Which Putting Guru do you follow?

UTLEY or STOCKTON ?

Title says it all.

Neither. I am a 4 handicap and have relied on one-one-one putting help. That means a local instructor.

I don't know whether Stockon is published or not, I know Utley is, but I have read nothing from either and don't know the details of either of their philosophies.

Neither....Pat O'Brien......Although I do follow what Utley teaches as far as the wedge game in his book "The Art of the Short Game".

Utley. His "The Art of Putting" has brought my putts per round down about 3 shots. Index now a plus. I am now a big fan.

For me it's Utley with a little Rotella thrown in........and I have a CD of a playing lessons from the pros with Brad Faxon that I watch.

+1. Me also. I liked Utley's putting style but found it quite difficult to implement. Pat's method works on the same principle but I personally find it much more straightforward. I do though use Utley for everything else from 100 yards in. His bunker technique is awesome. I often get strange looks from playing partners when I use it, but the results speak for themselves and it is sooo much simpler than the conventional method.

I seem to get a great roll of the ball using Utley's method, but it feels a bit too jabby and wristy...and Stockton says hold putter in your fingers-"would you want your surgeon holding his scapel in his palm or his fingers?" Also-Stockton is more of a shoulder swing than Utley's arm/hands swing. Also...isn't Utley's methods MUCH more high-maintenance...ie...LOTS of practice ?

He probably has measured and analysised more strokes than anyone else.
He promotes a natural gated stroke.
Very underrated.

Mike Shannon at Sea Island, GA for pure stroke mechanics

Ryan Caserta at Grand Cypress GC in Orlando, for how to properly use your eyes for distance control, aiming, smoothness of stroke and how to make putts.

David Orr at Buies Creek, NC for ALL other aspects of putting... putter fitting, green reading, concepts regarding putting, thinking about distance control and making putts.

These 3 guys have done wonders for my putting over the last two years.

BTW, not a fan of Utleys, however, Stockton has some great ideas about making putts (totally disargee on his thoughts about mechanics)

Gotta be stockton.. there was a link on here where someone put together a cliff notes of stockton book and it is really great. im not sure where that link is but if the author of the link sees this. please post the link.

I found Geoff Mangum's putting zone website through Golfwrx and it has changed my putting. It is hard to navigate, there is lots of information that I don't take the time to fully understand but there are large nuggets of GOLD if you take the time to understand them.

What I absolutely LOVE about Geoff Mangum's thinking is that he breaks putting down to four topics: Read (ing) the Green, Aim (ing) the putter, Stroking the putt (mechanics) and Distance Control.

Putting into these four buckets has made it easy for me to think about which parts I need to work on to make more putts. For example, while I work on Mechanics on my family room carpet at home, I found the area I needed to improve the most on is Green Reading, which requires me to do this on the practice green. This simple concept has significantly impacted the way I practice. For example, today I worked hard on reading each practice putt like it for a real score. I would scatter three balls are various distances from the hole, and at different angles to the hole. Then invest the proper time to read the putt, and stroke it (like I needed it to win a match), ... This also has me traveling to different golf clubs in the area for increasing the variety of slopes, speeds, grain, grasses, etc. All of which have an impact on the read. THANKS Geoff for making things a little simpler.
