First time, I will probably consider it an accident and move on. Often if it was truly an accident the party to blame comes up to offer an apology.

But second time, now you are getting your ball back. I pick it up, climb into my cart, and drive it all the way back to you. "Here you go. Don't hit into me again or its coming back at you on the fly."

I have NEVER had anyone hit into me a third time. Sometimes they get testy and say something stupid like "it was an accident, get over it" - but this doesn't cut it because I simply reply "No, the first time you hit into us it might have been an accident. This time it was intentional."

I have seen the damage up close and personal that a ball can do. People who intentionally hit into others are quite literally taking a chance on possibly killing someone.

I find it amazing that people will INTENTIONALLY hit a ball AT someone. What the hell is going on in the world today? I was playing two weeks ago and hit a terrible pull off the tee. My playing companions shouted fore as I was quite literally dumbstruck at the drive. Thankfully it flew over the heads of the guys on the tee of the hole running back in our direction. I felt that if I would have hit one of these gentlemen that I might have put the clubs away forever. It scared the "you-know-what" out of me. So to have people hit into you purposely is just out of my perception of reality. You could kill someone, you could maim someone. Some people just suck. Hopefully these types get whats coming to them.

It happens. Some people get waaay too uptight about it.

I really appreciate the attitude of people whose first though is: "perhaps it was a career drive" or "perhaps they just didn't see us."

There were a group of guys behind my group a few weeks ago. They were probably 240ish out on a par 5. It's unfortunate, but most inexperienced players from that far away just pull a fairway wood, and try to get it as close to the green as possible. (They'd probably be better served hitting a 5 or 7 iron, but whatever.) The guy carried the ball about 220 and it landed just short of the green and rolled right to the center. Actually got to about 12 feet from the pin. They were clearly inexperienced players. They should have yelled "fore" but were probably shocked that the guy hit it so well. One of the guys in our group was upset, he was going to toss it into the woods or fire it back at them. I talked him down and made sure that he understood that if he did that, we'd be watching our backs all day, and they'd probably be embarrassed and feel bad all day, pretty much spoiling everyone's round. I asked him what he thought might happen if we waited by the green and then congratulated him on his shot.

So we did. We let him know that we were standing right there and that it rolled right between us toward the hole. He was worried that we'd be mad. He even said: "i thought you guys might be here waiting to kick my a--". The guy from our group (who is kind of a notorious hot head) had calmed down and was kind of excited that the guy was sorry. He had realized by that point that the guy did not hit into us on purpose and had quite likely hit a career shot. Without me saying anything he said: "I hope you sink it for eagle. In fact, if you sink that, I will buy you a drink when the cart girl comes by" (we were on a par 5 so he assumed it was for eagle.) The guy said: "it's just for birdie. it would be my first in like 2 years." So my friend chuckled and said: "I'd love to see you sink it."

So we waited until he putted. He made it and my buddy bought him a drink on the next hole when the cart girl was there.

I thought it was awesome because it was a situation where he could have been a jerk and made everyone uncomfortable, but instead everyone had fun with it.

We were not hit into for the rest of that day, which was cool. They shook hands and had a cool conversation in the parking lot before we left, which was even cooler.

I hit very close into some people on the green today. Had 245 left on a par 5 and was just hitting a hybrid from the rough. Hit a low stinger and ended on the front side of the fringe. When I got up there I apologized although everyone was congradulatig me on an awesome 2nd shot.

They were all very understanding and cool about it

*Keep in mind I'm a short hitter. So going 245 was a LONG shot so I was 99% sure I was safe to hit. Guess now.*

There no excuse, first off, if you playing on a public crowed course. You know that it's going to be slow. If that's the case don't play that day. I avoid weekend just for that reason. But if someone hits into my group, the first time I consider it an accident. The second time the ball going right back to the shooting group. Third time, im walking to the group, and we are having a real problem. I'm tired of people not being considerate. Slow play has become part of weekend golfers and is to be expected, even though no one likes it. So if your on a schedule, consider playing another day, or ask to play through if the hole ahead is open.

Played yesterday afternoon. 17th hole, Par 5, decent gradual ascention (about 30' the whole length of the hole), and a dog-leg right, 560yds.

