Handicap is around 14
Hey there so i have had this decision running around in my head seemingly for 6 years now...to buy mp 33s or not? I love the way they look, and I am a pretty decent ball striker. I currently play an adams idea pro hybrid/forged combo set, and hit them really well. I am a 14 handicap or so, but my problem is i can t chip/putt very well. What would you guys do? Sell the idea pros and get your dream set or sit on what you've been gaming well for 2 years? I found a good looking set this weekend at golf galaxy for 157...not a bad price i think.

For 157 you cant go wrong with a good set of MP33's. I have a set and every now and then I put them back in play and plan to rebuild them over the winter with a set of c-tapers. Also, you will never know what could have been, unless you go out and get them. For $157, it is probably worth it and you can resell them on here for about that anyway if it doesnt work out.

I'm a firm believer in that you have to play whatever appeals to your eye (blades are not just for low handicappers). If you like the looks of the MP-33's then go for it. Price wise $157 isn't too bad since their current value is about $140.

For $157, you've got to get the 33's even if you're a 100 capper. That's a really good price. I agree with others here about blades. They are NOT just for low cappers no matter what you may hear. It all depends on what you want. It's a big mental thing. I'm an 18-20 capper and I own 2 sets of blades and a set of player's cavity backs. I hit my blades just as good as I hit anything else. Now, I do give up a little distance with my blades, but that can be mostly attributed to the much weaker lofts.

I still have my set of 33's and they are an awesome set of irons.. I learned to play with hogan apexs and can say blades or MB's aren't just for low handicaps. Will you be knocking down flag sticks your first round .... Probably not.. But over time they will force you to become a consistent "ball striker"... I use that term loosely, as I got stuck at the 10-12 hdcp range for a while and thought i was a pretty good "ball striker"... Turns out as I hit more and more shots (okay a lot more) I was starting to get 10 ft birdie putts not 20.. I only say that because I played just yesterday and shot a 77, par 72 and felt like I gave away at least five in just chipping and putting. If you really want to improve pick them up, you won't regret it! Except your first miss thin and off the toe! But it's like shock therapy that way!

No offense but if you were a good ball striker you wouldn't have to worry about your chipping and putting so much. A 14 handicap suggests that you miss a lot of greens and when you do land on a green it isn't close to the hole. Whilst a well struck forged blade feels great the mishits don't and whatever your mishits are now they'll be worse with a blade.

IMO contrary to what people say, using blades will not make you a better ball striker, you can feel how well you've hit the ball with any club. Blades just magnify the feeling. I use Ping S56's and play to about a 4-5 index. Practice is what makes you better. I could say that I believe I should be 5 strokes better every round because of chipping and putting, but if my ball striking was more consistent I wouldn't have to contend with difficult outs and chips.

The MP33´s are maybe the most beautiful iron ever, I recently bought a set as well. You should get your dream set, can´t go wrong for $157, just don´t sell your current gamer until you play well with the 33´s, you might regret it.

I'd like to hear more about this (maybe in a different thread). At a 35+, what kind of reference do you have to "like blades" over something else? Do you consistently score worse with non-blades? I don't think I understand this statement at all.

I was wondering if that statement would get tagged. I was happy to see the balls it takes to even make that statement. I believe his reference was he likes the way blades look, not how they help or hurt his game. I'm a 15 capper and love MB or Blades but if I were player those irons, guys would probably say, "you know, a set of Burners may get you into the 80s". LOL

I just don't get it, and would like to hear the rationale, even if the rationale is purely emotional (and not rational). But he hasn't responded to the question on either of a couple different threads...

I didn't see it, I started out with a set of Nike Slingshots, I hated them with a passion, I bought MP-14's and after a day, started hitting irons better, and after that, started hitting woods better, blades rock, and I'm honest with my HC which isn't even established, I've been playing for less than 6 months, but I wouldn't go back to SGI ever.

So if you intention was to make me question my irons.. You failed to do so, I like them alot, which has nothing to do with what others thing and all to do with what I think.I have MP-68's now. Fantastic iron btw.

Your handicap is irrelevant when looking for your dream set. What is relevant is if you can hit them. Usually a low handicapper is a great ball striker which makes it easier to hit blades. Don't stop from getting them if you love them and you have that great price but remember that they are going to be much less forgiving and that mid handicap could actually be higher if the less forgiving irons can't even get you to where you say you struggle. I would get the irons personally because its a good buy but don't put those Adams away!

I bought 32's this last year. Have always wanted them, and I got them for around 200 with shafts I wanted to try. Adjustment period? Yup. But I also find that my misses lose distance as opposed to direction. Instead of being 10 yards right of target and in the lake, I find myself 10yards short and 5 yards right. I prefer the loss of distance. I grew up on blades so going back to them almost makes me feel like a kid again. At the price you listed you owe it to yourself to try them, if you don't like them you'll break better than even.

It's all good, I can hit the blades, I'm a high handicapper because I'm always hitting something OB. (and I actually count it)

If you like the way they feel and look that's fine and have every right to game them in that respect. No offense but saying that you're a good ball striker after only having 6 months under your belt is very hard to believe.

"Blades rock?" Ok, I see this conversation is pointless.

Incidentally, how long did you hit the slingshots (and all of the other clubs you hit, which sounds like... No other clubs...) before you went to the Mizunos? 6 months is hardly enough time to be able to "go back" to anything.

Oh so I'm 14 because I'm not letting egotistic people make me not want my irons anymore? Oh dang, I like them, I shouldn't even have to reason why, they fit my swing, go through turf well, let me know where I hit the ball.

I have tried some demo cavity back irons but I seems too hit them about 5 to 10 yards longer, alottt higher, and scattered left and right. Blades? well, when i hit em solid they either go straight or fade.

Years ago golfers knew nothing but blades and everyone used 'em, tiger learned with blades.
