Cobra the dominant force?
Is it correct to say that Cobra is the dominant force on the long drive circuit? If so, why? Who are other popular choices?

Yes I would say Cobra is the most dominant force in longdrive because if you actually hit Cobra you would know why. The ball just rockets off the clubface, very stable when swinging at 140+mph, durable, nice sounding, just to name a few. The other clubheads that are around are SMT, BANG, KRANK, PING, ALPHA, CALLAWAY, just to name a few. for some reason unknown to me, there are alot more componant heads than mainstream heads out there.

Oh yeah, Cobra is a great head, Pings, no one has hit one of those in comp since the 90's. When we had the TISI tecs in 5 degrees.

Alpha is the same, only big guy to hit well is Luriette.

Callaway, Mobley and he isnt doing well this year. Hasnt made it past 4 rounds since he won.

Plus only guy to use Callaway.

SMT is big also, alot of good hitters.

And for Krank, they had a good showing. Had a guy in the Finals ranked #1 above BIG Z by 7 yards. Krank guy got 7th.

There are so many heads out there, its up for grabs....

If memory serves me, I believe that Sean won a couple of times with a Dunlop head. Bottom line if you can turn those speeds you can win with anything. Cobra just has more due to their sponsorship of the pinnacle demonstration team. Over time each one switches to a Cobra head with the right set up. When Pavlet first came he was hitting a TISI farther than any SS they could get in his hands---eventually they got the right combination. Bottom line is free equipment or pay to play equipment---doesn't matter one head isn't any better than the other.

The trick is to find the best combo for your swing (head, shaft, flex, swing weight, etc...). This isn't always an easy task. I personally use the SMT Encore with a variety of different shafts and get the best results. I can switch to the SMT Deep Bore or any Cobra head...my swing speed stays the same, but my ball speed drops. I have a friend who is exactly the opposite with the SMT heads. Another fellow LD competitor (Idrive400yards) generally gets his best results using a Cobra head (although he is evaluating SMT). Different heads will react differently based on how you make contact, shaft preference, speed, loft preference, etc... Try to find a club fitter in your area with a launch and swing speed monitor and experiment with different heads. If you are in the Raleigh, NC area, PM me and I will hook you up with one of the best. Hope this is helpful...

The question us mere mortals will never know is it the head or is it the guy swing the club. Cobra doen't sell their long drive heads to the public.

Bigbo

I have a 4.5 and 6.5 SS 427, a 5.5 and 6.5 SZ 350 Tour, and a 6.5 XX Speed. Cobra does sell the long drive heads to the public--you just need the right shop and rep. that can get it done. What Cobra does not sell to the public is the Tour X speed drivers or the Tour Cobra (MacGregor) blades. Ironically you can get some Tour HS9 drivers (big deal).

Also, why the heck would an avg golfer want anything lower than a 7.5 head to golf with? If you are a Longdriver, than you can buy, if not, than why bother? That is the one thing I dont get, if you need a low lofted driver because you hit it too high, than you need lessons.

The first thing is I am a long driver and do compete as much as I can and with swing speeds in the 120 mph

and a 50 in shaft we use very low lofted drivers. And no corba will not sell the public any thing less than 8.5 heads. Call them and you will get the same answer I got. Corba keeps the low lofted heads for their long drive team and a selected few other people.

you need to get a faster swing if you say you compete in longdrive because 120 is not gonna cut it. and yes you can get low lofted cobra drivers, not thru them directly but thru your cobra rep, and local golf shop. it helps if your in tight with them and spend alot of money thru the company and thats where they can help you out. cobra will not just sell to anyone who says they compete in longdrive, you need to prove yourself also. at 120 i would still stick with a 7.5* head though, it takes a faster swing to get the perfect launch and

spin for a head lower than 7.0, i let people at the range hit my low lofts and watch them barely get the ball off the ground. and these are people with halfway decent swingspeeds.