As we were coming off the green on 16, we noticed a twosome on the tee for 17 just teeing off. They just come off 10. So, we had to wait. No big deal really. Would have been nice to ask and not just go off, but "whatev". They were safely out of range and we tee off.

My drive ( Rocketballz!) put me 275 away from the hole (according to my GarminS1). So we see them approach the green and we all hit again. I aim, draw back, and unload my Rocketballz 3W on the (flourescent yellow Titleist NXT Tour S) ball... watching it fade into the setting sun. The two on the green look up, look around, and get off the green in haste.

As we approach the green, I can easily spot my (flourescent yellow Titleist NXT Tour S) ball on the back of the green. Whoopsie! It appears I ended up rolling the ball to the back of the green through the both of them.

I still three putted. :to_become_senile:

They apologized - and I assume it wasn't happening all day unless I misread your post. I'd let that fly. It only really bothers me if it is either deliberate (hard to know for sure) or if it is recurring. In the case of recurring, after the 2nd time, I'll hang back a bit and wait until they get closer to me before I tee off - and I'll make a trip out of my way to say hello. Not to be confrontational, just to ask that they wait until I clear the green on anything inside of 350 yards. I'm going on the assumption that you are keeping up pace with the group ahead of you - of course. If it happens a third time (and this has happened to me twice) I'll get a bit snippy.

It's just dangerous.

One time I someone was doing it to me all day...the third time, I may have stepped on their ball a little bit and plugged it 3/4 deep into the rough. But it wasn't my fault play was slow - we were right on the tail of the group ahead of us - but waiting for them to be safe to hit. When they did it one more time, I made one of the few mistakes I ever regret on a golf course. I grabbed my 7 iron, and took the ball they just hit up on me, and returned it back to the sender. I shouldn't have done it. And after doing it, I did apologize, but I told them that they are really risking hurting me or my 81 year old grandfather. We were keeping pace. I was deliberately playing with him from the senior tees to make sure we didn't have the appearance of slow play. We were a twosome behind a foursome....there was just no good reason to hit into us from less than 200 yards out on a par 5 - after doing it all day on other holes as well.

When hit into I did this 3 weeks ago.

I went to the hospital and took 5 stiches in head, I have a scar now not funny and very dangerous. I was lucky it hit me where it did. Lower could have lost an eye , in the face major dental work would have been needed to repair.

I remember there was a post in another section of the forums by a member who was hit in the face by an errant tee shot and he had to get facial surgery cause of a broken bone in his skull. It was horrible. That alone made me real scared of hitting into people and people hitting into me. More than likely I will be patient for the first and second time. I usually park my cart where they can see me and know that I am not far away, like 150 yards in front of them while my other friends hit their balls first just to let them know that we're within range and that I'm watching them. Accidental or not, if I hit someone I dont want to go to jail (since we live in a sue happy world) or have to pony up big money to pay for someones medical bills. And on the receiving end, I dont want to be badly hurt where my life could be affected possibly forever. Just not worth it.

I wish there was some mandatory "course/golf ettiquette" course that everyone must go through first before even stepping on the range or course.

Once is an accident. Second....I like the tee idea. While I would never hit a ball at somebody, if it's a repeat offender I am not opposed to hitting their ball into a field or pond if no one is nearby. I hate the idea of even spooking people with a drive that lands just short of people when they aren't moving.

Your post hits the nail on the head - I really don't like hitting the ball back to them because it is equally dangerous. Taking it back to them if they are repeat offenders has always worked for me.

One guy last summer was actually funny. My pard and I pull up and he says "You brought my ball back to me You are f-ing kidding me."

To this I said, "this time I am bringing it back. Next time I am hitting it back. It is slow ahead of us - don't hit into us again."

I tossed him his ball and he said "Thanks".

"Have a nice round. Be patient!"

And they were....

Saw their group later in the restaurant. He smiled at me, I smiled back and waved, and that was that.

No confrontation. No further issue. He hit into us on a par 4 the first time - thought it might have been accidental because he came from out of the woods and could not really see the green. But the second time, on a par 5, there was no doubt. We were in front of and on the green. His ball hit about 30 yards short of the green and comes bouncing up towards us. Was on the fringe when I picked it up and took it back to him. Shame too - was a nice shot. But if we hadn't done what we did I honestly believe he would have continued to hit whenever he wanted to.

