buddies are buzzing about it but the price knocks their buzz down some. If anything, I think the head is a little big to my liking but I wasn't sure about the xcg. Any way I ordered a 7w last night from a sponsor on here with the Voodoo. I havn't heard anything today but I am waiting like a little kid. Men and their toys.
