It's akin to going up and asking your boss how much he makes and what kinda perks and kickbacks he gets from the company. Thats inappropriate.
Last post, because we're really going off topic from the OP.

Most people can find out what the boss of their company makes by looking on Forbes.com or any other place where stock market information is available. Obviously this is only the case for publicly traded companies.

1. What's your current job?
Insurance Agent personal lines(auto, home, personal liability, motorcycle etc)

2. How long have you been working in that specific field?
3 years now

3. Do you have a college degree? (If so an Associates or Bachelors and what major)
No was not my thing
4. Do you enjoy your job?
Yes very much, flexible scheduling plenty of vacation and working with a bunch of people that are happy to be here

5. What's your salary?
depends on how much I sell, but my base is enough to cover all my bills and golf etc, the commsions are just a nice bonus.
6. Does your job allow time for hobbies?
I work the afternoon shift from 2pm-10:30pm which allows me to play golf before work.

7. What would you change about your job?
nothing

Feel free to answer any or all of the above questions and/or include tips/personal experiences.

If you go the sales route build your budget around your base salary not your expected commsions. Even if you are a top producer the commsion checks are never garaunteed and its a good way to get yourself overextended in a hurry.

I'm a first year college student at the University of Cincinnati and was wondering what you guys do for a living. Here are my questions:

1. What's your current job?
2. How long have you been working in that specific field?
3. Do you have a college degree? (If so an Associates or Bachelors and what major)
4. Do you enjoy your job?
5. What's your salary?
6. Does your job allow time for hobbies?
7. What would you change about your job?

Feel free to answer any or all of the above questions and/or include tips/personal experiences.

1. Manager of finance for a Fortune 20 corporation.
2. More than ten years.
3. Yes, Bachelor of Science. Currently attending graduate business school and working full-time.
4. Yes, very much. The people I work for, the people I work with, and the people who work for me are outstanding.
5. My compensation is fair. I work hard and take pride in what I do, and I am fairly compensated for it.
6. Not much right now. I have a long commute to and from my office and have a young child at home. Add graduate school some evenings and weekends and a 60-ish hour work week means I don't have much time for hobbies.
7. Not much. I do wish my office was closer - much closer - to my home. I had a couple of mis-steps early in my career but I have managed to make up for it.

PM me if you want more specifics, happy to give you more information in private.

Ping. Play Your Best.

Thanks for the responses. The post was created because I am in a crossroad on what major to choose. The three most important questions I'm looking at are #4, 6, and 7. There seems to be a correlation between what job you have and your happiness (maybe not in this thread but in research studies). It also seems that you could have two people that work in the same field and have completely different experiences. As of now I've decided on Computer Science but in the end who knows what degree I'll end up with...I certainly don't!

Feel free to keep the responses coming.

As far as picking your major goes, pick something that you enjoy studying. Take advantage of and enjoy your time in the classroom.

The major you pick has very little and sometimes zero bearing on what your career is going to be, so pick something that you want to learn about and you want to study. You can make career decisions later.

If you like Computer Science, study Computer Science.
If you like History, study History.
If you like Anthropology, study Anthropology.

Ping. Play Your Best.

Seems like just yesterday I was going through this same thought process. Like some have said, you should study what interests you. You will do better at it and it will make you want to learn. But on the other hand there are some areas that I wish I would have focused on that I did not enjoy as much therefore did not study. I have a degree in Economics and really enjoyed it and has provided what I feel is a great overall business foundation. I really wish I would have majored or at least minored in accounting. My personal view is that if you have any aspirations to own your own company (big or small) it is something that will allow for the most success. Accounting and Finance are so integral in operating anything, you simply cannot have enough information or ability in these fields. That said, accountants are not always the best at operating a business (no offense to anyone) but someone who is business savvy in their field and has a strong accounting and financial understanding is a force to be reckoned with. Even if you have no intent to operate your own business it can play strongly towards moving up in a company, an employee who understands the bottom line and can do their work according to what is profitable it an asset. Not to mention how much it can help someone manage their own affairs and household finances.
Again this is just some insight I would apply to myself 15 years ago. Best of luck
