Titleist Tour Balata

The Royal - I believe it was the first hex dimple pattern ball. 1970 ish I loved playing that ball.
Wouldn't swear to it but I think Dunlop made it.

I loved the original Precept Laddie. It just worked for me. I still have 3 dozen brand new, still in the box, that I will probably never open.

I'm currently in love with the Srixon Z Star XV.

Would have to go with the Maxfli HT Balata or Slazenger Balata of the same era (when Slazenger Balls were actually a top quality product). The Titleist Tour Balata and then the Professional were also great balls, i just had a soft spot for the Maxfli and Slazenger. Probably because they were a little harder to find.......

My favorite was the red Callaway Rule 35. I liked their lively feel, plus I liked their claim that rule 35 was to have fun. I used to look down during a bad hole, see the Rule 35 logo on the ball, and remind myself to have fun. I still keep a few in my bag to look at now and then.

I think you illustrate a good point. There is no best ball of "all time'. There are only best balls [i]in their time[/i].

These were 2 of the best in their time, and I loved playing them 20 years ago.

Incidently, I think the balls that have been consistently the best in any time period over the last 50 or 60 years have been made by Titleist.

Yes, I really liked that ball. I did not notice any additional distance but really liked the way I could control spin on this ball.

The downside was that the ball (particularly the earliest versions) had the durability of wet tissue paper. I recall ordering 10 dozen from some 'Golf and Ski Shop" in the Northeast back around 2003 or so.

New balls? Taylormade Penta is the best ball for me followed by the TP Red LDP.

I used to love Titleist HP2's when I was a kid.

Also Callaway HX Tour 56. Loved the feel, didn't lose distance with it the way I always have with other really soft balls.

Anyone old enough to remember the old 'Podo' balls that some drug stores used to sell? Wrap a Pro V1 in an old sock and hit it to get some kind of feel for how this ball performed.

Gee, when I was a kid back in the early 70s, I loved the wound Air-Flites -- way outperformed the Kro-Flites. I kept one for so long and it got really beat up, but they had great feel. I liked the Precept EVs -- they were a truly great cheap ball. The Strata Straights were terrific. Now, I guess I prefer the e6. The Pro V-1s feel great but a little high priced.

What a great topic! Definitely too many to pick so here are mine:


Balata-
Maxfli HT-100 OR the Slazenger Balata - Both had great control, feel, and IMO better distance than other balata balls

Not balata, still wound-

Maxfli Revolution - Defenitely a game changer and one of the all time greats. Really miss this ball.


Next wave-

Maxfli A10- My pick for best ball ever. Actually IMO up thru this ball, Maxfli almost always released a better ball than titielst, but their upgrades always came after titleist.

Value pick - Precept U-TRI Extra distance. Great all around performance, Extremely consistant and a GREAT value in the mid-$20.


More recent-

Calaway HX tour and ProV1 X (Up until last years X). Feel that Callaway has taken steps back since the HX tour. That and the Prov1x were close to equal off the tee, but noticably better than anything else. Great control and feel as well. Now, the ProV1 x's are easily 15-20 yds off the tee longer for me.


Honorable mention - Nike One Black Tour, some of the earlier Srixon stuff (up thru the HR-X- 333 or whatever that number was).

I agree. A ball that was ahead of its time -- spun great yet was longer than the then-current soft golf balls of the era. It brings back memories of me teeing it up and hitting it with a Taylor Made Flexi-Twist Driver followed by a Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot 6-iron second shot.

A close second in this same era would by the Precept EV Extra-spin played by Nick Price: spun great and had decent distance. However, the cover would begin shredding after just a few shots.

Maxfli Revolution, the last wound ball I played.

Current, I really like the Srixon Z Star XV, but was gaming the Bridgestone B330S for several years, it was a great ball. The regular Z Star feels a bit better but for the trade off of distance/feel nothing works for my swing quite like the Z Star XV.

Now having said this about the current Z Star XV, I've heard that the [i]next[/i] version for next year combines the best of the current Z Star's feel with the distance of the Z Star XV. A Cleveland/Srixon tour rep is a member at our club and lets people try their new stuff this time of year. I haven't hit one myself, but some other guys at my club who have played them have raved about them...

Another fan of the Titleist Pro 100. Also like the Prostaff(think that was it) that had the Triuncated Cone dimple. Anyone remember those? Not sure if I got the brand right. Anyway, currently playing the Z-Star Tour yellow and absolutely love it.

Maxfli Revolution is the first ball I remember really wanting, and that really made a difference in my game when I was a junior. I found one last year and am keeping it just for the heck of it. I was pretty much always a Top Flite guy though, the original Top Flite Aero was my favourite for a long time, but I was always happy to find a Strata, they were great balls all the way up to the Tour Ace, now Callaway has everything they worked on for years, which is probably why I played the Tour iX for so long.

All that being said, I'm a yellow user now, Srixon Z-Star XV, fantastic ball, but the Revolution will always be the ball that I remember as being the top of it's time.
