Today I went to the fitter outside and she believes the shafts are okay for me but was very interested in the swing weight difference from my S58's to G15's. I went to Austads and had them checked the S58's were D4 and G15 were C9. She wants me to change the swing weight and try them for awhile until June when they will be back with the fitting van and will work with me some more if needed.

I bought some lead tape at the store and weighted them out to D4 and playing tomorrow morning so we will see. I really hope this really helps!

My two swingweight guesses were pretty close then...

Sounds like a weight issue to me causing an early release.

+1 Some players really need the heavier head feel to create lag leading to release at the right point in the swing.

It took me a while to get used to my G10's. Even now if I pull out my backup Mizuno's which are 3 points higher swingweight and 30g higher total weight (steel vs graphite) my ballstriking can be noticeably better. (For regular use I need the lighter clubs for my back.)

Luckily it's easy to adjust swingweight on this line of clubs they can just swap out the weight insert.

By the way this is a great thread I can't wait to hear how it turns out.

I remember when I got my 1st set of decent clubs, they were made(component clubs) with a SW of D0- I had been swinging an old set of Forged Spaldings that had SW of around D4....

EVERYTHING was going dead right (almost sideways), it was really bad too.....
It took me awhile before I was able to adjust to the much lighter clubs, I honestly didn't think I could ever play them.

Ya, I'm wondering what the rationale was for not going to a more forgiving i15, and jumping straight back from player, skip mild, and go all the way back to Game Improvement? In a way, it's doing what it's supposed to...?

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

You need to be wary of the redistribution of weight by going back to D4 on the G15s. The swingweights may now be the same but the clubs probably won't feel the same because there is a different head/shaft proportional weight difference. The G15 probably will feel more head heavy then the S58s...hope it works though because I like Ping clubs.

Today was a lot better ball striking day the lead tape convinced me I should send in the clubs to have Ping change the swing weight. I'm going to play one more round before sending them in just to make sure. I hit a lot of 8 & 9 irons today and they were as easy to hit as the S & L wedges so I think swing weight might be the gremlin in my clubs. Wish I could have hit more 6 & 7 irons but it was a best ball tournament so I couldn't mess around.

This may sound strange but I couldn't really tell much difference between my S58's and the i15's. Most would probably say the S58's are a very forgiving players club compared to the S57's and more forgiving than the i10's.

I'm a believer in the maltby playability factor and saw no advantage to the i15's over the S58's. MPF is only a factor though and looked at the sole of the G15 as the advantage to help with my tendency to hit a little fat. What scared me was when things got worse with the G15's and my fat shots got worse as this should not be the case. I also didn't expect to miss to the right so much but I did. One of our local pro's believes I just need more time to adapt to the major club changes in look, offset and weight but after I adapt to them things will get better.

I'm a lot more hopeful after today's round. NOW IF I COULD JUST PUTT!!!

Yea, G15's suck. you should just send em to me and ill dispose of them for you.

But honestly, i think your biggest problem is playing irons whose soles are totally different. look at the bottom of the s58 then see how thin they are compared to the 15's. At ;east that was my biggest problem when i went from a thin sole to a fatter one.

I just got a set with the exact same specs as will golf 4, with the additions of a 1/4" and a blue dot. Depending on what manufacturer you are coming from these are built stock a 1/4" compared to say R9 irons, which may also be an issue for some. I am waiting for some white and black mulitcompounds to slap on before I take them out, but I will share my results when they see some game time.

Also picked up a 54 and 58 black nickel Tour W's, which look absolutely beautiful :pimp:

I agree. To your point, I also like S300 irons and expect I would like virtually any iron set with that shaft.
Change an iron shaft model and you have a compeletely different set.DG S300 has been around for decades, It works !
As for swing weight, as far as I know all Ping iron sets have alawyas been C9 at standrad length, little higher for the wedges of the set. That is Ping's standard regardless of the shaft type. The reason is that Ping's standrad shaft length is .25 inch shorter than other brands. Add a .25 inch to Ping's standard and they come out D2, D3 for the set, which is what I like and play.

What I don't understand about people and golf equipment, why just buy something for the hell of it? I mean if I was playing a set of S58's and thought I needed more forgiveness I would buy a set identical shaft, lie, swingweight to my current set. Why go from S58 with S300 to G15 with AWT? Makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm not saying G15 are the answer and I don't even play a set but IMO you should have got them closer to what you currently play. One of the big issues is probably the swingweight, a lot of players including myself can definitely feel the difference between say D3 and C9. A lot of PING's GI sets do come in the high C range.

Ping has always proclaimed C9-D0 is their standrad. That is is only a difference of one swing weight point.
For each set the wedges are 2 to 4 swing weight points higher. People used to think "Ping uses light heads", but that is not it. The reason stock Ping sets have relatively light swing weights is that the standard Ping shaft length is .25 inch shorter than the other brands.

Square,

If you go to the Ping website you can see the swingweight specs for the G15's. They are D0 until the wedges and then they get higher.

I quite like my G15 irons, but can't stand the wedges. Really wish I'd ordered a split/combo set, with i15 for the 9i and PW. I think I'm going to buy an Eye2 9 iron and use it as the PW instead of spending $130 for another PW. It took me a few rounds to get used to the wider soles and somewhat different turf interaction when I switched to the G15s, but now that I'm a solid month into the golf season, I'm hitting my irons as well as I ever have, and have actually gained some distance. Hitting lots of greens, it feels like I'm firing at the flags, and putting up really good scores, even at new courses.

WOW! I never really thought swing weight would make such a difference. Since adding the extra weight I've almost eliminated the fat shots I was experiencing. I've stopped missing to the right and my confidence is booming. Last time out I hit 9 GIR's and 4 were on the fringe. This is what I expected when I bought the G15's to replace my S58's.

I am having a similar experience with adjusting to the turf interaction. With my R7s I take a nice divot after the ball. With my G15s, I don't really feel as if I am taking a divot at all with these. I was fitted at Golf Galaxy and had the KBS Tour Stiff installed by ping. This is the same shaft I have on my R7s. Weight was never even mentioned. How did you adjust to the "turf interaction" and can you explain this a little. Thanks.

Scott

I also have the G15 irons w/KBS shafts. It does take a while to get accustomed to the feel. In my case, both the balance of the shaft and the design of the club head were so radically different from what I was used to. The more I play with them and hit balls, the more I am liking them and my confidence is growing for sure. The best way I can describe using these irons is to make sure you have the club face square at address and just swing through the ball freely, letting the sole glide through the turf through impact.
