Don't Understand Goydos 59 hype

Reidman

Recommended Posts

I realize its only happend 4 times on Tour....but
Am I the only one wondering about the hype of Goydos' 59 yesterday? Its really a (-12), which translates to a 60 on a par 72 course. And you don't see anyone on the PGA Tour writing 60 on their ball, and taking pictures....since its been done many times.

I'll have to research Duval's 59...but would bet par was 72 that day....which makes a (-13). Fairly certain Annika's was on a Par 72 course also.

What you guys think.....am I in the minority?

You are in the minority. You still have to hit the shots and you still have to putt the ball. A 59 is a 59, no matter how it's done. To use the baseball analagy...a couple of weeks ago, there was a no-hitter. The guy threw 149 pitches, had 7 walks and hit a batter, but didn't allow a hit. So is it really a no-hitter?

I would say minority. Sorry my man. 59 is 59 is 59.

Under your premise...if it was that easy on a par 71 or 70 there would be many more than there are in history.

Also, just throwing it out there, if you shot 59 on the PGA Tour under those tournament playing conditions, don't you think that you would be a little hyped about it??? I am not sure all the stuff he did...but I would be fired up.

Cut the guy some slack and give credit where credit is due. He shot 59. Amazing round of golf.

Another great fact about Goydos's 59 is he did it without an eagle. Nothing but 12 birdies no hole in one or holed out shot for a flukey eagle. That just makes it more impresive in my eyes.

Preferred lies on a par 71 - will always have an asterisk in my book although 59 is 59 and a great accomplishment.

Not to mention Stricker shooting a 60 on the same day.

@old SCHOOL texan,

Obviously -13 is better than -12, we all learned that in 1st grade, but 59's are soo hard to come buy, this course was a par 71, but even when tourneys are at par 70's no one still shoots a 59.

I agree playing it up puts more of a asterisk on it, but even that is spliting hairs. It was still an amazing accomplishment, especially vs. Annika's. I like watching the LPGA, but let's face it, they set those courses up for them to go low, makes for a better show. They hit 8i - PW into probably 80% of the par4's on average and the greens are nothing like the speed they are on the mens tour. The Womens U.S. Open being the exception of course...

Why would a 59 at a par 72 beat a 59 at a par 71? At a 72 you have 4 legit chances for eagle on a 71 you have 3. In my book they are the same. A 59 on tour is awesome no matter where. It's only happened 4 times in PGA tour history. It deserves the pub it's gotten.

TPC Deere Run is 7213 yards and they can call it Par 68 if they want. The man took 59 strokes to complete 18 holes and that is just plain AWESOME!!

I don't know th numbers but has there ever been a 59 on a par 70 track?
How many of the existing ones were on a Par 71 course?

IMHO it's more difficult to shoot 59 once the par goes down, as some have already pointed out.
Of course it always depends on the course layout and setup. I'd venture a guess that most tour setups only differ slightly in length whether they are Par 70 or 72, which makes the job of shooting 59 on any track just about the same difficulty level.
However from a mental standpoint I would think it more dificult to shoot a birdie on a long Par 4 than eagle on a medium length Par 5.

Playing the ball up surely made it easier for Goydos, but easier is a relative term, therefore easier by far doesn't mean easy.

Don't follow your logic...... what does Par have to do with a score of 59. Maybe next year they will decide to make TPC Deere Run a Par 70. Still the same course. Maybe we should be comparing all scores to a course difficulty rating and or slope rating to determine if a golfers score measures up. At the end of the day each competitor tees it up and low score wins, sure Par is a nice reference point but no more so than difficulty rating or slope which are supposedly a more accurate determination of a course rating than Par.

Beck and Duval on desert golf courses.

You still have to hit the fairway to lift, clean, and place.
That course is in such good condition, the lift, clean, and place wasn't much advantage.

If it was that easy, why didn't ten other guys shoot 59 that day? Stricker was awesome, too.

If it was par 72, he might have shot 58.

Congratulations PG!!

OldSkool, you and I would be great friends if we lived near each other! BUT we would have a few disagreements and this would be one of them. I have always shot better on a 72 layout than a 71 layout, his 59 stands and was super just as Strickers 60 was beyond belief! And I KNOW you don't have golf shoes older than me, I think I was here when the first load of dirt was hauled in for planet earth!! :friends::cheesy:

First of all, they play LCP more often than we know, or they should for that matter. When Rose went low at Muirfield nobody called BS. Second, he made some bomb putts, not every bird was a kick in. His improved lie may have helped some, but some good players put up high numbers. No asterisk, great round!

First off, shooting a 59 playing in a PGA Tour event on a tour setup is a tremendous accomplishment.

Secondly, you could make the argument that a par 71 or 70 is tougher because there are less par 5's
to make birdie or eagle on. Usually, they take par fives and make them long par fours, so mentally it
makes it a bit tougher to make birdie on those holes. That said, a 59 playing at that level is definitely
something special IMO.
I was going to make this point too. 1 less eagle opportunity is gone.

59 on a par 70 golf course is the same as 59 on a par 71 golf course and the same as 59 on a per 72 golf course because they are exactly the same number of strokes taken. Par is an arbitrary goal that the USGA/PGA/LPGA set for each hole based on what they think the players should be able to make. They could make it par 80 and if you only take 59 shots it's exactly the same score on that course if they made par 65.

That's why I laugh when there is a contest for one of the majors asking what the winning score will be and someone posts their 72 hole scores of -15 9or higher) without researching whether par is 280, 284 or 288. Makes a big difference in how many under but not in the final total for 72 holes. 273 can be -7, -11 or -15 but it's still 273.

I don't understand the hangup with it being a par 71. That number is relative. They are constantly taking par fives and making them par fours, still the same hole, if you card a three the only thing that changes is the semantics. A three is still a three, no matter if that three is a par, birdie or eagle.

As someone else said earlier, he took 59 strokes to get around the course. Thats the bottom line. Heres a thought, lets pretend we didn't know what par was for the course and we just knew it was a 7000yd +, PGA tour layout, in a tournament and someone shot 59. Would there still need to be an asterik or would everyone just be saying "great round"?
