The current Aldilia generation

comparing some old shafts with the new.
Hi Guys,

In a search for a current generation shaft I got a bit confused reading some of the Aldila topics.

Aldila used NV in some of their shaft names. (NV, NV Voodoo, rip'd NV) Do they stand for similar characteristics?

I like the normal NV X65 and the VSproto X65, so is it safe to buy a rip'd NV X65 (Can't test that one here)

In another topic I read the rip'd NV is a low flying shaft, is it much lower that the NV? It scares me a bit since I also have an Aldila protopype 65X and it stays to low, so if the rip'd NV is aldila's new low flying shaft than it's probably not smart.

Anyway in short: what new model can I compare with the feel and flight of the VSproto X65 and NV 65X;)

The old shafts graph: http://www.aldila.co...-fitting/guide/

(PS I tried the RIP Gamma, that seems to be a totally different shaft, even higher than the VSproto)

Cheers!

I can say that NOTHING will fly lower than a X Flex Protopype. If someone has another shaft, I would like to see it. So if you are afraid the RIp'd NV will fly lower, no worries.

I have hit all of the RIP's except the NV version. I can't figure out where it fits in compared to the Alpha. Both are advertised as low launch low spin. Torque may be lower in the Alpha so may feel harsher.

The NV still gets a TON of play on tour, so dont worry about it being out of date

The RIP'd NV flies higher than the original NV.

Based on what? Aldila has an informational booklet at the bottom of their web page (http://issuu.com/aldilainc./docs/2012aldilacatalogfinalversion/31) and in it is a chart showing the launch and spin of all of their shafts. The RIP alpha has the lowest launch and spin, RIP'd NV is next, followed by the original NV then the Voodoo NV . On the flip side, Titleist's driver shaft comparison chart says the RIP'd NV has a higher launch and spin than the original NV, and way more than the RIP alpha (according to them, it plays like the RIP beta). I'm not sure what is up with Titleist's chart, but most of the people that I've seen on here that have hit the RIP'd NV say it plays similar to the RIP alpha, but has better feel due to the higher torque. I'm myself am still waiting to hit one...

Thanks, good to know that protopype really is a bad one, so it isn't me;)

Interesting charts, in real live experience the VSproto is only slightly higher than the NV, on the charts it looks like miles. Aldila's new Phenom is their new high launching shaft right? But lower than the VSproto! Confusing;)

Anyway I am not even close to a tour player so I probably shouldn't be to anal about it anyway;) It will be the rip'd NV!

Yeah I was going off of the Titleist chart.

You should be pretty happy with RIP'd NV. It has a slightly higher launch than the RIP Alpha, but feels much smoother. I have been playing both the Alpha and the RIP'd NV, and prefer the feel and launch of the RIP'd NV in my R9 Superdeep, but go with the RIP Alpha in my R11. Hope it works for you.

How do you feel the flexes of the two compare? I see that the RIP'd NV comes in S, X, and TX, but the RIP only has S and X. Are they the same, with the TX being the stiffest, or does the RIP X = RIP'd NV TX?

Found a graph a few days ago that showed the x of the rip'd NV was for swingspeeds a fraction slower than the x of the original NV. It was a small difference, most of it being overlap between the two. And the TX of the rip'd being, mostly overlap again, for slightly higher swingspeeds. Unfortunately I can't find it anymore, not sure if I saw it on the Aldila website...

The RIP'd NV feels softer than the Alpha, but both shafts hold up well with my swing. If anything the RIP Alpha feels about a half flex firmer, and more stable, especially when swinging harder. The RIP'd NV allows you to feel more kick into impact, and can get whippy if you get to quick on the downswing.

@Golf Father: What is your swingspeed, seems the rip'd NV would be best for someone swinging a fraction slower than you?

Maybe this is why the rip'd NV comes in a TX next to the X.

What I think about current Aldila shaft is the shaft is too boardy and geared toward fast swingers. Also the price tag is too steep compared to 2-3 years ago. My favorite Aldila shaft is NVS. When the shaft is selling around $70, I thought it was OK. I'm hoping Aldila would make the latest shafts for average golfers with more affordable price. I would think 3 times before spending $200 on a shaft.

Just buy another NVS. I have been playing NV since dirt was created and nothing has kicked it out of my driver. Like was posted above the NV still gets plenty of play on tour. Last tourney I went to I saw several NVS too. I haven't liked any of the newer Aldila shafts I have tried.

Driver SS is around 108-110, and I am playing the RIP'd NV and RIP alpha in stiff. I tried the RIP in an X and it was just too stout for me, a lot of drives to the right and distance loss. I also tried a RIP alpha 80 in stiff and found that it had a lower ball flight, with a consistent baby fade, but I like the feel of the 70 more. The RIP'd NV does seem to behave better on my smoother swinging days, but both shafts give good distance and ballflight with good swings.