What I am wondering is why you didn't see my age at the bottom of my post. 120 mph at the age 0f 58

5ft 7in tall and 160 pounds is plenty of speed for super seniors. I have tried for six months to buy one of those heads. After a hundred tries I gave up. Now if you know someone who will sale me a new one I would thank you.

BigBo......

I also am a Pro Longdriver, for 5 years, Open Div. of course. Have won 4 events and avg. 365 with 48 inch, 6 degree XXXX shaft. I know what low loft heads need to get up.

Believe me, I know tons of Super Seniors in your Div., and they still swing in the 130's. Like idrive400 said, I would diffenetly stick to the 7.5 heads. I have 6 heads from Cobra that I dont use and will keep that are 4.5 to 6.0 lofts. And not all Super Seniors hit the low low lofted heads. I have about 10 Super Seniors and Seniors who hit 9 degrees in Krank Golf heads. 7.5, at your age is great to hit.

I know high schoolers who swing in the mid 20's, and they have to dig deep every swing to get the low heads up. Not worth it. Besides, not that many events to compete in anymore.

I know I wish there were more events to enter. I guess I will try to make feburary's event. I didn't say I couldn't swing faster than 120 I was just telling him it was not bad for old guys. I have most every head know to man except the cobra xx speeds and I use a encore at the moment 6.8 loft and it is just about the right launch angle. waiting on the new Geek failsafe2 to try.

Thanks for the post.

Ok Sandy you say I can buy a cobra xx speed

How about a 6.5 If so email me at mccourys@centex.net

Thanks Bigbo

Last time I checked I wasn't a Cobra rep., and if I did sell you one of mine I'm sure my ability to get anymore would end right there. If you are calling Cobra directly you are going to get a NO everytime--most of those people don't know about the heads let alone the tour only equipment (what you don't know can't --------). You need to establish yourself with a big proshop (spend money) and a good rep. (very easy to tell just by talking to them for 5 minutes). I am 66 years old 6'1" 190 lbs. and still turn in the 130s at the senior competitions, and let me assure that ain't winning nothing anymore, even with 5 in the grid. Most of the guys that are winning the senior events I have gone against are in their early to mid 50s and are still easily turning 140.

Also what's the big deal with Cobra heads, other than last year it has been a long time since a Cobra head won. Dunlop, SMT etc. etc. Those you can get as low a loft as you want almost immediately. Same COR and often times better looking heads to boot.

Well let me see with your age at 66 you would have been a super senior 55 and older with a swing speeds of 130 or better with good smash factor and ball speed that puts you around 340-350 yards. Well you just beat last years world champion who won it with 326 yards.

Better get your old calculator repaired since it don't take into account conditions, humidity, off center hits, grass moisture, wind. I suggest you check what Zuback was turning last year in the finals and then run your little calculations again. It was in the high 140s and he got 326 out of it period--by your calculations he should have gotten around 375. Spend a little more time on the long drive circuit in all conditions and less time on the simulator with your smash factor. 125-130 has won nothing for me in the last 2 years (yes they were in the grid). Some runner ups and thirds but so what. Swing speed is only part of LDA competition. You must deal with accuracy, wind, humidity, heat or lack of it, grass conditions (wet or dry), and slope or lack of it for the entire grid.

I am sorry bigbo for not seeing your age, 120 ss and 58 is not bad but still won't go far in the senior/super senior division. These divisions are at times hitting it right up there with the open division in terms of distance, and these guys are still swinging at 135+. Cobra is a great head but like vinceRKG said, it's easier to get SMT, KRANK, ALPHA, BANG, ASHTON in lower lofts if you chose. you may also check out sellingerspowergolf.com and see if they have any used Cobra low lofts for sale.

Thanks for the info. Art doesn't have any at the moment. He just has the 8.5. It is no big deal I just wanted to hit one. LOL!!! Our friend in the last post must have a sense of humor. I know how far the LDA guys hit it. I competed aganist the super senior champion last year in Dallas. he bested me by 12 yards and I wasn't my best that day.

Thanks again Bigbo
