Ever heard of them? Last night I made my usual trip to the driving range to hit a couple of bags of balls. One of my friends showed up after I had finished my session. He was trying out a new driver, three wood, and hybrid. He handed me the driver and asked me what I thought. My first reaction, this is a heavy club. He asked me to take a few swings and please, don't inspect the shaft. I took a few practice swings to feel the weight of the club and then proceeded to hit 2 drives. Both drives flew lower than usual for me and were dead straight. The air carry was about 240 yards which is a little shorter than my normal air carry. He started telling me about the shaft. It's 104 grams and feels very stiff. Apparently there's only 1 shaft stiffness for these shafts. They're butt and tip stiff with the flex point in the middle. The driver he handed me was an Adams with 8.5* of loft. Next he had me hit the hybrid a couple of times. Again, a heavy club that felt very stiff. I hit 2 balls with the 19* hybrid with the same results. A lower ball flight but dead straight. I did not like the feel of either club but the results were astounding. I hit the driver a few more times and every one of them flew dead straight and air carried between 235-240 yards.

 

Golf is a game of feel. Part of the pleasure of the sport is the feeling at impact. These shafts robbed me of that pleasure, but the end results of each shot was very pleasing. Before posting, I found the nVetrix NUNCHUK website, and they make claims that I can attest to in my half-dozen swings last night (lower ball flight, lower spin rate, tight dispersion patterns). The cost is rather high at $250 per 46" shaft. I don't have money to burn and was wondering if anyone else has tried these shafts? Snake oil or the real deal?

I have one in an old Cobra SZ 440 10.5* and it's the straightest I've hit the ball off the tee. Bad swings will still give you bad shots, but dispersion does seem lower. I get pretty consistent trajectory as well. It's not as long as some other combos I've tried, but I'm usually in or near the fairway and not off in the trees. I tried it in fairway woods, but it didn't seem to work for me -- trajectory seemed all over the place, some high, some low -- all pretty straight though. If you're strong enough to swing a slightly heavier club, you might like it. You can probably come across one on EBay in a driver for under $200 -- they come up from time to time -- that's where I got the Cobra. I was going to pull the shaft and stick it in something else but figured I'd try it, and I'm still using it. There's a really long thread over in the SecretInTheDirt with the inventor piping in a lot -- it's worth a read before you jump in and buy one. On that thread, a lot of people seem to prefer it in their fairways, so it's really an individual thing. I haven't tried the hybrid .370 one yet -- not sure if I want to spend that kind of money on a hybrid shaft.
