Have YOU ever thought about quitting...

I am right now...
Last few times I've gone out, I really haven't felt like I'm having fun on the golf course. I moved here (Orlando Area) from Philly about 4 months ago, and Ive played a LOT of golf, like 2-3 times a week a lot. I have only one golf partner who's a really good golfer, and we've gone out about 1 time a week together, and now I HATE going out by myself. Back home I always went with my brother, a few of my friends, but now I'm solo most of the time. I am getting worse by the round; I used to shoot in the low 80's and last few rounds have been 90 and one close to 100. Yesterday, I really wanted to quit. I'm not hitting the ball at all like I used to, I guess I've been trying too many new things, and now I simply suck. Have you ever felt like quitting? What made you want to?

Oh ...without a doubt I've considered it ...and as it is now, my interest has slid a bit.
For the past 18 months I havn't been able to get out much and when I do I go as a single and usually play on my own & I too began to find my game fall way off. I also don't forsee much change in the next 18 months. So much so that when I did get linked up with someone ...I no longer trusted my swing ...which simply compounds the problem ..then you get too emabarrased to play with anyone thats any good so you go to a "Lesser" course to A) make it easier on your game and B) meet up with someone that is or has become comparably as bad.
All of which is a combination for laying the ground work to quit.
You'll work through it ...find some other people to play with along with your friend. Get involved with some new blood ...... Maybe play a bit less for a while. Where in Orlando do you play?

Lets see...

I've been playing 30/35 years or so so, yea. :)

However I don't think I've ever said "I Quit" but I have for sure taken a break when it gets stale or just less fun.

Its no biggie , if it's not your primary source of income and its not fun right now then why do it?

Take a break and come back when its fresh. Even the Pros have an off season and this is often why.

Stop playing for a bit. Go to the range instead, don't work on anything in particular, just enjoy the feeling of smacking the crap out of a golf ball. Always brings my mojo back.

Longer term -- find good people to play with. This requires effort on your part. Join a club, enter a league, or even just post a lonely hearts ad here in the Florida section. bye.gif

It can happen. Take a step back and maybe a month sabbatical. When you come back you will be fresh and ready to play.

It has worked for me in the past.

This past season I only played about 5 times or so, due to having 2 little kids at home and too much stuff going on at work. I became a little more serious about cycling and found it alot easier to find an hour or two free hours to ride than to find 3-6 hours free for golf.

Honestly, it was a refreshing time off. I recently played golf a few more times again and found my appreciation and excitement for the game again. Next season I should be back to normal 1-2 times per week golfing though.

If you are not having fun golfing, find another hobby to occupy your free time and come back to golf in a few months. Maybe that is all you need to get back into it.

Yes, because I sometimes feel like if I put the effort, time and energy into one of my other activities I would realize more gains in that arena. Golf doesn't always pay equal dividends on time investment.

Don't be so hard on yourself !! You will meet more golfers, and slow down on the swing changes !
As you know with this game, You will need to be kind to yourself !!! Playing as a single is a great
way to meet golfers and learn about people, Once you settle down, your game will be back !!!
So Hang In There !!!!

Play Golf.....Play Blades......Play Something Else.....Just Go Play.....

Homesick? Give yourself a full year to settle after your move. From experience I know it will take that long to acclimatize to a new environment. These factors will contribute to dissatisfaction in the activities which are supposed to be pleasurable. Don't beat yourself up over the golf game. Your higher scores are merely a symptom of external stimuli. Hope this makes sense.

Im with Jim, I want to quit every time I play. Not because of my score but because of how slow everybody plays, and how bad they all are. If my group is not the first group out, our 2, to 2.5 hour round is turned into 4.5, to 5.5 hours of aggravation and frustration. And instead of playing 54 holes we can only play 18 in around the same amount of time. All that standing around watching all the stupidity always makes me want to quit.

No matter how bad I play, and lately I'm playing pretty bad, I've never been able to "quit" for more than a month.

If you're like me, your game and your enthusiasm will return. Just give it a little time.

We get it... You're amazing and everyone else is awful, slow and stupid. You learned the game both right handed and left handed and could dominate anyone on this board. The world is full of idiots who can't play the game and they're all just in your way. Did I miss anything? My God it must be brutal to have to live in a world full of such stupid and untalented people. I apologize on behalf of every other golfer in the world for so absent - mindedly being in your way

Take a break. Look at the big picture. The difference between you shooting 82 and 92 is not going to change your life. With that being said, when you decide to play, you need to visualize success before the shot and execute when you step into the shot. Think of being over the ball as the execution box, and behind the ball as the visualization box, with a line down the middle behind the ball dividing the two. If you are not going to visualize a successfull shot, and you are not going to trust the shot, don't hit it. Your thoughts right now I'm sure are of bad things. (I'm not having fun, I can't do this, Why am I playing this bad, etc)

Take 2-3 weeks off. Come back and commit. But most of all, have fun. Try to enjoy the sport that is a big part of your life.

My wife is going to love the Idea of the "Sabbatical" for a few weeks...I really also feel like gaining weight has affected my swing, and watching too much golf channel has as well. Thank y'all so much for your words of wisdom!! :)

If you gained enough weight to affect your swing you better make some lifestyle changes. No offense intended - I don't know you, but you need to do something that gets your heart rate about 120bpm for 30-45 mins a day 5 days a week.

I did quit. It was miserable. Took me 3 years to get back to where I was before I quit. After golfing and being around it nearly all the time my entire life it was very difficult mentally without it. I would spend some time on here, but it wasn't the same as going to the course or going to the range.

I've gone through 2 distinct periods of making changes the last 2 years and both times I have wanted to quit. But I remember how I just didn't feel the same without it.

- And I live in Orlando and if you're not 80 or a member at a private club its difficult to find people to play with.

I quit about 10 years ago. I was a teaching pro playing to a 2hdcp, but my back and knees just did not allow me to enjoy the game. Almost 2 years ago I decided that I would try to play again, so I started by just going to the putting green. Did that for about 4 months, and went and bought a used set of Ping I3 Blades. Fast forward to present day, and I am back to 74-80 from the Blues, changed swing 4 times in this 2 year period, and have been teaching again.

I guess the break did me good......
