a SuperTri set-up that really works...

I have liked this driver.. tested it against most all the current gamers.. PING, Cobra, Titleist, Callaway, Cleveland.. and the endless wave of Taylor drivers (have not hit the Deep)... I have tried and sure have a lot of experience dialing in the weights and hosel adjustment with Taylor Clubs and had a hunch with this driver.. took off a little length and then went to 45".

To maintain similar swingweight to the original design I added 4 grams of weight to the head. Have been told that generally most tour pros find close to stock settings with TM drivers works best given the designers for these guys are really rocket scientists these days and tend to configure their clubs for optimum performance for the vast majority of better players..

So anyway, have the hosel set to NU and I have 18 grams in the back and 2 and 2 in the heal and toe and this driver has improved for me dramatically...

I hit every fairway today (my driving has been good recently but 2-4 times a round I tend to really hit a poor to really poor shot off the tee that ultimately costs me 2-3 strokes or puts added pressure on my short game).. The heavier weight helped my tempo a lot and I was 10-15 yards beyond where I have been the last 3 weeks with this club.. there is a lot of talk about optimum shaft length and what is best for most players.. as a 58 year old low single digit players with LPGA distance this set-up took a bunch of pressure off my game today and I matched my best performance of the year with a nice little 2 under 70... every fairway helps and the extra weight moved to the perimeter of this head really stabilized it ..for me... maybe some food for thought as you dial yours in.

Hey Buster,

Wouldn't 18 grams in the back really up the launch angle?? I ask only because I have the SD, SF and the Super Tri and I have to say the Supertri has been the go to for me...with the SD a close second but still not dialed in. Still loving the Nickent Evolver but the Supertri and Superdeep had me intrigued...

I am playing a 8.5* Supertri with a Motore Speeder 8.1 at 44.75"

I normally hit a very high ball (116 swing speed) so still looking for the ideal numbers. Right now I am playing a 8 in the heel, 4 in the back and 1 in the toe with shaft inserted at NU and I get either a baby fade or dead straight (weirdly enough it is a strange ball flight to see a ball more or less go straight).

However, I hit the ball wayyyy up there...not really a problem until I am hitting in some type of cross wind then hard to control how much the wind affects it (and no I am not nearly good enough to hit draws/fades on command depending upon the wind).

At any rate just curious the ball flight you are getting with your set up...

you and I are on different ends of the spectrum here and I have buddies really putting weight upfront who have tour plus ss (avg in tour is 112 right?).. launch for me is perfect... but I'm 102-103 max ss... whole different deal..

I am adding 2 grams the stock set-up in the back and doubling the amount of weight upfront...16 to 18 and 1 to 2

The stock length of these clubs is hilarious to me. I would bet 97% of golfers would hit more consistent drives with a 45" or shorters shaft.

I remain very pleased with this concept of distance through optimization.. I have played with some very fine players who, having been fit by their equipment companies, find themselves tinkering with the wrench on the course... including a couple of OEM execs... and they get their stuff fit to their exact specs .. taylor's adjustable technology is really supper.. some smart guys there..
I think this tendency to longer and longer shafts is really counter productive... it makes the club harder to hit... period... end of story... I have played my drivers from 43 1/2 to to 46 1/2 over the past 10 years and am very sure that I have never gotten better ballflight and distance from any set-up than I am getting now... and I'm 58 ... have certainly slowed down a little... especially right around 50 for me when I went from 108-9 to 103 almost overnight... have been somewhat stable the last couple of years but have worked hard at it...

.. a former playing pro who now coaches some tour guys has stated on a couple of forums lately that the math is very obvious: good contact is good for a lot more distance than an addition inch .. think the better contact gets you 15 and the inch 3...someone will know...

Thanks for the input! I have my superdeep in the NU setting with 12 in the heel and 4 in the toe and I have never been happier! I have driven two 320+ par 4s and I am easily going for par 5s in two. I came from the FT Tour and even on my best hits I wasn't anywhere near the places I have been the last 4 weeks.

I have my ST set at 8-1-8 and also tried 8-6-8, it still launches mid to high but ball flight is very flat. Both shafts that I use contribute to that as well, but more weight closer to the face, ie. in the heel and toe, definitely helps to keep spin down. I really think TM did a good job with this one.

  • 11 months later...

I use currently 1-16-1 and fancy a change. I think I will go for a heavier head weight to help my tempo.

I have two 8 gram weights.. Tryed 8-1-8 and hated the feel. The 16 in the back feels way better!

What would 8-16-1 do for me? Or 8-8-1? 8-16-8 I am sure would be too heavy to try.

Hoping to get out to the course in the next few days but was curious on your thoughts.

Thanks

I say try the heavy set up. I play my supertri at 44.25 with the Motore 85 and I have it set to n with 10-16-10. It feels so solid and the flight is mid and boring.

I have my 9.5 set w/ 10 heel, 1 back, 8 toe. TP setting ( 1* open?) 45" . Maybe I should put a heavier weight in the back?
Works pretty well for me w/ my +/- 95mph SS. Plaing it w/ and Oban Devotion 6/4. Can work the bal w/ this set up, but is slightly draw biased, at least to my eye.
I was supplanted by the Titleist 910 D3, though.
