Fourteen HI-858

Fourteen has been the leader in driving irons on the JPGA Tour for quite some time now. The 858 features less offset, bounce and a thinner top line from its predecessor the 660.

Actually the Hi-660 came well AFTER the Hi-858, so the Hi-660 is actually the newer design. Both clubs feature offset although there was a Hi-858 Version 2 (Tour issue only) that had less offset. (Good luck finding one of those however). The Hi-660 features a lower COG for a higher launch and higher flight. It also features softer landings on the green. IMO, the Hi-660 is easier to hit off the deck so if you fancy the 18* 2-iron, the Hi-660 may actually be the better way to go. The Hi-660 is definitely the more attractive of the 2 clubs.

 

On the Japanese Tour, the SYB Concept MC-707T became popular because it has considerably less offset than the Hi-858. It was designed by the very same club designer for Japanese Tour Players who wanted less offset than the original Hi-858 provided. It is important to note that SYB and Fourteen are very tight Busienss Partners in Japan and therefore often share head designs with each other. SYB also builds graphite shafts for Fourteen's line of clubs. The face and sole shape of the SYB are virtually identical to the Hi-858 but the SYB's rear cavity is different, and much better-looking to my eye. Having less offset definitely makes the SYB hybrid iron less prone to hook. Also, you can also purchase the SYB Concept MC-707T as a "head-only" so it is actually less expensive than the Fourteen Hi-858 or Hi-660.