First time it happens I say nice drive/shot (no harm, no foul). Second time I give them the old hands up WTF look. Third time it goes in my pocket if it's a good ball, in the woods or right back where it came from if it's garbage. I've only had 1 confrontation about it. A drunk fella in knickers and a chauffeurs cap hit 4 in a row from the tee into my fairway. All 4 of them got pitched right back at him. He came over running his mouth right as the ranger was making his rounds. I explained what happened and the ranger asked him to leave and not come back. What made it even better since he was drunk as a skunk, he took the key to the cart and made him hike back.

It's only happened a handful of times while I was playing and I've never made a big deal of it, it's never hit me, they always seem sorry that they did it when/if they catch up but there was one time where I watched the guy tee off and watched the ball land maybe 3 feet from where I was standing, he was watching the ball the whole way and didn't say a word, that one I decided that he needed a little chip into the water down the slope next to the fairway, watching him look for his ball in the rough for 5 minutes was amusing to me. When I was a caddie I would see it quite often, I've seen a 50+yr old member one punch a mid 30's trust fund baby for doing it 3 times in one round, but that was the only excitment I've ever seen from someone getting hit into, one hell of a punch to witness tho the younger guy hit the ground before the older guy was done yelling at him

True story...a few years ago our group was playing its regular Saturday round in the Nashville area. As we walked toward the par 3 17th green, we saw two police cars on the adjoining 10th fairway. There were 'chatting' with two foursomes in what appeared to be a very animated conversation. We couldn't imagine what was going on. A few minutes later we walked off the 18th green. Nearby, a golfer was handcuffed to a golf cart. That's something you don't see every day! The story was that a guy in the lead group lost it over the trailing group hitting into them. It happened again on number 10. There was a confrontation and one of the guys pulled a pistol from his bag. Another brave soul pulled a cell phone from his. No word whether anyone birdied the hole.

Unfortunately, I've been hit into far too many times since I mostly play affordable public courses. Rarely have I been hit into only once in a round. The only times people have actually yelled fore, they came up reasonably short.

I've only hit into someone once, about two weeks ago. It was an accident, but a result of their slow play. To set the stage, we had waited over every shot all day and were now on 11. On the front nine, they had been mostly keeping pace with the group in front of them, sometimes they'd be one extra shot behind, but nothing egregious. However, one guy was parking the cart about 50 yards from his ball, walking over without a club to identify it, walking back, picking a club, then walking over and hitting it, then walking back to the cart.

Needless to say, this was anger inducing. Then, on a 270 yard par-3, we waited for the green to clear for me to tee off. I hit my driver 240-260 on average, but I can get a hold of one sometimes and I try to avoid rolling one up 25 yards short of the green when people are putting. So they clear the green, I slice one about 250 to the right and my Dad hits one 180. He misses the green left, I hit it on, he chips on, we both putt out... We look up, and the group in front of us is STILL on the 12th tee, yet to hit.

I say we should hurry up, they must be letting us through, and they then proceed to tee off and head up the fairway. Now I'm really steaming. They stand over their second shots forever, not playing ready golf and this one guy who is away is still taking those leisurely 50 yard walks to and from his ball. He's now also taking a few practice swings and then staring off into the distance after each one, as if he's watching his shot. He's in the middle of a few trees and needless to say, blasts one into a tree 20 yards in front of him and it comes out sideways. Walks to the ball. Nope, needs a new club. Walks 50 yards to the cart, takes a club, walks back. God forbid you use the damn thing, it's not like you're avoiding the fairway since you're parked right in the middle of it.

They finally hit, and we tee off, as the group behind us gets up to the tee. It's a dog left and I push it to the right, about 240 to the front of the green and 260 to the back. My dad was able to hit his second shot around the corner and has about 120 left. I wait for awhile, and one of them is re-hitting putts. My 3 wood is 210-220, so I decide to no longer give them the courtesy of not rolling one 25 yards short and possibly distracting them, as we are backing another group up and if I hit I can get out of their way and pressure the group ahead of us to hopefully let us through.

