Play forgiving clubs...

buster

Recommended Posts

what gets me is when people say they swing better with harder to hit clubs.....

IMO

a good fundamental swing and good impact will have the same outcome with any club

a slight mishit will be different... from a GI vs a "players" club

but a bad swing and bad impact regardless what club you hit will still produce a BAD SHOT

but then again the game is also a head game... whatever makes you feel like your going to play better

I think I'm going to join the forgiving clubs club. Went to the range today and just didn't have it at all. Swing was just all over the place. Thought to myself it would be a good day to see what clubs I can hit best on a bad day. So went and got the AP2's(which thus far have been my favorite) and Diablo Forged. Hit the AP2's better than my clubs but still could tell I was having an off day. Picked up the DF's and man did it feel good. Could still feel that I wasn't puring anything but the shots just went up high and straight with a hint of a draw. Don't necessarily like the looks of the DF's but could get used to them real quick after hitting them today. By the way this was all off real grass. I think I may be getting some DF's once Callaway sorts out their issues with back orders.

Try to find some Cobra S2 Forged if you can. You might be pleasantly surprised (I know I was!)

I just ordered a set of CB2s. I'm mid-HI and tired of playing clubs I don't like to look at.

Anyway, most of us already play a "blade" type iron: our wedges. Mine don't have a cavity back, they have a long hosel, and have a narrow sole compared to my current clubs.

I'm curious: if blades and CBs are so hard to hit, why aren't there more GI and SGI wedges being manufactured and sold?
1) They are already easy to hit due to the short shaft lengths.

2) Blades, particularly in the long irons, require a lot of clubhead speed to generate sufficent height. GI and SGI allow slower clubhead speeds to generate sufficent height with long irons. However, with wedges the high loft means that even slower clubhead speeds generate sufficent height without needing the benefits of the GI and SGI clubhead designs.

3) GI and SGI clubs usually have "hot" faces as compared to blades. When hitting chips and pitches and short range approach shots, the emphasis is on distance control. There is no need for a "hot" face that can send the ball a long ways because you are already close to the green.

4) GI and SGI clubs usually have larger soles that make it harder to open up the clubface without raising the leading edge intolerably high.

I love these threads...black%20eye.gif

I've been a PGA Member since 02, and teaching for 12 years now, I will say I gradually moved into less and less forgiving clubs as I got better, now I'm gradually moving to more and more forgivness as I play less and frankly wonder why the heck I ever played a blade.

As for my students, I typically guide them into the most forgiving club that still looks good to them.

I have several guys on staff here that play blades and frankly shouldn't, if you misshits shots even semi-regularly, you have no reason to play blades.

Play what you want, but don't let your ego dictate what you play.
