Looking for a 64* wedge

asianplow

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of getting some new wedges for the upcoming year. Up to this point, I use to carry a 52, 56, 60, but decided to go with 53, 58, and possibly 63-64 degree wedges. This 64* wedge won't be in the bag full time as it will get swapped in and out for a 3 iron. I want something to compliment the Scratch wedges in 53 and 58 that I'm getting, but unfortunetly, it doesn't appear that Scratch makes a 64*. Any suggestions out there?

Callaway makes the the x-forged and the jaws in a 64. The Callys are forged. Are your Scratch's the 1018s or the 8620s? If your scratchs are cast, I would go with the vokeys, but if you have the 1018s the Callys would be better with your set-up.

The one's I'm getting are the 1018's.

The wedges I have been playing for the last few years have been Sonartec's t35 and some mizzuno's raw. I've never played cally wedges before, and the last time I've played titleist was the first year they came out with the spin milled.

My thought around the 64* is more of a speciality wedge, not used all that often. Would mainly use it with the face open, so would need one with a pretty versitle grind. If that makes sense.

Callaways can be ordered with the c-grind sole which is very good with the face laid open. I have a callaway x-forged in 58 and I mainly play it with an open face and I like it a lot. I have not hit a 64 version but I imagine it would be what your looking for.

Is the c-grind easy to come by? Is it something that stores would have on hand, or do you have to special order them?
Pretty sure Callaways 58'+ mostly have the C-grind. I would say it would be harder to find one without it.
So I went to Callaway's website and was looking at spec's. This is what they have listed for the 64*... "64 SS/MD". Not sure what the "SS" stands for. I looked at other lofts and it would list out as "60 CG/MD", which I'm reading as C-Grind with Mac Daddy grooves.
Cleveland also carries a variety of 64* wedges. I have been using the Cleveland wedges lately and i think they are great.

If looking for a unique tour vokey, i have a 3XB Vokey 64* Spin Milled brand new, if interested. Thanks.
I just looked at your WITB, and all I can say is "HOLY CRAP"!!! Saw your pic of the 64* and I just might be interested.

I have a Cleveland and a Vokey in 64, so far. I like the Vokey more than the Cleveland. I just bought my first Callaway X Forged, but in a 56. If I like it I might try it in 64.

I'm happy with all the clubs in my bag, except my wedges. I am working on those now to find out what will be in the bag for 2010.

What do you like about the Titleist more than the Cleveland? I notieced in your sig that you're replacing the 56* 1018 with the X Forged. Any reasons why?

I like the feel of the Vokey. The contact feels more like my irons than the Cleveland. It's just a better match to what's in the bag. Because of that, I think, I just seem to be a little better with shots you need a 64 for with the Vokey. If my irons were cast, I might like the Cleveland better.

First, I am not replacing the 1018 with the Cally, maybe. They Cally is just my latest 56* purchase. It's one of about six 56* wedges I have purchased in the last month or so. I think I have about ten total now. The Cally is auditioning. I also have purchased a few of GW's too. (50 - 53 range.)

Me and the 1018 don't really get along. Two reasons. One is the shape. It's a pretty square club head. In my great wedge experiment I have going on, I have found that I do much better with the tear drop shape. It's just better for my wedge game. Second is the weight distribution. The Scratch has the longest hosel (and heaviest) of any wedge I've purchased or remember seeing. I constantly hit the 1018 closer to the heel than any other wedge. That is, until I drilled 13 grams of weight out of the hosel so that I could feel the club face better. It became a much better performing club then, for me that is. If it wasn't for the square leading edge, that might have been good enough to keep it in the bag.

The money I've spent to find the wedges I like best has lead me to look for a wedge that is forged and pretty soft, has a tear drop design, a bit of a dulled leading edge, some trailing relief and a short to only average length/weight hosel. I didn't have a Cally yet and the X Forged seems to fit that description. We'll see if it stays or goes.

I stopped by the golf shop to take a look at the wedges. Unfortunetly we don't have to many golf shops in my city so selection is very limited at best, especially during winter. They had the Spin Milled, X Forged, and the new Mizuno's. They all look apealing to the eye. Didn't hit any, just held them and setted them up. Out of the three, the X Forged seemed to lay open the best for me. They didn't have any newer Cleveland's.

Any other manufactuers out there? Doesn't have to be main stream either.

Surprised no one has mentioned the MP T-10's yet. This is a great wedge, though the quad cut grooves are not legal for tournament play, if that's important to you. They make a 64 degree in the black nickel only (not satin nickel). I'm thinking about picking one of those up, unless Scratch decides to open up the 1018 line to 64 degrees.
I have the 64 degree xforged - seriously, its like cheating. Use it all the time around the green - easy to use and will drop you a bunch of strokes if you practice some.
Same here.. also great out out the type of bunkers on the courses around here - often with hard and shallow sand.