I make solid contact, but it doesn't feel like I pured it, so I'm watching it expecting it to land short - there's also a valley in front of the green, so rolling up is impossible. I see it land, seemingly just short of the green and take a high bounce right in between two players in their threesome. I ask my Dad if that was on the green or short, and he doesn't know. None of them moved at all, so we figure it was short. They all finish putting, and Mr. 50 yard walk comes to the front of the green and starts angrily waving his arms around, so now I know it did bounce through them.

I walked over to the next tee and apologized, and they didn't even look at me. I apologized again and told them I hit the 3-wood farther than my driver, and they waved me off angrily and said yeah, whatever. I walked back and my ball was actually all the way through the green, about 3 yards off of the back edge.

Next time instead of breaking my 30-yard buffer policy, I'll just tell them to speed up a few holes prior and avoid taking any chances. Fortunately I didn't hit anybody, but it also sucks that I didn't get to enjoy the 3-wood shot of my life.

Equally unfortunately, they purposely slowed down the rest of the way even more. It'd be nice if people would believe you when you apologize profusely, especially when they see how far away you are, but since I'm at fault I can't say I deserved any niceties. Kudos to the guy who was putting though, he had laser-like focus not to even look up.

1. I don't hit into other groups. You need to stop with the assumptions.
2. I never said it was ok to hit into someone, nor did I say there was any justification for it. You probably need to work on your reading comprehension as well.
3. You're obviously that guy who rifles a ball back at the group behind them (because you stated as much). I just hope you don't miss and injure some innocent third party who was minding their own business and not involved with your little spat with the group behind you.

Second time I sharpie a msg on their ball and say something like a$$hole or d-bag and a smiley face on a tee. Never got to the third.

The first time I will tee up their ball. As has been said, this usually gets the point across, gets an apology if the see me, and stops it from happening again.

If it happens again it indicates to me they are in a hurry and don't care. I figure the time they will spend looking for their ball (that I just hit into the forest) will slow them down and get them off my a**.

I never hit them into the woods or make it where they can't find it. They don't get the message. Hitting it back at the knuckledragging clods only reduces you to their level, and even though they are less than human, the law may not be on your side if you retaliate. They will claim it was an "accident", and we get labeled as the aggressors.

A few years ago, a guy's second shot into a par-5 one-hopped into the back of my thigh. I stepped on the ball leaving a fried egg in the fairway. I was really ticked because we were still 40-50 yards short of the green. He may have been new to the course, but we were in plain sight and there was no excuse. Love the tee idea. I think some people are just terrible at gauging distances, sometimes it has to do with course construction as well. What looks 150 at one course, may be 250, and vice versa. Unless you've got course knowledge or a GPS/range finder even a golfer with ettique has to be careful.

My regular course has about 3 blind drives, and usually if it's crowded someone in our group will drive up to the hill. I've played courses with periscopes and bells (annoying). It's not going to elimiate the neaderthals, but courses should provide some means of alerting groups when they can or can't play on blind holes.

I fully understand both sides of the arguement but when does due diliegence come into play?

Some people will SIT in blind spots for a few minutes doing whatever, looking for balls, getting drinks from the beer cart, it doesn't matter. So if I tee off, fire one threw your group, AFTER I've waited, typically a longer then neccessary time frame, and I still hit one into you. I'm sorry, but that's your fault. Maybe not according to any US/Canadian laws unless your every tee shot is documented and recorded.

People need to be educated, that some people hit the ball further then they do, which is odd, because "everyone" hits it 300 yards. You don't hit your drive, and mess around after. You keep walking/driving....

I've driven into lots of people over the last 10 years, but I can guaranty you it's not because I'm in idiot. It's because ppl don't follow basic golf etiquette. My friend and I were playing and riding, and we practiacally played threw a group that was sitting in a blind spot looking for a ball, we didn't come close to anyone but if you know ppl are waiting, leave your bag where ppl can see it. The other issue for another thread is ppl spend too long looking for golf balls....

If you can SEE the group in front of you, it's ALWAYS best to wait. If you can't see the group, then imo it's not 100% your fault. (I'm not saying when someone walks over a blind hill it's fair game, obviously give them some time)

I tried to say this in a polite common sense manner b.c it's reality that some ppl have got hit by golf balls, and that's scary stuff. But PLEASE ppl, keep moving and make sure ppl can see you!!

P.S I love the writing on the ball idea....
