What training aids should I get?

Going to get at least 3 lessons this winter. Thinking about getting a hitting net, medicus, momentus, or something else. Already using a weighted iron with two 3 inch washers to practice my tempo. Trainer said to do that if I didn't want to buy the medicus he recommended.

I ordered a Medicus the other week from their website. Get an email saying a "women's medicus" is on the way. I call ten minutes after they open. They say it is too late and the item left for me already. I will have to mail it back if I don't want it, then wait another week to receive the new one (2.5 weeks from time of order). I had paid 2nd day shipping and got the item one week later. To make things worse, two days after I spoke with them on the phone and they "could not stop the order as it was already shipped" I get a UPS tracking email saying my item was shipped out (two days after I ordered). Also, the box that came in was cut in half, then taped together over and over again. They actually cut down the regular box to make shipping cheaper on the womens driver which was shorter. Looked like it had been thrown out the window while the UPS truck was going down the highway. They lied to me, sent me the wrong item, box looked like it was falling apart... I sent it back and will never buy anything from them again.

Got a Momentus heavy driver a few weeks back. It was exactly the opposite experience. Got it within a week via UPS ground and it was in a brand new (uncut, untaped up) box:) Wonderful training aid and I look forward to using it alot. Helps with tempo/timing, builds golf muscles, and grooves the swing. It actually works. You can hit the ball a LONG ways with this thing too. I was quite impressed. I am excited to see what the long term use will bring to my golf game. Initial thoughts are most impressive. Came with a free weighted lob wedge and a nice instruction dvd. Great product. Ordered directly from the Momentus website.


Sorry for the rant on the Medicus, they just got under my skin. The product may work, but I will never find out.


One thing that has helped me, reading online of course, and buying instructional dvds/books. I have got some great books in recent months. I will list a few items below and you can read up on them if interested. Most items can be ordered from Amazon.

Secrets of the Shortgame (2 dvd set) by Phil Mickelson (great dvds)

Pure Point Golf, they have about 12 dvds. I got two putting dvds, short game, perfect impact, and full swing. Great dvds by Bobby Eldridge. You can get them much cheaper by buying groups of dvds, like 3 at a time. Buy from the Pure Point Golf website. Lots of dvds on various aspects of the game. Well made and high quality video/audio.

Be careful with the medicus. People try too hard to make that hinge not break and it ruins their rhythm as their backswing gets way too slow.

Also be careful not to overswing that weighted club as that can cause injury to your wrists and shoudlers (this was pointed out in a thread on another message board).

Overswinging just doens't cover swinging hard, it also means a long backswing.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will be taking all this into consideration and look at some books and DVDs. One the first things that my instructor told me was to think half swing because I was going way to far back in my backswing. I always wondered why my right bicep was sore the next day after golfing. I was using my right arm to pull the club back to far and bending my right elbow. I am sure the more lessons will help.
