Cool Weather Apparel

Hey all,

Sadly enough, fall is approach so I wondering what everyone's recommendations were for warm apparel in cool weather. Stuff that is comfortable for you to wear golfing when it's 5 to 10 degrees celcius out (I'm thinking that's around 50 degrees farenheit?). I don't like to wear a whole bunch of clothes - particularly baggy clothes - when golfing but hate it when I'm cold.

Any suggestions?

I live in Montreal - playing in the cold weather is common place. Under armour cold gear long sleeve top, any type of thermal under wear, a heavy polo shirt, khakis, thermal socks, gore-tex jacket (sunice hurricane), tuque (hat), mittens (between shots) and that's it. I will use this set up when 'winter golf' starts - temperatures 1C (32F) up to 5C. It helps to carry your bag....Hope this helps :-)

I think I take a different route than most here. I don't care for base layers like underarmour, Patagonia, etc. for golf unless it's [i]really [/i]cold.
I prefer a regular polo with a sweater. Something light but warm, like lambswool or cashmere. Not only do I think it's more comfortable and stylish, but I can easily take it off it I get warm.

Mizuno Breath Thermo is fantastic.

There is some new performance fleece from Nike Golf that has Dri-Fit stretch sections to provide motion and heat release in certain regions. I like that type of garment.

A nice wool sweater as mentioned is always good, the Original Performance fabric.

yeah, i live in canada too and its about that time of year again. i wear an adidas lycra pullover thats awesome. its really thin and light but it keeps my body warm. if its colder than that i have a footjoy dryjoys jacket thats really good but those things are expensive, mine was 300 bucks eight years ago, im still wearing it though.

Under Armour Coldgear, definitely. If it gets any colder I'll put a cashmere sweater on as well.

A beanie would be helpful too

Like many, I really like the Under Armour Cool Gear mocks. I also tend to wear Gavin Green insula sweaters. They are very lightweight but very warm. Merino sweaters also do the trick. These combined with a good set of waterproods and warm socks and I'm set for winter.

In the prairies in Canada and sadly, it's not too early to be chatting about winter clothes. September is usually okay but by the time October hits, it's usually not much warmer than 10 degrees celcius.

I have a couple Under Armour coldgear compression mocks and I find they aren't too bad as a first layer...but usually need more clothes on the real cool days.

When it gets below 50*:


Thermal underwear--wool blend are best. Then your normal pants.

Some sort of compression shirt, w/ a thin wool sweater over that, then depending on how cold a microfleece long sleeve or lined wind/rain long sleeve shirt or thick wool sweater.

Don't forget your feet. Some sort of polyester/wicking sock and a pair of wool socks over that depending on how cold it is.

And a nice stocking cap.

I like to use as few layers on my chest as possible, too restrictive on the swing. Usually wear a polypro, insulated, long sleeve top and my windproof, full zip footjoy jacket. That way you can use the zipper to stay slightly cool and not sweat. Windproof is the key here!

I usually wear insulated polypro long johns too, under some tightly knit, windproof pants, a hat keeps the head and ears warm and winter is the only time I wear gloves to golf. Usually wear tennis shoes and walk if it is cold.

When it cools off I switch from Adidas to Mizuno. Breath-Thermo mocks and a WindLite sweater vest or full sweater. These are the only two layers I need (unless it is raining) and I have played when it has been in the 40's.

Trust me… those are the right names, and you'll be very toasty, well protected from the wind, and be able to swing unimpeded. I have a closet full of the stuff.

Mizuno Windlite is the name for it also...just get the sweater...not the jacket. Those things are awesome!

They 'are' sweaters. They just have a very thin windproof lining.

Another Canadian here. +1 for the Under Armour compression shirts. I also wear vests a lot, either fleece or nylon. They keep your body warm but don't hinder your swing.

What's a good rain proof jacket that can be worn when the weather is cool? Want something that blocks the wind and can be used for fall / spring golf even when it's not raining.

I have a pair of Sun Mountain Rainflex pants which I like, just need to find a jacket now.
