Played most of the top-rated privates including TCC in "Open" config, Boston Club, Salem, Myopia. All great experiences but just preferred Winchester and Essex. Have yet to play Olde Sandwich and from what I hear I expect that to make #1 - when I ever get to play it..

Olde Sandwich can give the TCC a run, but OS is still amazing. Two different courses however, TCC a little more narrow and can tell its an older setup.

Public: Crumpin Fox and The Ranch
Private: The International - The Pines Course and Renaissance Golf Club

I Play Crumpin at least twice a year and I look forward it. Such a great track and playing it in the fall is just an absolute treat.
The Ranch is a course that you want to play when you are swinging good, then you can test yourself on a high caliber course.

I was able to play the new Pines course at The International during a play your own ball best ball tourney and that course was totally sick.
The practice facility was absolutely awesome, all pro v1 range balls stacked in the pyramids, it was inexpressive.

But the Renaissance Golf Club really like you died and went to golf heaven.
I was able to use the practice facility there had everything a good player needed to practice, bunkers, practice greens and fairway target greens.
I really enjoyed my time out when I played there.

i haven't played much but Haverhill CC is my only private course I've ever played and my favorite public is Quail Ridge in Acton. It feels like Butter Brook, in Westford but cheaper in price.
[/quote]

I'm not sure if you've played Quail Ridge this year, but they sold the land that used be holes 8 and 9, put in a couple temporary greens to divide former holes 10 and 18 each into a short par 3 and a short par 4, and it's now a par 66 course. RIP Quail Ridge. Personally, I never cared for the course in the first place, but I do agree that Butter Brook is nice.

Any idea on what the best way into privates would be? Well, the best way for a low handicapper who's missed most of the deadlines for MGA events and with minimal discretionary income..

Not entirely new to the New England golf scene, but still not as established as I'd like to be. I grew up in Atlanta and was always able to get out on a nice private every once in a while (Atlanta Athletic, CC of the South, etc..). It'd be nice to have a treat to look forward to once in a blue moon..

Without a doubt, the best golf course I've ever played, which doesn't have an "ocean, lake or mountains for scenary", is the Golf Club of Cape Cod. 17 spectacular holes, 1 good hole (I don't think 17 is a great hole). The disclaimer is, a friend of mine was the original developer and I theoretically have a "free membership" there, although I've only played it once. If you ever have a chance to play it, give up your first born if necessary. It's a real gem.

Winchester - awesome
Worcester - great
Vespers - good
Charles River - good
New Seabury - excellent
The International [I'm a member, so my opinion is biased
Vineyard Club - nah
Concord C.C. - nah
Nashawtuc - wouldn't play for free
Marlboro - cow pasture
TPC Norton - average
C..C. of New Bedford - no thanks

If I had to pick ONE private club in MA to play above all others, it would be Myopia Hunt Club. Awesome golf course and the atmosphere is what golf should be about. Up until a few years ago, women weren't even allowed to walk through the clubhouse ... they had a separate "walk way", which was outside. OK, so I'm old school.

There is only one Farm Neck Golf Course !

TPC Boston, my former boss is a member. Played before and after the renovation. Really impressed with the facility

Tedesco CC, worked there right out of college. Old school classic N.E. course, not long but the greens will eat you up!

CC of New Bedford. Just a fun course in great shape. BrianL99 and I have agreed to disagree on this one LOL. Considering that place is $2800 yr to play where as most good semi privates are in that price range. Excellent value!!

International-The Oaks, conditions were excellent (thanks Brian!) Looking forward to when we play The Pines this year.

Public:

Disclaimer: While I look for the great conditioned courses I also love to play the fun courses even if they are cheap as hell to play.

#1 hidden gem is Twin Hills in Coventry CT. A family built/run course that is like $32 for 18 holes. You will not walk away overly impressed with the layout but the greens are in AWESOME FAST shape all the time. The greens are what sells the course. It's maybe 3 miles off Rt. 84 (exit 67). Its just one of those courses that you say "that was fun I'll be back!"

Gannon CC in Lynn, where I first played and same as Tedesco, old school classic N.E. course.
Butter Brook
Red Tail
Waverly Oaks
Acushnet River Valley
The Ledges in Maine
Highfields
Kettlebrook
Middleton Par 3 course, one of the best courses for trying new irons and getting the winter moths off!

On my hope to play list is Renissance GC, I have a golfing buddy who is a member and trying to arrange the round.

The Pines is the old course at IGC, although the fescue & some other things are new. Great practice facility, but we're a TaylorMade Performance Center, no Titleist on the range, unless Titleist is a named sponsor of an event.

I think New Seabury is one of the worst courses in the state. The greens are horrific (4-5 greens on the back are virtually dead and mud) and the back 9 looks like any average course in MA and has no ocean views. Golf Club of Cape Cod is a 1,000 times better as is Hyannisport. Other top notch would be Salem, Winchester, Belmont (unreal greens but layout is just average), TPC (greens are like cement this year).
