where should we play?

All,

I'm a 5 who enjoys older traditional designs. We should have a chance to get in a couple of rounds. What are your recommendations?

Triggs, Blissfull Meadows, Blackstone National.

Plymouth Mass has some great courses.

Triggs Memorial, it is a donald ross and in right in prividence, reasonable rates and a challenging course. If you want to go south to Newport the is Newport National, that is the top public course in RI, very well maintained and also challenging. If you want to go north to MA there is Pine Hills in Plymouth MA, best public in MA.

Make sure you stop by the Caddilac Lounge in Providence if you like sleazy stip clubs....

If you wanna go east a bit, CT National is excellent. Gorgeous design, great condition, great greens.

2. Play Newport National (in Middletown) - best public course in RI

3. Head down I95 to exit 3 and play Meadow Brook - a close 2nd to best public course in RI

Born and raised in RI. Live in Warwick which is just south of Providence.

1. Newport National - 25 min drive - have to play it. Best public by far in the state imo.

2. Meadowbrook - they put about $20MM into it 2 years ago. Unreal. A must play.

3. Cranston / Triggs - about the same. I am partial to Cranston but you can't go wrong w/ either one.

Meadowbrook top of my list... cranston/ triggs also.

I've played Meadow Brook 2x already this year. Would even suggest Meadow Brook as a close 1st (to me) over Newport National for fun/skill required. Newport National works if you can hit long, but there's not much to contain the ball to your fairway, or penalize one if you miss (maybe a couple holes). Meadow Brook has a few more holes that reqire accuracy in addition to length. Also, the wind can play a big factor in the time of day vs Meadow Brook.

I played CT National in Putnam CT (about 30 min from PVD up RT 44) for the 1st time last weekend. Had a freaking blast. It's a challenge and I can see going back there again soon. Love some of the holes built into the hill-side. Don't want to walk this one. And it reminded me of...

Blackstone National, just up 146, also a great track. Also carved out of a couple hills, and another "Can't go wrong" course.

Triggs, it seems, always seems to have plugged the greens the week I visit. Did it last year, the year before that, and a couple years before that. It's fun, traditional, but always seems like a muni every time I play it (that they don't have plugged greens). It's got nostalgia, but... to me, that's all that it has going for it.

I also suggest Shenny (http://www.shennygolf.com/) down in Groton if you want another Ross course? I've had a lot more fun there than Triggs. For a Muni, it's much, much better than Triggs, IMHO.
