You just reminded me that I needed to post an update.

I went to Golfdom on Saturday afternoon, just sorted of drifted into the store and was wandering aimlessly, and ran into Matt Trenton, who is the fitter and manager there. He surmised that I was there for a fitting (I was holding some clubs and my shoes), greeted me warmly, and invited me to get loosened up on the sim even though we were about 10-15 mins early. After a brief intro conversation and some paperwork - this was a free driver fitting offer that Callaway hooked me up with, he got me warmed up hitting 6-irons and then explained how their system worked and a breakdown of all the data that the simulator was showing. Moved on to the driver - had me hit my own driver until we got some good data, went through my stats and pointed out what could be improved. Since I had expressed interest in testing the Razr Fit, he set me up with one with the same shaft I was currently playing and went from there. He was constantly checking and adjusting, swapped a few different shafts and adjusted weight and face settings, and even brought in one of his personal shafts for me to try. We spent about an hour and twenty minutes in total, no rushing, no attitude, just great fitting knowledge and service. He knows his stuff, is very easy to talk to, and best of all, wasn't pushy about getting me to buy anything. He even threw in some sleeves of balls for me to demo. I didn't interact with anyone else in the store or have time to browse, but Matt was great to deal with and I think he was spot on with his fitting as well. He's definitely changed my opinion of the place, to a degree, and I'd gladly go back to consult him or get stuff through him should the need arise. The only problem is, with the amount of equipment I buy, I can't afford to pay retail

puppetmaster, Glad to hear the fitting went well. I also had a fitting by Matt several years ago. It was just as you said, he is very knowledgable, takes his time to get it right and very good about explaining the process and what he's looking for.

It's just that the damn salesmen all seem to have the "I know more about golf and clubs than you, becasue you are pawn scum" type of attitude.

Gald to hear Matt is still adding some class to the place.

Just to be clear, it's a new store? They didn't buy out Baltimore/Washigton Golf that was on York Rd and just take over their space did they?

Not sure about Golfdom either. No concrete examples of attitude, but it was a different feeling than any other golf place I'd gone so far in my life. I am still glad to hear that the bi box stores are tapping this Metro DC/MD area for new stores.

ohhhhh....i retract my statement then...lol. I've met a couple of MD Wrx'ers but still have not played a round with anyone. I wish a WRX bag tag would come out soon so we can see who's part of the Golfwrx community.

J, I had a response typed and it didn't post somehow. But of course other MD'ers are invited. perhaps we could even carpool. I still need to meet up with you at Timbers some time. My travel schedule is crazy this month and next month, but maybe I squeeze some comp time in for a round at Timbers.

Yup, he's great and I'd recommend him to anyone looking for a local fitting. Especially if they're interested in Callaway stuff, since it is a CPC. I think they have a Ping fitting center too, can't remember but I thought I saw it.

Sounds good! Havent played Timbers since the first time I've played it. Great news, I've met Matt before and definitely a great guy. Made me change my mind about Golfdom's customer service, well at least with respect to him. Still remember stepping in there and no one helping me and watching me like I was gonna steal something. Then met Matt and was awesome to talk to, knows his stuff. I might go there to get a Callaway fitting, maybe even try a RAZR Fit to challenge the RBZ Tour I just purchased.

I swung by there on Sat., May 5. Just a big coming soon sign up front. But the flooring was done, some display racks were it. I think Don and Kevin at the Tysons store told me that the stores were to open exactly one month from the Friday before Father's Day. That would make the opening day this Friday, May 11. Time to see if the announcement cards are in the mail.

Golfsmith had some good giveaways on Friday and great giveaways on Saturday.

Well, Father's Day is the big sale day targeted by golf stores. I guess the sooner the stores open, the more business they would do. I'll post here if I get the announcement card in the mail.

I just called the Tysons store and was told that the soft opening for Fairfax and Sterling stores will be on Friday (5-18-2012). The grand opening will be on 5-25-2012.

I'll stop by on Friday. Smaller crowds. I remember the Saturday of the Tyson's opening. The manager told me that there were lots of people in the store that didn't play the game but were there just for the free stuff.

Well, from the Tyson's opening, the manager, Don, told me that my name actually got drawn for tickets for the US Open at Congressional last year. But since I already left the store to go back to work, they gave the tickets to someone present in the store.

Free stuff can range from Golfsmith gift cards, to a shirt and hat, to complete club sets (not box sets). I remember a RAZR Hawk driver and an R9 irons set being given away last year on Friday. On Saturday, Don told me that they were collecting names for two drawings (morning and afternoon) for complete sets and bag, a TM set and a Cobra set. Someone won a case, not a box, of ProV1s on Friday late afternoon.

I guess the key is that you have to be in the store to win the prize.

Edit: I'll talk to Don and Kevin at Tysons. If I find out the schedule on what and when they have the drawings for certain things, I'll post it here.

My bad for being late to this party, but where is this Fairfax one going to be?

The Tysons one would be super convienant since my building is right there but I am onsite in DC every day so dont get there that much. The fair lakes GG is ok, but they dont seem to update their used section all that much.

The Golfsmith in Fairfax will be at the old Border's Books location at the corner of Rt 29 and Rt 50. Didn't stop by this store over the weekend. I did stop by the Sterling, VA store, and the store was stocked and looked ready to go. Since the Sterling store is smaller, I wonder if it will open earlier than the Fairfax one.

The one in Sterling is right next to the Target in the Potomac Run Shopping Center (the one that has Michael's, TRU, etc.). I peeked in the front door on Sunday and saw that almost everything was stocked and ready to go. The manager came out and asked me if I was one of his new employees and let me in the front door. The only thing missing was the clubs that stock the used club section. He said that comes in last since the used clubs are pulled from other stores and not from their warehouse in TX.
