Remember if you try to build your own with any old iron heads the swingweights will be crazy. A featherweight 3 iron and a barbell for a pw. The heads have to be all the same weight for this to work.

 

Yeah, don't try this with off the shelf heads.

 

I'm curious about trajectories- I can see the distance gaps being equal, but I can also see the short irons going very high and the long irons going very low. One of the benefits of having differing lengths is to control loft progressions so your short clubs don't need to be so weak and your long irons don't have to be so strong. This helps you flight the ball properly.

 

It seems like if the only difference is the lofts, you'll make great contact, but it would be very hard to flight a 3 iron on a proper trajectory.

i can't see myself being anywhere close to comfortable chipping and pitching with a PW/SW/LW that is the same length as my 3-iron. i'd have to choke down past the grip.

The reason longer equals farther for a golf club has to do with the tangential velocity of the clubhead. For the same d(theta)/dt at your shoulders and body (let's say an 80% swing) the velocity at the end of the arc will be greater for a longer arc (longer club and that's also why taller people have a natural advantage in golf, they move can their body slower and get the same clubhead speed or move their bodies the same rate and get higher clubhead speed). Also, the arm-golf club unit is a class 3 lever so the longer the club, the greater amount of work you need to do to move the same load.

I know this is a really old thread that got resurrected. My good buddy (frequent playing partner) plays 1 iron clubs. He is probably 6'3" or so and has been playing them for a few years. His irons are 39", I think he said, which is about the length of a normal 5 iron. He plays pretty consistently with his irons. He said the best thing is that he can make the same swing with all his clubs, and the worst is that when his swing is off, it is off for every club.

I actually tested a set on a launch monitor with the owner, myself and another golfer. Very mixed results, probably because regular length clubs threw off the 1 iron set owner and we were thrown off by his clubs. Kind of hard to blind test. Personally, I lost club head speed with all the irons which was probably due to a tempo thing.
