Matt Kuchar Swing Sequence, Golf Digest October 2010

--- target line & up-line sequences can be seen here: http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-instruction/swing-sequences/2010-10/photos-matt-kuchar?#slide=1

...according to his teacher, Chris O'Connell. "When I first met Matt, he would aim left of his target, turn his shoulders flat in the backswing, and then thrust his hips toward the target line," O'Connell says. "This inside-to-outside path, coupled with his aim, required him to block the ball toward the target. He also had a very shallow angle of attack and excessive clubface rotation through impact. He was way too reliant on timing, and he couldn't produce enough spin on middle- and long-iron shots."

So they went to work on Kuchar's alignment (more to the right), backswing (steeper shoulder turn) and downswing (aggressive body turn through the ball). The final pieces are changing his hip thrust into a hip rotation and getting his hands and arms to stay closer to his body, so the clubface will be more stabilized during impact. If that sounds like a lot, it is, but it's starting to pay off. -- Ron Kaspriske

He is swinging less out at the ball this year than last. This isn't "great", but it's a lot better.
His left arm is SOOOOO far inside the baseline at p3.5 and p5.5, that he can't help but cf it, and roll all hell out of #3 to spit the sweetspot out to the ball....he AIN'T the perfect Hardy model...though he's a work in progress....

How 'bout you say all of that in plain old English for those of us who are very interested in your observations but are not familiar with the terms used above??

Here is a good link for S&T terms
S&T References

Baseline is basically the stance line, CF is a draw procedure making the path out the right, #3 Accumulator is referring to the lead arm, P3 is when the lead arm is parallel to the ground.
So, in other words, when Kuchar is halfway into the back swing his hands are so far inside his stance line that by the time he comes back to impact he has to roll his left forearm to get the clubface back on the ball throwing the path out the right.
If I'm off, siteseer or Nick, please correct me

Thanks for posting that Chris...hadn't seen it before. I shot THE video he's using of Matt in this clip, so it's interesting to hear Chris' interpretation of what's happening.

Nick- I'm curious what your thoughts are on lead foot knee problems with S&T and one plane. I've worked with one of Hardy's guys for a few years now and we always seem to be working on getting me more forward on the downswing. I tend to be a back foot spinner as we call it, causing either wipey cuts or blocks/hooks depending on the path. I've had knee surgery on my left knee (i'm right handed) and i'm wondering if you have had any other problems with guys with weak or bad knees. Thanks.

Do you know for a fact that he receives compensation from any of those sources? If so, please list specifically what he receives from each one? I highly doubt that you do.but your attitude is typical of some (not all) S&T followers on this board. You're an expert on Tiger and Foley and Kuchar and whoever else and you're ready to fire your cannons of criticism, but then you complain about people unfairly criticizing S&T. It's fine if you don't like a person or a theory, but no need to throw out false accusations. I think we would all be better off (including myself) if we used a little thought in our posts.

Edit: I changed the tone of my post as it was not helpful. I stand by what I said.

Chris (Kuchar's swing coach) was Jacobson's caddy for a while way back when. Now he works with Kuchar and helps with Jacobson too. So why wouldn't he have good things to say about him? He has first hand knowledge on what Kuch is/has been working on. It's not like any of Jacobson would get a cut from any of Chris's new students or any of Hardy's seminars.

most consistent player on any tour, hey, let's redo his swing.tease.gif

too bad golf swings dont butter the bread, getting it in the hole does. his swing looks goofy, but he repeats it every time. good for him. and just one more example of how many ways you can swing a club, and how many positions you can put the body in, and as long as the club is used correctly you'll hit great shots.
