Need advice from locals
Will be in Bend Sep 3-9 (staying at Brasada) then over to the coast Sep 10-12, probably Lincoln City.

On the hit list....Aspen on the way in from Portland, Brasada, Crosswater & Tetherow. Most likely Sandpines on the coast (have an axe to grind with this course, now that I'm a better golfer, last trip no good)

Need some suggestions on the coast...Ocean Dunes, Salishan? Would love some input from locals. Thanks.

Ocean Dunes is alright, but it's a short and tight track. If you are wayward off the tee, you won't have fun. Salishan is okay, not as good as Sandpines, but a few really good holes. There's actually a pretty nice 9 hole track in Waldport (Crestview Hills).

Golf options on the Central coast are pretty limited though, Sandpines and Salishan are the best bets. You could hit Tokatee or Emerald Valley on the way through.

Bandon Crossing is a fun course and not to be confused with Bandon Dunes; in Bandon of course. Personally I like Ocean Dunes better than Sandpines b/c its got a lot of personality, but as perviously posted its tight and it will homer you bad the first couple of times playing it. Also, if the wind is blowing it will really be tough. I agree about Salishan. I also agree about Gearhart Golf Links, I also believe it is the oldest course west of the Missisippi river. Not long, but it will work you, again, especially if the wind is blowing.

Bandon Crossings and Gearhart Links are on golfnow and usually have good greens fees under the "hot deals" header on their web site. I'm not sure if either of the courses in Florance are on golfnow. I'd check both golfnow and EZlinks for reduced greens fees.

Tetherow is one of my favorites, but it will kick your a**. If you have a chance Juniper in Redmond is a really good track. Emerald Valley or Shadow Hills are good at the south end of the Willamett valley. Mallard Creek in Lebonon is a really good track.

I'd suggest going on your computer and go to both golfnow and EZlinks and see what is available in regards to your time here.

Thanks for all the updates boys...keep them coming. Gearhardt might be a little out of the way.

Packing my bags...will be in Portland on Saturday. Here is how the schedule is panning out:

Saturday - arrive Portland, Voodoo donuts, drive to Bend
Sunday - Del Taco, hopefully Crosswater in the afternoon
Monday - Check into Brasada.....hiking...be with the wife day
Tuesday - Pronghorn Nicklaus
Wednesday - all day Rafting trip...be with the wife day
Thusday - Brasada, home in time to catch Packers/Saints
Friday - drive coastline, up to Lincoln City
Saturday - beach...be with wife day
Sunday - Salishan, unless wife chooses to work...then long day to have another crack at Sandpines
Monday - drive to Portland, Pine Street Biscuits, Reserve South, home to see MNF double header.

Can't wait. We hit 112 here in Austin this week...ready to be a little cooler. Any more ideas...let me know.

Some great golf in there, couple thoughts though:

Saturday: Make sure to have the Maple Bacon donut. Though I love the Oreo as well. Also, this is a long drive, bring extra donuts :)
Sunday: If Crosswater doesn't work out, play Tetherow, great, great course. Other options Aspen Lakes or Juniper.
Tuesday: Pronghorn is soft. Don't let the desert surroundings fool you, you can't run the ball up. Beautiful course though, just over watered.
Weds: Lower Deschutes is a blast.
Thurs: Don't walk Brasada, and there is a sports bar in Bend, downtown, but it's about 30 min drive (there are TVs there though, but sometimes you want that bar atmosphere).
Friday: This is like a 5+ hour drive, be prepared. Pretty though. Best option is make a day of it, stop at some waterfalls, lunch, etc.
Saturday: This is Oregon, we have coast, not beaches. It will be overcast, 60 and windy. Don't plan to lay on the beach, the ocean is frigid too, and green. Hitting shops in Lincoln City or Depoe Bay are good options. Also, have dinner or lunch at Tidal Raves. Make reservations ahead of time. (also good, Blackfish Cafe (LC), April's in Nye Beach (newport), and Sidedoor Cafe (Gleneden Beach). If you are foodies, Restaurant Beck (DB) or Bay House). Skip Kylos, it's overpriced and not great, though the view is nice. Wildflower Grill has great breakfast.

