MX-23 or MX-25

can anyone who has played these two sets help me out deciding

A local golf shop is going to give me a sweet deal on a set of MX-23 as they are bringing in the new 25's, my question is are the 25's that much better or could I save some cash and get the 23's?

Right now I am playing a borrowed set of MX-20's to a hcp 14 and I just love them

any help would be great thanks in advance

I am playing 23's and have hit the 25's. Other than the metal used in the club heads, I didn't really find much a of a difference. The 25's are softer yes, but I like a little more feedback in an iron. You won't go wrong if you purchase one of these two models. I would personally save the cash, play the 23's, and get some nice hybrids for the bag.

I bought the 25s after hitting the 23s and many other irons. High ball flight and extremely forgiving. The 25s had a softer feel. I also wasn't too upset with the price, with todays clubs as high as they are.

I'd say-get the 25's. If you don't you'll always wonder if you would have hit them better. The buyer's remorse....

i hit them both last week and didn't find any difference between the two except the 23's were a little bit softer, other than that, everything else is the same.

save your money and go with the 23's. i've had mine now for 2 years and still love the way the look and feel. they never went out of style.

i doubt the 23 feel softer

The 25's are an easy choice once you hit both. I held off getting a set of 23's when I heard about these coming out and it's a significiant enough difference to be worth it. As someone else mentioned the shaft is lighter and the clubs do feel softer. I really love the short irons, some of the best I've hit and I hit a lot trying to decide. I tend to hit slightly towards the toe and don't have any problems with my shots. As a general rule I don't like the plastic inserts many clubs are going to but I don't even notice the medallion on the back.

These clubs are without a doubt winners.

I have a reasonably high (note, not He-man) swingspeed and am strongly considering getting a 4 or even 5-pw set, for the reason that I'm just NOT going to have a great deal of spare practive time over the next few seasons...

I'm strongly leaning towards the 4-pw because even with my limited playing and practice time, I still hit the 4 iron well enough to justify keeping it in the bag...

are shaft upgrades considered a custom option with either the 23's or 25's, or are they available with the heads at the basic listed price?

What did you use to clean the paint off with? Did you have to be real careful not to damage the clubs?

Zero risk of damage. I just used a common paint remover and Testors hobby paint and cleaned up excess with acetone. Paint remover does not do anything to metal.

what were the steps you took to do this, they look great and if I get a set I want to do this aswell

Apply any paint remover to the area you want to remove. I used a toothpick to dab it into the smallish area. Wait about 20 mins and rinse it off with water. Sometimes it just washes off in one piece, sometimes I had to use a scrub brush a few times to get it all off. Then I used another toothpick to dab the paint into the letters and let it pretty much dry for an hour or two. Of course you can't get the paint exactly into the letters, but just make sure you add enough to fill them. Then take a clean fine mesh cloth and soak a small area with Acetone and rub the new paint until the excess is gone and only the letters have paint. It's quite easy and if you screw up, just start over again.

Thanks for the great idea and detail info to accomplish it. I am getting some MX-25s Saturday and will definetly do what you have done. I realize Mizuno want to emphasize COG, but they look much better the way you did yours.

Did you play today like you had hoped? How were the irons?

I did play today and they were great. Typical soft Mizuno feel with very good playability. They help you on poor swings very well. They are a perfect forged iron for a mid-capper. Actually, there aren't many forged irons for pure middle hanicap players at all. These are as good as my all-time favorites, the Tourstage TS-202's.

Question: what are people's definition of a mid handicapper? I play to a 17.8 now - I have not hit these clubs but they are ones that I am seriously considering once I do get to hit based on people's feedback here, I love the way they look, etc.

Obviously once I swing, I will get a better idea for me - but I was just curious what people really think when they think of a mid handicapper and these clubs.

Having owned a set of the MX-23's and MP-33's and 32's, I have to say I was pretty disappointed in the feel of the 23's compared to the other Mizuno forgings. They were not harsh mind you, but they could have been cast for all I knew when comparing them to Mizuno's other softer forgings. The 25's would be my choice if I were looking at these two sets just based on the metal used in the 25's.

I think if people want a bargain of a forged set that feels decent but is plenty forgiving, the Tommy Armour 845C's or Titleist 804's are good choices as well. Heck, Billy Mayfair even plays the 804's on the PGA. Craig Stadler played the 845C's for a long time, (he might still be.) Just a couple ideas for those looking for more forgiving forged sets. :drinks:

Don't know if there is an actual definition, but I think most people think of a mid-handicap player haveing an index between 10 and 20. I'm a 16.1 and consider myself one along with the MX-25's from an equipment standpoint.

I think a lot has to do with your own strenghts and weaknesses and most importantly golf goals, not just handicap. I only play on weekends with no practice. My handicap leveled out at a 12 and was that for a couple of years. I always played player cavity backs since I thought I struck irons pretty well, love to work the ball and they look cool :drinks: . After switching to Tourstage TS-202's two years ago I have dropped myself to an 8. They are just so forgiving that they make up for my inconsitencies due to no practice, yet I still have forged feel. If my goal was to see how low I could take my handicap and was going to commit the time to allow it to happen, I would want a players cb at an 8. Since, I have only limited time to golf, I think it is great that I can maintain an 8 with forgiving irons.
