Aaron Baddeley picks up 30-50 yards?

Recommended Posts

I think it was Billy Kratzert who said on Live at the PGA, that Aaron Baddeley said he had picked up 50 yards of distance since going back to his old instructor and abandoning the Stack and Tilt. He said that might have been stretching it a bit. Earlier in the broadcast a 30 yard increase was mentioned. Either way that seems significant if it is true. To my eye Aaron seems to stay centered and rotary and retain much of what he was doing with the S&T. What do you see that has changed to add that much distance to his swing?

I believe that he might have picked up a few with the driver. But not 50 or even 30. Maybe 10.

SnT is not designed to maximize distance. I think it is designed to give you the most consistent results, keeping distance as an important factor.

I would doubt he has picked up any yards with any other club besides the driver.

He is hitting it straighter now and landing on sprinkler heads

Non-professional opinions from me:

1. I think it is possible that an accomplished golfer (like a touring pro) could lose some distance with S & T or gain some distance when leaving S & T behind. The S & T swing uses fewer moving parts which is potentially good for consistency and accuracy, but fewer parts means fewer muscles delivering power to the swing.

2. I, on the other hand, being a less than accomplished golfer (very unlike a touring pro) picked up some additional distance with an S & T swing, most likely because I am hitting the sweet spot more consistently and because I can put more ooomph into my swing without worrying that it will cause me to sway and dip and all that ugly stuff.

When Charlie Wie (an S & T poster child) was in contention a few weeks ago, I noticed that he was consistently shorter off the tee than his fellow competitor on the final round. But he was consistently in the fairway. I thought, well if you can live with that as a pro, that is great. If not, well, study the swing of Philly Mick or even John Everyman Daly. But me, as a non-pro, I am kinda liking what S & T is doing for me.

But your results may vary. Here's to diversity::drinks:

I lost about 20-25 yards per club when I was S&T
If that is true, then you were not utilizing all the elements of S&T correctly.

There really shouldn't be any significant distance loss (carry) with any club
with the Stack and Tilt swing. You should experience better distance control
because of the consistency of solid contact & precisely controlling your low
point. A lot of the people I have spoken with that have gone to S&T are not
understanding it properly and not performing the fundamentals correctly.

Badds is #8 on PGA Tour in club head speed ... 8th!

He averages just 3 mph less than Bubba Watson, and puts Mickelson in his rear view mirror.

Really surprised me to see that.

Don't care much about club head speed, all I deal with is results. Bubba is #2, and Phil Michelson is #10... Badds is ranked #13 in driving distance this week, was #14 last week. Badd's is behind both as I read the PGA results.

Is the 30 to 50 yards gained in the right direction? No use if it's 30 yards further right.

His last six years driving distance stats. Could it be he's picked up an
extra 10 yards because of a better driver head, shaft, ball combo???
Seems like he's always been around a 290 average and now he's
around the 299 mark this year.

2010 -- 299.4
2009 -- 287.5
2008 -- 290.3
2007 -- 291.9
2006 -- 288.3
2005 -- 291.4

So you following him for "a little bit" during a single weekend makes you the authority on his swing? lol
Maybe not, just comparing him to the better ball strikers that same weekend he was not hitting it good enough to win. Then you combine that with the plunge down the stats to back up what I saw.

You have a point but he had a loooooooong ways go in my eyes.

Just a general question, Didn't Badds win a tournament (maybe 2) when he was with P&B?
Yes he did, and was paired in the final group of a US Open on Sunday before shooting 80.

Since leaving P&B he has seen a precipitous fall in world rank and overall, except for driving distance, his ball striking has declined.

I wish him well, but all he did in leaving P&B was give the talking heads like Kostis validation for their outdated, incorrect information. He could have been part of something special....namely a change in the way the golf swing is perceived, but instead chose to flounder in mediocrity just to get said talking heads off his back.

I don't use S&T, but I am a fan of the way they want to put traditional instruction on it's ear.

So being curious and a huge nerd I whipped up the numbers from the PGA website. A few observations:

Badds has never, ever been a good ballstriker, despite half of the people on this forum having huge raging equipment boners for the tiny forged blades in his WITB. He has never cracked the top 150 in GIR. Not exactly a poster child for S&T.
He did happen to win twice on the PGA using S&T, in 2006 and 2007 (Verizon Heritage and the FBR).
He has gained distance in 2010. Before 2010 he was about average length by Tour standards but now he is ranked 14.
His real strength is and always has been his putter. He is INSANELY good on the greens, converting the birdies.
Consider that when hitting the green in regulation, despite being ranked 183rd in proximity to the hole (averaging 38' 1"), he is ranked 4th in putts per GIR at 1.738. That is astonishingly good putting.
Aaron's one of my favorite players on tour, so I'm not knocking him at all - but it begs the question, maybe, just maybe, he should at least try a cavity back? There are plenty of better ballstrikers on the PGA playing more forgiving clubs than he plays. If he could be average in GIR, like top 75, and keep putting like he does, he would be a real force.

Numbers speak for themselves. In the words of Bubba Watson..."your welcome!" (He's a golfer, not a speller).

PS - story about how awesome Aaron is - I played in a children's charity event a year ago where one of the auction items was a round with Badds at Whisper Rock. Two bidders far wealthier than I got in a contest, and the price got up to several thousands. Aaron's rep was there, so he called up Aaron on his cell phone and asked if he could do two rounds, one with each guy, and Aaron of course said "No problem at all!" Great guy.

I'm glad someone with some knowledge contributed. s&t is a joke.

EDIT: Checked the top 5 in GIR: Matteson, Sutherland, Trahan, Senden, and Druant. s&t golfers?

Charlie Wi is 99 and Axley is not a tour member anymore.

Stats ehhhhh

Matteson - S&T - nr 1. 70.51% = 12.87 greens in regulation per round
Wi - S&T - nr 99. 66.59% = 11.99 greens in regulation per round

Yeah, Wi really sucks ....
