Fedex cup is stupid

Yes, they earn their way into the final events, thereby earning a piece of the bonus money.

If we're indicting the FedEx Cup's advertising strategy, then we need to indict the system as a whole. Which I certainly am not closed to. Are purses inflated? probably. Is The TOUR pandering to the sponsorship dollar all across the board? yep, of course. But let's not pretend that The FedEx Cup is the root here.

These points are becoming increasingly important whether some fans like them or not. Sponsors have threatened to pull the plug on events if they don't get full points status. They know that players have begun to take it a bit more seriously...
Com'on ... "indict".

tr.v. in·dict·ed, in·dict·ing, in·dicts
1. To accuse of wrongdoing; charge: a book that indicts modern values.
2. Law To make a formal accusation or indictment against (a party) by the findings of a jury, especially a grand jury.

I did NOT say anything that remotely suggests its "wrong" or a root?? of sorts. I said, I disagreed with Fedex Cup purpose, and where it stands in the tour players week-to-week priorities, and the amount of money. Lets discuss the same issues?

It was an idiomatic expresson of the word. I thought we were discussing, in part, the huge purses, the precieved cash cow and wasteful nature of it (FedEx Cup). Some have mentioned the exorbidant amount of money on the line as being a negative.

My apologies if that was not your take, but it seemed in looking through the thread that you have made comments alluding to that as being your take.

Sorry Vin... without knowing people, it's hard to determine someones intent in a few lines. There are some whack nuts on the internet. Yes, I did elude to excessive nature of 10M payout, not the payouts during regular tournament play however. I said something along the lines of handing someone that earns 1-5M year year, 10M for a shadow event is excessive. I understand Fedex's purpose and PGA's need for Fedex, still its excessive. Case in point, we don't see any professional tennis great receiving anything remotely close for winning all the slams in one year. Professional golf is out of sync, even if golf donates more to communities then any other sport.

GC just showed a stat that 71 people can take over #1 this week, who else finds this stupid?
All season long tournaments were worth 500 and now they are worth 2500.
GC and Fedex says this is a "season long race" yet like Bill Haas last year you win one "playoff" event and you win the "season points race".
I don't like Tiger but he has won 3 times this year and could be beat by some bum that was 60th all year long and won a single "playoff" event.
Thing is a joke.

It would be better is these final four events were 1000 but 2500 is WAYYY too much.
If you set majors and playoffs = 2500, Players & WGC = 1750 and TOC = 1250, regular tour = 500 and alternates = 250, the top 30 after the Wyndham looks like this:
1 Rory McIlroy 6322.5 2 Matt Kuchar 5623.775 3 Bubba Watson 5370.88 4 Justin Rose 5359.25 5 Graeme McDowell 5279.75 6 Tiger Woods 5095.65 7 Keegan Bradley 4865.83 8 Steve Stricker 4845.785 9 Jason Dufner 4575.25 10 Adam Scott 4533.66 11 Webb Simpson 4323.9 12 Ernie Els 4292.93 13 Louis Oosthuizen 4222.61 14 Jim Furyk 4182.93 15 Ian Poulter 4097.57 16 Luke Donald 4038.75 17 Hunter Mahan 3782 18 Carl Pettersson 3690 19 Brandt Snedeker 3389.625 20 Zach Johnson 3351.205 21 Phil Mickelson 3266 22 Lee Westwood 3181.75 23 Padraig Harrington 3031.01 24 Martin Laird 2784.16 25 David Toms 2679.85 26 Bo Van Pelt 2530.85 27 Michael Thompson 2521.75 28 John Senden 2397.625 29 Rickie Fowler 2242.075 30 Bill Haas 2145.25
I understand why the reset exists, but I think it reduces the Fedex Cup itself to a gimmick. Rory has played the best, by far. His reward for blowing away the field through the playoffs? A lot of scenarios in which some other guy can get hot in a single tiny-field event and walk away with the 10 million. Apparently Tiger can still win the Fedex Cup without even winning the TC. That's dumb.

