Bandon Dunes in Early April

Anybody been at this time of year? Curious as to how the weather generally is, crowded, ease of getting 36 in, etc. A buddy and I are currently planning a 4 day trip for 2013 and would love to go in the offseason while still being able to get 36 in a day. Looking to do the trip the Sat - Tuesday before the Masters return home on Wed. and then play 18 at our home course each morning before watching the Masters for an epic week of Golf!

Thanks in advance

The weather on the Oregon coast can be a mixed bag in April. It can be raining sideways one minute, windy the next then sun after that. I would suggest making sure you have proper rain gear and gloves, towels and the like for wet weather as well as some clothes that adapt to sun easily. As far as getting 36 in, it shouldn't be a problem if you schedule your tee times well in advance and stay at the resort ...as they give the best times to guests.

PM me if you need any more info, I love talking about Bandon.....

cheers, spin

You can never bank on good weather on the Oregon Coast. Weather can be bad any time of year. In my opinion, that's why going somewhat off-season is the way to go at Bandon. I've played over Thanksgiving weekend a few times and it's been great both times. Rates are better, less people there. By April you can probably swing 36, especially after daylight savings (can't do that near the winter equinox).

I played with a couple of guys who were there about a month ago and they said they are having contamination issues with their greens. I'm interested in hearing if that's true and how bad. They said they were a mess at the time.

I was there in mid-Feb. No issues with the greens that I could tell. I've been making an annual trip to BD for 10 years and suspect that I might notice if something was up with the greens.

Just a thought; Bandon is true links golf and the greens don't "hold" like many are used to. This takes some getting used-to if not familiar. Always an awesome trip.

Can't agree more with the statement from Swingem " the greens don't "hold" like many are used to". black%20eye.gif Always try to land the ball in front of the greens and let it roll onto the greens. Also, by the green side, use your putter instead of your wedge. (There is no shame for doing that. :man_in_love: )

Where is the bell located? old Macdonald? BTW, I hit my longest driver there - 350 yards....with the wind blew from behind. :clapping:

Was there during President's Day weekend.

First day was decent with hardly any rain. Although it hailed really hard for a few minutes and the green was completely covered with hail stones. Five minutes later, they were all melted.
Second day was perfect. See my avatar. That's 5th hole tee shot on Bandon.
Third day has horrid. So wet and windy for the front 9. It got better in the back.

Can't wait to go back!

While I can play 36 holes at most venues, Bandon is a bit of a different story. After 18, you are so windblown and wiped out from playing golf at a level you've never played before, my playing partners and I each day played 18, hit the bar, ate some lunch and then napped!

I know there are guys who do it, meaning play 36/per day, but I'm a hard core golfer and even for me it was a nit tough.

Went to Bandon first week of April in 2011. It rained...only at night. Had awesome weather. Lows in mid to high 30s and highs in high 50s. It was sunny and breezy. Best trip of my life (golf-wise). Was ready for rain, but it didn't!

Played Old MacDonald today...there was NO ONE there, tee sheet looked empty, probably saw less than 20 people on the course total.

Played at 1200pm and walked off 18 at 305pm.

Weather was supposed to be thundershowers, rained/hailed for 15 minutes total, rest of the afternoon was sunny with cloudy periods.

Around 40ºF all day getting colder as you got closer to the ocean but I golfed in a golf shirt and long sleeve compression shirt for most of the day.

Bandon Dunes/Pacific Dunes tomorrow for 36

Just so you know Preserve is not open until May 1st. They don't have the tee decks ready although some staff have played it off mats...

But not open to the public until May 1st.

Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes are two of the most breathtaking courses I can imagine in the entire world.

Don't listen to the weather report just make sure you have your rain gear with you, but expect the best and prepare of the worst.

Personally liked Old MacDonald the best as I've never played TRUE links golf, and I would assume Old Mac is the closest you can get on this continent.

Bandon Trails is quite underrated, it is probably the best GOLF course of the 4, just doesn't have the views of the two Dunes courses.
