Membership costs on the South Shore?

I've been thinking of joining a lower end club, but cost is obviously a HUGE factor, as is driving distance(I live in Easton - I want to be able to get out near the house so I can go more often).

I'm not talking Pinehills or anything like that.

Easton CC is too expensive for the course IMO (2K)

I was told Halifax CC dropped to <1500 last year, but I guess there are minimum monthlies that you have to meet- not sure what the total would be, and it is probably as far as I would want to go,

Foxboro- Too expensive(2700 ?)

Norton- Too expensive(2775- weekday only 1450) < Edited

Pine Oaks- Too expensive for a 9 hole course(1450)

Poquoy- Great deal (2100-2500 depending on when you join) for what you get, a little further than I'd like

Am I missing something?

Thanks

Have you thought of Harmon Golf in Rockland? It's a great facility. It has a nine hole course, a very large driving range, a bunker complex, two huge practice greens, a short course where the average hole is about 73 yards long, a pitching range, and a gym. The restaurant is very good as well. Harmon also has a terrific learning center with all the latest technology and some very good pros.

I don't remember what I paid to join, but it was reasonable. There are no food/bar minimums or stuff like that. Just your monthly fee.

If you are interested, contact Jim Battista and tell him Sean recommended the facility. Good luck!

I appreciate your input.

Rockland isn't too far miles wise, a bit of a pita because of where it is.
I just went to their site, it's $500 to join and 185 a month but if I golf for 7 months it's 1295 + 500 = 1795, of course that is with unlimited practice as well.

Easton CC has awful practice facilities(green is OK- but 2K is too much)
Poquoy has decent practice green and range
Pine Oaks is only 9 holes(more waiting), and has NO Practice facility( 1450 is a ripoff IMO)

I think Poquoy is far and away the best deal in this area, but one of the BIGGEST problems isn't just what I have to pay, but I golf ALOT with my brother who doesn't make much $, so going to a course that he will have to pay $40+ every single week isn't gonna happen, I also play alot with my cousin, and we play better courses, but even still like to NOT have to pay 40+ everytime out.
My brother likes to golf at DW Field park (when it's in decent shape) because it's fairly cheap- weekend play- before 1:00pm is 40- after it's 30-35 and that INCLUDES a cart, my cousin likes to play here too for the same reason, although he has more $ than I do.

In the past I have preferred Poquoy for what ya get for the $- good conditions are the norm, Olde Scotland links too, but they are like $65 on the weekends(with a cart- my brother and cousin need- I don't mind either way) and that's a bit high for my brother, my cousin lives in Bridgewater so he pays a bit less to play at Scotty.

Now you may understand why the Fee is so important, as I need to get a place that's decent, but not too expensive for not only the membership fee, but for my family/friends to play as well.......I don't want to be playing ALOT of different courses if I am already paying good $ to be a member somewhere (good $ is relative- I can afford to play, but I want to be able to easily play alot for a decent $).

DW used to have memberships years ago, and IIRC they were pretty cheap, I can't find any evidence of them still having memberships.

I want to be a member somewhere nearby (and low in cost) to be able to play ALOT, and if we want to go to a nice track we can do that once in awhile.......like when I was younger, I played DW/Pine oaks and when I wanted a better track I went to Poquoy/atlantic, etc.......

I really only golf with 2 people, except my friends at work once in awhile.

Thanks Again

Try Braintree Municipal, best municipal I've played IMHO. Am not sure about this year but you might get a good round the year deal if you talk to them in person and enjoy full membership benefits.

I played Braintree twice..
1st time with an Old friend, it was in great shape, had a great time for a reasonable price
2nd time I brought my afforementioned brother, and it was in horrendous shape and he hated it(was really REALLY wet)
It's 1950 for full 7 day, 1350 for weekdays (non-resident)
1500 for resident full membership- VG deal for Braintree and I would most seriously consider that if I lived in Braintree......of course I'd have to add ball fees to that cost with the narrow fairways and water!!

Another course we went to last year that was a VG course for the $( IMO ) and that is Acushnet River Valley.
They have season passes (20 rounds or 40 rds- from their website below):

P R O 20 pass=20 Rounds of Golf/Cart..........$799
P R O 40 Pass= 40 Rounds of Golf/Cart.........$1500

VVG deal for that place, problem is I was hoping to join a place alot closer to home for that quick jet out to shoot 9 (or less) etc, and that is a pass counting your rds, and I would be screwed just jumping on to play 5 holes when I had really limited time, etc........

Thanks tommy

  • 11 months later...

Back again a year later..same thing!!

This year is looking a bit more promising though, as my cousin is now very interested in joining a club too.

DW is 1050 Resident, 1350 Non (I'm non- he owns property there)
Easton CC is still 2K, and they take off like $4 for cart rental if you wanna take a cart(ends up $11)
You get a preferred Tee-Time if you want one, right now it's around 9:30am, which kinda sux really, as I like 6:30-7:30 myself(depending on the season).
If 9:30 is the earliest I can use my privileges on the weekend, then Easton is out of it- will have to inquire about that.

Poqouy is the same, right now it's 2300
Pembroke is 2500 W/Cart

Poqouy is good, wish it were a bit closer.............Pembroke is just further than I'd like, it would have to be alot cheaper for me to join there.

I actually like the layout of DW(always have), I wish they took better care of it, and there wasn't quite as much riff-raff, if you don't get out early enough your rds can EASILY be 5 Hr rds, as they have no rangers out on the course.

Easton is the better course, their greens are usually in great shape, and will punish you if you are on the wrong side...wish the drainage was better for the rainy times..the rangers there can be a bit overzealous as well, but I guess it's better than no rangers like DW.

I've sent out questions to:
Ridder
Norton
Halifax (gonna be way too much)
Foxborough

Ridder is a bit further than I'd like(at least Poquoy is all Highway, Whitman is in no mans land ~30 minutes), Norton is fairly close(<20 minutes), Halifax is kinda like Ridder(only a much better course-said to be a gem), and I've never seen Foxborough, but it's ~20 minutes away.
I looked at the season passes available at Acushnet River Valley, and the prices are fab($40 W Cart- less walking), too bad they don't let you use the pass before 12PM on the Weekend....not to mention it's > 30 minutes in one direction.
I like Norton quite a bit, but you can't get out there on the weekend before 12 unless your a member, and I think it was 2700 last year....I got out one Sunday at 6:30am, don't know how, but they didn't let me book another early time after that (I'm guessing an intern made a mistake), so I never golfed there again.

Anyone know of any good deals going on in this neck of the woods?
Where are all the great deals in this recession!!

Yep, ~ 9:30 Tee Time @ Easton CC unless I get lucky and someone cancels and then it filters down as an earlier time for folks to use if they want.......I of course would not have ANY seniority, so I would be last to get a shot at an earlier time.

No way in hell I am going to pay ~2K to have a Tee Time at 9:30, ANYWHERE

What a waste of my time...........looks like I'll be doing The TeeTime Dance every week like I have been, at least I can get Tee Times around 6:30, and I won't be relegated to one course.

Although I should have, this is something I never even gave alot of thought about really, and will definitely make me stay a greens fee patron.....
The advantages of having a membership are severely outweighed by the ridiculous Tee Times.

It would take me like 100 years to get a decent time, and then I'd be in depends and it would take me 6 hours to complete 9 holes, all the while my nurse would be wiping the drool off my straw....I'm all set with that.
