Bad news

just tore my ACL

Hey guys just thought I would vent my frustration. I just tore my left ACL playing basketball. surgery this friday and no golf for about 3 months. anybody else have a serious injury like this before?

Don't worry man, had 4, 3 on the left knee plus meniscus and 1 on right plus meniscus.
At first it is frustrating but everything will be ok after 4 to 6 months.
Do you know are they using to replace it?
Hamstring twice for me i think pretty solid on my last two one on each side.

Man I feel bad for you. It seems like those injuries always come just as golf season is coming around. Basketball has certainly caused me enough problems over the years(maybe at 46 its time to hang it up), thought I had an ACL just last year, fortuantly only a sprain. Did rupture a tendon in the pinkie finger of my left hand. If they hadn't repaired it it would have been useless for anything, that was a couple of months with no golf. The only positive is that the time really does go by pretty quickly and you'll be back out there before you know it.

Had it done.. No lie, expect pain after surgery and during rehab process, but your knee will be stronger that it was before the injury.. Gotta get the hammy strong to prevent the acl from tearing again!

Sorry to hear that. I tore the meniscus in my right knee last year and ended up being out for about 6 weeks or so. Definitely go all out on the rehab/physical therapy. My surgeon was great and his recovery timetable was spot on. I injured mine last May and had the surgery in late June. I basically missed half the golf season, which was the worst part. It also took a while after I started playing again before I felt comfortable really putting a lot of weight/stress on the knee - it's just a mental hurdle to get over. Just try to stay positive - good luck with everything.

For those 40-somethings still playing basketball....quit now.

I was in a low key, soft contact, once a week after work league and guys were blowing out knees and tearing achilles tendons. It seemed like each week somebody was going down.

Just had to admit I can't do the things I used to.... ...sad.

But, lowered the risk of golf season ending injury.....glad.

Sorry to hear about that. I tore my ACL back in 1997 playing basketball.

And as previously mentioned - be dedicated to your rehab. I slacked off with mine and had to have a second surgery to go in and clean out the scar tissue and then go through a 2nd stint of rehab. You're going to hate your PT (physical therapist or pain and torture) but the hard work is going to pay off at the end.

Rehab is incredibly important. Don't slouch on the post-surgery exercises like leg lifts, making the alphabet with your feet, etc just because you're sore or it doesn't seem like they do anything. Your muscles will atrophy to some degree, and the more they do the harder it will be to get back to 100% and the less stable your knee will be in the meantime. On the other hand, don't push it by walking a lot or spending a lot of time on your feet once it starts to feel good - you'll be eager to get back to feeling like you're 100% when there's still more healing that has to be done beyond the point where you feel consistent pain. Just because you can walk or jump around, don't. Stick to the plans by your doctor and physical therapist (absolutely see a physical therapist - do not try to do it on your own - this is very important)

Im 21 and after this just happened I'm never playing basketball again. the sound alone makes me never want to play any sport but golf. surgery is friday, thanks for all the good wishes and i'll definitely not slouch on the rehab I want this knee to be healed

I did mine 8 years ago, did all the rehab and it went well but couldn't quite get it to 'normal'.

Then I started doing yoga- the combination of stretch/strengthening and balance poses now has me completely pain free.

Good luck! The surgery sucks, the recovery sucks, but 6 months out you'll be fine.

+1,000,000 on the rehab comments. I tore my left ACL 18 years ago and it just gets a bit sore today but I have no limitations. Just wish I had worked harder on rehab so I could have gotten back to full activity quicker.

Sorry to hear that. I've had both ACL's replaced and shattered my right elbow in 13 "identifiable" pieces. ACL's in 1989 (football) and 1994 (basketball), elbow in 2003.

You'll be back. Use getting back to golf as the motivation to do that extra rehab set. Plan on at least 6 months though. As someone else mentioned PT will become short for Physical Torture in your mind, you'll need something to motivate you to continue.

Also plan on a continued lifelong program of working out or else the injured joint will become weak and give you all sorts of trouble and pain. I use SCUBA and Golf as my extra motivation to work out even when I don't feel like it.

Sorry buddy, had both of mine done rehab it well as you have heard and don't get discouraged you will be playing in a few months but it takes nine months to a year for your knee to feel normal again. Ask your surgeon or anesthesiologist for a femoral nerve block before the surgery it help immensily with the pain for the first 24-36 hours

rolltide, sorry to hear about your knee. I am twelve days into recovery from a torn medial and lateral meniscus surgery. Had it done 4 years ago the first time, and I'm no spring chicken anymore. As everyone has said, do the rehab. Your recovery will be longer than mine but you will recover. I played tennis and golf with no problems following my recovery from the first surgery and I will be back playing golf again in the near future. One of the best things to get after surgery is a Polarcare. It is a cooler in which you put ice and water and it is connected via a hose to a cuff you put around your knee. You plug it in and it pumps ice water around your knee continuously. They will likely put one on you in the hospital although you will pay a little more for it. They are great! It significantly reduced my swelling. Be patient and work hard and you will be back to golf. Keep a positive attitude tool
