I'm new to this forum and starting my second year of actually playing, but surprised no one has mentioned Black Swan in Georgetown. Played there a few times and its in pretty good shape.
probably because Black Swan was formally the private Georgetown Country club. I played it a few times when it was private and never really liked it because of a few too many bad holes and let's just say the previous management/ownership had a few issues!! As a public access course though I,d say it was pretty decent.

The North Shore really does not have any decent upscale publics apart from Atkinson CC just over the border. Personally I think Atkinson is great but I know many of my golfing buddies think the back 9 has too many funky holes. After Atkinson go further north for good public golf. Portsmouth CC and The Ledges are both excellent and the greens are usually as good as most good private courses I play.

Bradford Country Club in Boston's northern suburbs is short, but plays anything but. Water needs to be contended with – and often carried – on most every hole on the front. Placement is paramount throughout the 12th hole (below), where a monster pond separates the end of the fairway from the green and the route just to get that far is tortuous.

I am good friends with the family that took over Bradford CC a couple years ago. They've done a ton of work to improve the conditions of the course. Fairways and green were in awesome shape last year. I'm hoping they go after the tee boxes this year.

I've played it a million times and it's always a challenging test with many different ways to play each hole.

Hi guys,

I'm new to GolfWRX but I play Sagamore in lynnfield most often. Between there, stow acres, and when I play with my friends who aren't really good golfers I'll hit up Newton Commonwealth. I used to play Woburn CC a lot but after the 5th time you get bored of it. My high school home course was the private Winchester CC and that was one of my favorite tracks.

I'd love to meet up and play a round or two with some WRXers so whoever is around when the weather gets better let me know!

There's a handful of choices in the greater Nashua area... all worthy of a visit.

Overlook GC in Hollis (where I call home course).
Green Meadow (36 holes) in Hudson
Amherst Country Club in Amherst
Souhegan Woods in Amherst
Passaconaway in Litchfield
Unfortunately, with the exception of Passaconaway, you can expect a minimum 5+ hour round at those courses on the weekends, especially Green Meadow where you can push close to 6 sometimes.

My buddy and I were turned off by Butterbrook our first time there. We get there and the first tee is open with nobody scheduled to go off for like 15 minutes but the pro shop gal proceeds to tell us to skip one and catch up to the twosome in front of us on the second tee. We didn't take her advice and there were zero issues of any groups behind us even getting close, even though the two guys in front of us were playing several balls and making us wait for many shots.

For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone likes Butterbrook.

One and done for me.
Different strokes. I like it, although it did take me a while to appreciate it. It's all over the map style-wise - but it has a lot of good holes and is always one of the best-conditioned publics out there IMO.

I agree with Chris, some courses you need a couple rounds under your belt to get a flavor for it. Chris is one of my golfing partners when I can get out and we have talked about that course numerous times. I will agree a course has to fit your eye. I am a HUGE Brian Silva fan, almost all of his courses fit my eye. I have never had a bad experience with course conditions there.

Except you weren't a particular fan of Breakfast Hill iirc.

And Butter Brook isn't a Silva design.

Everything Mark Mungeam knows about golf courses, he learned from Brian Silva ... between the 2 of them, they didn't learn much in my opinion.

& you have to remember, OrangeCrush sees parts of golf courses, that most of us will never see :)

Ha! One day Mike's gonna slow that swing down and kick all of our $%#^@##.

I've liked the Silva designs I've played - Breakfast Hill, Old Marsh and Red Tail.

You around Saturday? I think I'm going to be looking for a 4th - 10am-ish. Should know for sure tomorrow.

On edit - in looking at Silva's resume, I forgot he did Renaissance - which I like as well.

I played there a few weekends ago. I respect tight courses but this place is a different animal. Two yards off the fairway and you're dead on a lot of holes. I didn't love it either.

Overly tight is not how I would ever describe Butterbrook. Sure on some holes there are certainly sides of the hole which you simply need to avoid but overall the course allows a good amount of "spray" off the tee. It is simply a good, challenging golf course for which you need to be striking it well to score well.

Butterbrook can definitely be polarizing especially for first time players. I hated it the first time I played it a while back but that was mainly because I was trying to hit driver on every par 4/5. The location and conditioning drew me back and once I learned to play the course the way it is designed it has turned into one of my favorite places to play. My only real grip is that they charge about $10 too much.

Thats why I said ALMOST all of his courses! LOL I didn't want to bring up B.H. but that being said, remember I had a bad day hurting my back so my mind was not into that round. I would play it again.

I really liked Breakfast Hill the first time I played it, probably because I shot a really nice round. :) Went back the next year and they hadn't mowed the fairways, so it was like playing out of the first cut. Hadn't been back again until a couple weeks ago, I really liked it again. :)
BH was my home course for a few years, and I liked it a lot. I left as they were letting the conditions go a bit and went up to The Oaks in Somersworth. But I still have friends at BH and the last couple of years, the conditioning has gotten better again. I haven't played it this year, but it's a solid track IMO.

I was just poking around for a tune-up course to play with the Mrs. tomorrow before we head down to Miami and was shocked at the Butterbrook rate of $70 for a Friday morning, and that is their fall rates? No thanks.
Yeah - that's the other thing about Butterbrook (although some other courses do it too) - Fridays are weekends. And cart required until sometime in the afternoon, iirc.
