Pinon Hills New Mexico. Best Municipal Course

I had the pleasure of playing a very nice municipal course over the weekend in Northern New Mexico. Pinon Hills. It was voted one of the best Municipal course to play in 2002 by Golf Digest Magazine

It is a very popular course. Different than most NM courses. They run it very well the Marshall's keep things moving well. I play it about 2 times a year.

In my opinion it is not the best public course in NM, but very good. It was voted the best in the U.S. by write-in to the Magazine.

I live in the greater PHX area and this course has been on my radar for some time. Have tried to fit in a stop there on two different family trips without success. May just have to plan it as a dedicated golf trip.

It's an outstanding course.. price, condition, and layout being the top considerations: its definitely one of the best muni courses in the state. I don't consider our tribal course as muni w their bigger budgets and unlimited water rights its hardly fair, I also wouldn't count Paako as a muni course due to price but its top ten in the US year in year out. The closest comparison is Black mesa- another fantastic course. Both courses are fairly priced, borterline steal of a deal in fact. City courses generally run ~35 and both courses are about that, but w incredible views, maintained, and layer out much better then an average course. For half the price of a casino course you get the same experience as far as course design and upkeep. Pinion hills gets my vote, not just because I played well there, but I actually saw allittle red tailed fox on number one fairway! Had no idea they were native to northern NM, but it was a pleasent surprise. If I can't golf in Durango this weekend, Pinon hills will be worth every penny!

The last time I played it was about 20 years ago. It was a great course at a very good price. If you are in the area, it is one to play.