In hindsight, I think I like the old system better. I know there was a lot of criticism when Tiger and Vijay clinched early, but I prefer a credible champ to "excitement".
It should be between the 2nd and 3rd week, that way you have to play well (or poorly in the case of blowing it) over a 2 event stretch. If Tiger wins the cup without having won an event under this scenario, then at least we would see that he had been the most consistent in the last two weeks (final if you will).
That would be better than what we've got now, but I think there might be even better options out there. One interesting option I've heard discussed is to treat the entire playoffs as a massive 16 round tournament:
- leave the regular season pretty much as is
- at the start of the playoffs, players get an initial score based on their regular season standing: e.g. Tiger was first, so he starts at -20; the second and third place finishers start at -19; and so on down to the 125th guy who starts at even par
- after each tournament, each player's tournament score is added to his cumulative score, and the bottom X guys are cut
- maybe to add a little volatility/excitement, each week's winner gets a "bonus", with 5 strokes deducted from his cumulative score

Something similar to this seems like a more reasonable way of establishing a champion, plus it is really easy to understand.

So Rory starts in 1st and has 2500 points. Sits in fifth and gets 525 points. total 3025
Snedker leads and has a projected 2500 points and was sitting fifth with 1600 points total 4100.

Does not compute. Why are the points not the same per position as given before the play-off?

They don't have to be per se...They arrange the points in that way so that nobody inside the top 30 is mathematically eliminated going into the last event.

I like the FedEx cup. Most of the big names are here at the last event and you can really see them feeling the pressure on Sunday trying to win it.

They could tweak the points, but the first thing they should do is make it the top 75 or so get into the playoffs, then eliminate a smaller number each week until you get to 30 for the Tour Championship.

So Snedeker can go to playoff with Rory for the FedEx. 1 win is considered same as 2 wins. Awesome, they should play the Tour Championship in Vegas!
j

I think the tour wants us to compare the playofsf more to other sports. You can win every game in the NFL, and all the play off games but if you loose the Super Bowl by 1 point, you still loose the super bowl.

If we really want this to be "playoffs" , the final installment has to carry ALL of the weight.

What if they only had the top 10 players from the previous playoff rounds in the tour championship?

Simple fact is, Playoffs in golf seem stupid because there are no teams.

It's the same reason that the WGC Match Play is rarely a big tv draw. Knock out the best/favorite players in match play or have them play bad the last event of the playoffs and the whole thing pretty much doesn't matter.

It's just like the playoffs in any other sport. You don't have to be the best all year or even the whole playoffs to win it all. Just have to play well when it truly counts.
Problem is, someone like Rory could play well and still not win. As Tiger said, you could win every single event all year and come 2nd at the Tour championship and not win the whole thing. It's not like other sports where you're playing a single person/team, winning is extremely rare in golf, unlike in something like football.

I understand where you are coming from Vin. But you could literally win every tournament through the season, come second in the playoff and lose the Fedex to someone sitting fifth before it.

How about incorporating a "scramble" format? Seems like a good fit.

Maybe have one event that each player plays "worst ball" (two balls every shot take the worst shot and play from there).

How about next year they take the top 4 points guys and have a rip-roaring match of "bingo-bango-bongo" winner take all. COOL!!!

I understand what Finchim was trying to do ... prior to the FedEx Cup, after the final major (generally early-mid August), the golf season was functionally over. A lot of the best would either completely stop playing, or only play in a couple of more events. From late August to January/Febraury there were tourneys (and the silly season) ... but few of the big names played, and it was only fanatics that watched.

He did manage to extend the season - and the huge purse means that he's made it worth it for the big names to be playing 3/4s of the way through September.

I do disagree with the way they did it ... a system so ridiculously convoluted that it makes no sense whatsoever. I don't watch it because I give even a remote crap about who "wins" the Cup ... but I do watch it because most of the best in the world are now on the course together through most of September. And for a golf fan, that's a pretty cool thing.

Yeah - love watching a guy playing golf collecting seconds on a "consistent" basis and then by the end of the year ship him 10 Millions for it.
I think nowadays they also call this Tiger golf. But yet if this trend continous i doubt there is much to bicker about, as the likelyhood of him being second again will just be very high by tomorrow.

And the Fedex Cup still sucks. They should just hand the 10 Million whoever holds Nr. 1 in the World by November 1st (and pay the rest of the Top30 in the World accordingly) then tweak the World Golf rankings a bit that they respond faster, and all of a sudden you´ll have a lot of golf played by the best in the world trying to accumulate these points til some date.

forgetting about the major win then I see...and also forgetting the fact that he will have to WIN TOMORROW. So they're not just going to ship anyone anything. Consistency is one part of the game...Bill Haas had a win this year but stunk the rest of the way in. So right now he's not playing.

Not sure what your point is, unless it's just to melt, in which case it's delicious
