5.0 versus R300 - fitting details inside with Optimizer numbers

Earlier this evening I went to a Golf Digest top 100 fitter to try out their "retro iron fitting" service. Basically, they take a set or sets that you have and go through a comprehensive fitting (length, lie, grip size, and shaft) and make recommendations for what you should change to fit your swing and set up.

I currently play original AP2's with PX 5.0.

I'm mostly happy with the PX shaft but I do feel that from about the 7 iron down, I tend to launch a bit too high and can have trouble keeping the flight lower when I need to.

For my retro fitting we were looking at two older Hogan sets, Apex Redlines and Apex II's. Using the Mizuno shaft optimizer, I don't remember my exact numbers, but I think it was like: 78 swing speed - then 5 2 4 4.

Results were: Dynamic Gold XP R-300, PX 5.0, KBS Tour Regular.

The fitter was very surprised that it did not spit out DGSL R300 and he thought that either that shaft or the current PX 5.0 I'm hitting would be the 2 best fits. I did tell him that I liked the idea of a lighter weight shaft (I'm a pretty small dude) and that I probably do not need to hit it any higher than I already do. he said he didn't like either the DG XP or the KBS recommendation as they would probably go too high in my mid and short irons. Remember, these are old school lofts in the Hogans so naturally they should go a bit higher even with a higher center of gravity.

Sooooo...that being said, has anyone hit the DG SL's? Overall comparisons in feel and performance versus PX? Also, would I be sacrificing too much height in the 4-6 irons? I did hit about 20 balls with a MP68 head and R300 DG SL, it felt pretty smooth, maybe a bit smoother than PX. But this was indoors so I couldn't see ball flight.

Anyone? If I'm essentially happy with the PX 5.0 ball flight, will I see any real benefits from DG SL other than maybe slightly less fatigue and lower flight in the short irons? Will long iron launch and flight suffer noticeably?

Is there a noticeable feel difference, particularly if I went with Sensicore?

I've only tried dg sl in a two iron and I didn't think it was very consistent, I'd go with the px and maybe try a lighter grip if you want a lighter total weight

PX flighted are going to give him the difference in launch he's looking for, but are heavier than non-flighted PX. I'd try and get on a monitor to see actual spin numbers and launch angles. What you think might be too high, might not be.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have tried flighted before, I actually had PX flighted 5.5 in a set of Cally X-Forged about 4 years ago. Didn't get along with that club head but thought the shafts were pretty good.

I certainly don't feel as though I'm giving up any distance in my mid and short irons with the PX 5.0 and the high launch flat trajectory, just more wandering if I might get a better feel and benefit from the lighter weight of the DG SL. I agree very much with the last post in that what I think is high may not be robbing me of distance or playability at all.

What I may do is get a set of 5.0's for the set of refinished Redline heads that are ready to go, and then maybe just get the 6 iron in my older set reshafted with a DG SL R300 and compared the 2 six irons.

Also may go back to the store and see if I can get on the trackman and compare a blade head like an MP 68 with 5.0 versus the DG SL R300.
