Hey, I'm in the market for a new carry bag. I walk quite a bit and am not satisfied with my Taylormade carry bag that is around a year old now. The bag I have now is too heavy (I don't carry much besides my clubs), the legs don't go down properly all of the time, and there are metal "buttons" or snaps on the back (The kind that you would attach the rain hood to) that run against my back. I have heard good reviews on WRX about Ping and some about Titleist. I haven't seen many about Sun Mountain or Ogio though. Please post what stand bag you like the most. Also if I forgot a brand please feel free to say so. Thanks!

I'm maybe gonna buy a PING 4UNDER pretty soon. It's their lightest bag ever so I'll see how that goes.

Your best bet?

Get a Sun Mountain 3.5 or a Ping Hoofer, and ONLY use it for walking. A lightweight stand bag, no matter what the manufacturers tell you, will get killed if you keep strapping it on the back of a cart. You either have to cinch the cart strap down so tight that you crush what little structural support there is, or you leave it loose and let your bag and clubs flop around like a rag doll.

And unless you just love the titleist name, save some money and buy a SM -- they make Titleist's carry bags for them. Compare the two links below:

May seem like a pain, but that's the best way your new bag last.

 • 2 weeks later...

I sell anywhere from 60-80 carry bags per year and this is how I rate them.

#1 Ping. They have the best strap system, an excellent pocket layout, and the materials used are very durable. Pricing a tad high.

#2 Sun Mountain/Titleist. One in the same. They have some zipper issues and the colours seem to fade more quickly than Ping. Good balance and fair pricing.

#3. Ogio. Great engineering but man are they heavy! Materials lately seem to be cheaper and less durable..

#4. Nike. Sone very nice layouts and good gel straps but overall their best are way too heavy. Cool colours this year.

#5. Tie, Callaway and Taylor Made. The Callaway strap system is mediocre and TM's not much better. Neither are great deals except on clearout and even then Ping or SM is a better buy. TM in particular has a confusing array of models.

Best buys overall for a balance of functionailty and price remain Ping Hoofer and 4 Under. The Latitude is too heavy.

I can identify with this post.

My perfectly good Titleist ultra lite stand bag got replaced because the bold orange (and black) colour scheme faded to a very unmanly pink.

This will be my first ever season with a Ping stand bag: I picked up a brand new 4 Under for only $88 at a clearance sale. a 2010 model year.

Not sure about the durability of that retractable elastic main strap, but we will see.

This is a great thread. Lots of good info. I myself am looking at getting a new bag and from what I hear I like the Ping bags best.

I have an old Ping Hoover that I've had for 5-6 years and it still is in great shape. No color fade, zippers still work only complaint is the stands don't kick out like they used to but it's still in great shape. If I wasn't wanting a change I'd keep it.

I had the Ogio Nexos bag for a while. Great dividers and pockets, biggest issue was the actual legs on the bag. One of them started having issues and made it very unstable so I stopped using it. I have the Ogio Grom XX on order but I'm not sure a 14-way is going to work, especially with all the walking I do. I'm going to go to Dick's sports tomorrow and look at some more items.

EDIT: Boy was I wrong. THis Ogio Grom XX is PHENOMENAL.

In the last 4 years I have owned:

SM Four5
SM Three5
Ping Hoofer Vantage
TE Exotics
Fujikura
SM Three5 (current model).

Exotics and Fujikura had little rivets/buttons on the inside of the top of the bag that scratched my graphite shafts up. Lame. Quality and build was not great.

Ping quality was outstanding and it never had any problems except I didn't like that the legs didn't stand out very far so it would easily get tipped over.

Every Sun Mountain bag for me has been head and shoulders above the rest. I've never had a tear, rip, or fading color and because they have such a wide stance they don't fall over. Someone said they're like a TM driver because you get them home and they fall over??? I've never experienced that.

Anyhow, I no longer own the Exotics, Fujikura, and Ping but can't part with the SM's!

All the name brands seem to be about the same, it comes down to the individual and what you want or need in a bag. Make a list of all the features you want/need and then see which ones fit the bill. I'm sure the build quality will be similar/close between all brands. All brands and models may and do break somehow, so check the warranty and usually top manufacturers have a great warranty on their products.

I've always thought historically, Sun Mountain makes really ugly bags but their recent lineup seems a lot nicer...

My vote is Sun Mountain and ... Mizzy (I know they aren't known as a bag company, but a friend gave me a GTO a few years ago, and I actually find it very convenient and comfortable ... ).

I've owned 2 ogios, and when they both failed within 3 months, the employees where not surprised one bit. One sun mountain had a screw come loose and the support leg poked through, took it back to golfsmith and the guys said they've never seen a SM bag fail
I'm not surprised either.

My experience with Ogio has been very poor. Their bags, while fully featured, are heavier and break down within months of purchase. I've had enough bad experience with Ogio (both their products and their service) that I won't use their products any more.
I agree, i had an ogio bag years ago and it didnt make it through an entire season.

Mine lasted two months. I wouldn't recommend an Ogio bag to anyone.

Have bought Callaway, Titleist and Ogio. Bought the Ogio based on rave reviews but I returned it after 1 day. Engineering and quality were lacking IMO. Older Callies were great. New ones are solid if you get a good deal. Titleists are outstanding and pricey.

Not only is Sun Mountain's quality better, if something does go wrong their customer service is impeccable. My bag had a small tear along a pocket seam, so i took it in to the golf shop I'd bought it at to ask them about the best way to go about getting it repaired. They called SM, who repaired it for free, and paid for shipping both ways. Even more, the turnaround time was only a week. They've earned my business for as long as I play this game.

Owned an OGIO, stand legs turned out to be way too close together when deployed. Very unstable. Legs started drooping within a few days. Shoulder strap padding wore out and started digging into my shoulders.

Went to a Sun Mountain 4.5 and could not be happier. Great layout, totally durable, great legs that swing out wide and snap back firmly, fits in a cart or on a push-cart perfectly. Love it.

I've never been a big fan of PING's bags, but I think the proof is in actually owning one and carrying it every day. They do seem to get a lot of love here.

I'd like to see more divider options from Sun Mountain's stand bags. Seems like there's either 4 way or 14 way which is the extreme on both sides of the spectrum.

Have yet to heard anyone mention Titleist. Do not overlook Titleist. I have used a Titleist bag for about 4 years now after changing from taylormade (good bag while it lasted but just wasnt a fan). Then I bought a titleist one and loved it. Comfortable, durable. relaible, kept the clubs safe and had enough room for everything i needed, went on a cart well and wasnt very heavy. Only reason I've switched is because my college gives the golf team new bags each year and luckily the past 2 have been Titleist. Will never use another bag. except maybe a Ping, cause I have been wanting to try one of them. Sun Mountain and Ogio just never really got me excited, didnt find anything that really attracted me to the bag. Theres my 2 cents. Hope it helps someone in choosing the best bag for them
