Need help understanding feel differences

Iron heads / shafts
Last set of irons I bought were R7s with PX 6.0 shafts. Loved the feel, ball flight, and most importantly, forgiveness (I'm between a 6 and 9 handicap, depending on how much I've been playing).

Over the last few weeks, I've hit a number of newer iron heads in a local store, and they've all felt harsh to me. I've hit:
  • 712 AP2, DG S300
  • JPX800 Pro, DG S300
  • MP 53, DG S300 and KBS Tour

Then, one of the guys in the shop handed me an iron from a set he just picked up -- S56 with PX6.0. Hit that, and it felt great to me.

So, my question is, am I most likely feeling differences in the shafts or in the heads? Both clubs that I like the feel of have cast heads and PX 6.0 shafts, all the others that felt harsh had forged heads and DG S300 (and the MP53 also felt about the same with the KBS Tour shaft in it).

I'm starting to get the itch to try something new with my irons, and with all the new, more forgiving forged options I was starting to look at going down that route. But now I'm thoroughly confused, since all the forged clubs I tried felt a lot harsher than I was expecting.

Anybody have any advice?

Probably the shafts.. I had some 07 X Forged with Project X 6.0's and they felt great. Only Project X shafts I've ever hit and probably the best feeling clubs I've hit.

That's just my opinion so take it for what it's worth.. And it's probably not worth much..

Maybe you didn't hit a "flush" shot with the forged irons? You hit a forged head on the screws and you will know it.

No, I did hit some flush shots with the forged irons -- even those good shots just didn't feel as good as the R7s or S56s. And a while back I played some Hogan Apex FTX irons with the hogan shafts (played them for about a year and a half before getting the R7s) -- those felt great, but they were a little too unforgiving.

It could be familiarity. I never judge an iron on the first test-drive because it feels "unfamiliar" to me. Once I have hit it two or three times I get a better idea of what I am working with and notice how they really feel a lot more. I also bring my irons to compare - the last time I was trying new stuff nothing felt great to me, but when my own irons felt bad I realised it was my swing that was off.

It may just be a matter of not liking the DG shaft, but to be quite honest, most folks are of the opinion that the DG, and especially the KBS Tour feel a lot smoother/les harsh than the Project X. Personally, I play a blended Titleist 710 CB/MB set with Project X 6.0 non-flighted straight in and couldn't be happier with the feel of the clubs. They feel nice and smooth, they give me a nice flat medium trajectory with just the right amount of spin. On a pured shot, they feel like nothing else, and on a not so good shot, they let me know it. Generally, forged clubs will have a softer feel than cast, but some of the newer cast clubs feel pretty good.

You may want to just look for someone who has a fitting cart full of shafts and try your Project X 6.0 in a few different forged heads.
