they look like the PERFECT blend between players and game-improvement. we'll see.

I've got these in the bag. I've always liked the idea of undercut irons, but the soles are always too wide. With these the soles have a fantastic grind that make the play like a true players iron through the turf. minimal offset too.

Man, I cannot wait for these irons ! Those of you who have hit them or already have a set-which shafts do you have in them ?

thanks
[/quote]

+1 I'd also like to know what shafts you guys are playing in them and any shafts you may have tried. Thanks.

I'm 99% sure I'll be putting lightweight shafts in mine, most likely the Nippons but maybe the GS 95s if I can hit some outside before making a decision.

I've played the Nippons so I know what I'm getting, but the GS 95s may be even better....to my liking, at least. What limited things I've heard about them intrigue me....traditional swingweighting, feel, stability, etc.

I hit a couple of the irons the mizuno rep. had while he was showing them to the store's buyer. I haven't been that impressed over the last few years with Mizuno's offerings. Kind of the same old same old or the game improvement stuff had way too wide a sole for my tastes. These seem to be a very impressive design with some GI and blade look at address. To my surprise I liked them better than the MP-63s he also had with him. This may be the best feeling undercut forged iron since the old Callaway X Tours. The difference is the feel and forgiveness are there but a traditional look as well (which the Callaways didn't have).

Those are very nice looking irons, I will certainly give them a try and see if they can oust the AP2's out of the bag. Hopefully the pitching wedge will not be as huge as some of the previous irons from Mizuno

Mizuno hasn't had the high heeled shoveled pitching wedges since before the MP-32.

I can't wait to try both of the new MP series irons, I still love the look of the 62s.

I've just hit the MP53s and the MP63s today - both with my preferred Nippon NS Pro 950GH in R flex that's in my custom MP57s.

Verdict.....overall very nice.

However, not drastically different to previous offerings.

MP53s:
Relatively indistinguishable from the MP52s, but both certainly better than the MP58s as I'd always felt the 58s felt funny with that tungsten plug. If you already have 52s, I don't think its worth trading in. But if you are NOT using 57s or 52s and want the new 53s, then get them - they hit lovely - soft, Miz feel, and ball flight is high - as high as the 58s.

MP63s:
Slightly more forgiving than the 68s, but not as 'feelsome' as the 62s. If you are using the 68s or older 67s and are due an upgrade, don't jump to the 63s straight away without trying the 62s. I would say ballflight is same as 68s, and a smidgen lower than the 62s. Personally I think I will take the 62s over the new 63s.

Above are my personal opinions after trying all iterations offered since the MP57s. I still love my 57s. Probably a watershed iron, the best and last of the cut muscle cavity model.

PS: There is a new grind to the trailing edge/rear edge of each iron, sort of like the 'C' grind found in modern wedges like the Pings and Miz and Cally and Vokeys. The grind on the 53s is more pronounced than the 63s. Not sure what this grind does for normal fairway shots but I was hitting the 53s quite well - not a lot of divot, almost like G10s or G15s pinching the ball off the turf - but I don't usually take much divot on my irons anyway.

Eventempo,

Thank you for taking the time to post the above. Quick question, I was about to pull the trigger on a set of 57s when I learned about the release of the 53s. So, I held off. Since you seem to have quite a bit of experience with the 57s, would you mind providing some additional thoughts on how the two irons compare, i.e. ball flight, forgiveness, etc.? Thank you.

Comparing the 57s and the new 53s - assuming the same shaft and flex:
For sure the 53s are more forgiving - how much more depends on your ball striking - if you flush the ball all the time, then you will get enjoyment out of both. I would say the new 53 is a little more 'solid' having the newer tech and design.

The new 53 goes a little higher than the 57 - not much but a little; one thing I didn't say above was that it was noticeably easier to hit straight on any normal swing - ie not trying to kill the ball - think LPGA swing; the new 53 does not go as high as the 58 which I think is the highest of the lot due to the tungsten plug.

So forgiveness wise, I would rate - in decending order from most to least from a pure feel perspective: new 53s, a smidgen ahead of 58s, which is pretty much on par with the 52s, then the 57; you will notice this for sure in 3,4, & 5 irons.

Ball flight (assuming same shaft and flex) - from highest to lowest:
58s, and a smidgen lower the new 53s, with the 52s and 57s about the same.

53s probably easier to hit straight out of the lot.

Length: I hit them all pretty much the same distance using the crappy 1 piece range balls so difficult to tell. I'm not a fast swinger (6 iron 84mph) so ball distance is something I'm not blessed with enough to test.

jshanks, I would say if you haven't already got the 57s then the 53s are worth the dosh - more tech, newer design et al. But if price was an issue then take the 57s especially/particularly if you flush the ball each time.

Lastly, do hit them before deciding - one man's experience is only a guide!! Lol!

One thing - I don't know what swing weight the test 53s and 63s came in but they felt a little more than my own D1.5 57s. They felt like D2 or thereabouts. The 63 was noticeably heavier - prob D3.

PS: Would I trade in my 57s for 53s if I needed to replace them? Yes. Would I trade in the 57s just because the 53s are out, no. Not that I'm a great ball striker - far from it. I just can't justify the expense if my 57s are still in great nick and have years of life left in them. Remember the more you stick with an iron the more consistent your iron play!