Have a great trip!

I will just add a couple of my suggestions based on my experiences:

I really like Tetherow, slightly overpriced, but it can be worth it if the conditions are right. If you can, check with some locals regarding the current condition of the course. The first time I played it was right after it allowed just a few public rounds a week. Even though it was growing in still, the course was firm and fun. One of my top 3 favorite golfing experiences ever. Played it again in early 2010 and the conditions were terrible, the forecaddie was too green (no help on anything except a few yardages), and the clubhouse restaurant took 45 minutes to prepare a 4some lunch at 11:30am. Just a terrible experience.

Brasada is my favorite course in that area, so 2 rounds there is great!

Pronghorn Nicklaus is fun, but really tight in some spots. Not a big deal unless you play in 20-30mph winds like last time I was there.....DOH!

I actually really like Juniper. Cheap relative to other courses around, but the layout is very fun and challenging. I'd actually play it over Pronghorn on a windy day because being a little offline doesn't kill you as badly. I've played it 5 times and can't wait to go back.

Aspen Lakes is solid on your way back.

As far as Gearhart goes, I actually would not recommend it. The online pictures of the course make it look awesome, but nearly all of the holes are right on top of each other (meaning lots of other people playing from your fairway) and short (I drove a few par 4's with a 3 wood from the tips). The back is a little better, but the front is a mess in my opinion.

Salishan though is a fun round. You can only see water from like 3 holes, but the layout is decent. I played it on a cool/foggy morning and it was a cool experience.

I'll chime in....

Must play courses in Central Oregon -

Tetherow
Brasada
Sunriver
Pronghorn
Juniper

Not a huge fan of Aspen Lakes......

On the coast ( besides Bandon) -
Salishan
Sand Pines

As someone mentioned, Tokatee is an awesome course as well.

PM me if you need any more info on Central Oregon courses, eats,etc........

cheers, spin

Just closing the door on this thread.

Saturday. Tried the bacon maple bar....not bad...but probably not one I'd order again. Really loved the Gay Bar and Orangutang.
Sunday. Aspen Pines. Shot 81...this course was tougher than expected. Decent shape...greens were spotty.
Monday. Grocery shopping & check-in to Brasada. This resort was really nice. Laid-back, great staff, great golf & practice facilities.
Tuesday. Juniper..biggest surprise of the trip. Great little course with a linksy feel. Superb condition. 82, but putted like crap. Greens were undulating and lightning fast.
Wednesday. Whitewater on Upper Deschutes. Had trouble finding any place to take us after Labor Day. Class 3+ rapids with low water levels...what a blast.
Thursday. Brasada, shot 80. Can't say enough about this course. Superb conditions...even better layout. Really fun holes. Must play for anyone in Bend area.
Friday. Drive from Bend to Lincoln City. Voodoo donuts again in Eugene.
Saturday. Shopping in LC, flew kite on the coast. Chilly...but that was to be expected.
Sunday. Tidal Raves definitely the culinary highlight of the week. Top notch seafood with top notch view from table. Spinach bisque and seafood platter. Man, salivating just thinking about it. Great suggestion!!!
Monday. 75 at The Reserve (South). Good course in excellent shape. Little short, but fun to play.

Thanks again for all the input. You guys are what makes this website great.

Nice score at the Reserve South in Hillsboro,OR. That course used to hold the seniors 5th major of the year(Jeld Wen and Fred Myer Classic). Peter Jacobsen was the man! It was a great course when I lived there(1995-2005) as was Aspen Lakes. I hope you had a chance to sample a Black Butte Porter from Desuchutes Brewing Company in Bend,OR. Best Beer I've ever had! Go Ducks and Go Beavs!

Glad you had a good trip, you saw a lot of Oregon and some great courses in a short time. Too bad you didn't get to Sandpines (or Bandon) but hey, you have a reason to come back. The gay bar is the best, but it's a little awkward to recommend to someone ;)

Tidal Raves is great, we go back every time we hit the coast :)

As the previous poster mentioned, I hope you took advantage of the local beers, best collection of beers in the country.
