Fedex cup is stupid

I somehow get the feeling Vindog was "one of those" Tiger fans who up until recently who never allowed for any criticism, and now that the pressure of being a Tiger fan just became unbearable he needed to find something else. Either this or he´ll sit behind a Fedex desk tomorrow :derisive:.

Not sure if Fedex signs his paycheques, but I've been around long enough to know that he isn't "one of those" Tiger fans.

Problem with the current format is even if Rory had finished 2nd in the Tour Championship to Brandt Rory would still not have won the overall Fedex cup depsite finishes of 24th, 1st, 1st, and a hypothetical 2nd V's 2nd, 6th, 37th, and 1st for Brandt. It seems the Tour Championship is way too heavily weighted.

At least a guy who played pretty well for the year and was in the top 5 of points won. Snedeker played great so he deserves it, Rory and tiger (not surprising) couldnt stand the pressure.
Better than the bum who got lucky last year.
Don't forget the bums who couldn't muster anything in the top 20 to prevent him from winning.

That was the real tragedy. Not one of those guys could finish better than the bottom third.

Agreed.

I was hoping Rory would come in second just to show how lame this point system is.

There is no way Sneds should come out ahead of Rory. No way.

Only if you assume the point of the Fedex Cup is to identify the guy who played the best through the playoff events. Once you realize its basically the same as the Chevron Challenge and the Nedbank, it all makes sense....

That is fine, but just don't market it as a "Season-long chase for the Cup".

Bingo!!!!!

Let's just add the FedEx Playoff events to the fall Silly Season.

FEC is:

1) Designed for ratings.
2) Designed to attract top Rest of World pros to the PGA tour after the USPGA instead of some of the quite lucrative "European" Tour gigs in the far east.
3) Designed to distract European players from properly preparing for the Ryder Cup every second year.

Ok, number 3 is just me being cheeky, but I'm not sure it's all that far out.

It is what it is. As someone upthread mentioned, at this elite level (regular world and money list top 50) $10mil is lovely, but not the be-all and end all for them. These are big tournaments in their own right, they have been somewhat diluted by their inclusion as part of the FEC, which is probably the greatest crime of the whole setup.

Simply put, for all I like Brandt Snedeker and the way he goes about his business, everyone knows who should have won this and who should have been second. The convoluted and arcane scoring system doesn't change that.

They should make it a straight shootout all year, Playoff events worth no more than regular tour events and your points just keep accumulating, just have the cuts offs in place as they are and you should have the cream at the top in the end anyway.

I watched to Tour Championship from start to finish Yesterday. The part that annoyed me most was all the blabber about if so and so does this then that, then maybe this or possibly that, then so and so might, if... Yep, I enjoyed watching and hoping Snedeker would keep his pants up... and he did. He was #5 on the if then list too. Aside from 10M being too much, The Fedex cup formula requires too much on going math. Haven't used a Calculus calculator since college.... boring. Its for that reason and some others, every time they came on TV to explain if, then, maybe's, I muted the TV.

Happy Snedeker had his Dad there to watch, and hope his friend in the hospital gets better.

So wait a minute...people are complaining that there is "too much math" then the SAME PEOPLE are complaining that the announcers, who are doing the math for them, are laying out the scenarios on TV? Do I have that right?

Yep. You nailed it. I have no interest in listening to bozo announcers doing math on a black board to explain the convoluted Fedex Cup standing changing from hole to hole. I want to watch golf... Besides, they can't get yardages and club selections right. Why should anyone trust their calculations are right. I won't go into how many of them dropped out of school.

This is exactly why the argument that the playoffs is like any other sport in that the best team always doesn't win. Too many people make a comparison to the NFL and how the perceived best team doesn't end up winning the superbowl and thats no different that the Fedex.

the problem with this is that being an individual tournament these guys don't affect others outcomes as NFL teams play one other team and play defense. If Rory would've went 1st 1st 2nd and didn't win the FedEx the whole system would have been an embarrassment.

Overall it works because makes for more golf with better players, just wish the PGA wouldn't ignore making changes that could make the system better. For me as a golf fan, its just another tournament. Not really a final to a season champion like they market. I wish the top 4 guys after yesterday were playing today stroke play for 10 million.

Expectations or predictions are silly because professional athletes (including teams) have individual mental states to deal with every day of competition... Team "X" is the predicted winner, so odds are drawn. The odds fail to factor in the team is made up of individuals (not robots) that have to do deal with their mental state. Roger Federer beats Dorky one week, but loosing to him most other times. Rafa beats anyone on clay, but he's not as confident on other surfaces, etc.

I thought the Fedex gave us some extra weeks of quality golf, which is good, but I don't think people care all that much about who wins the actual cup. Aside from the outsized payday it doesn't really carry any special prestige.
This a very pragmatic way of looking at it. It's a means to an end..which is quality golf later in the year.

There are some exemption perks that go with winning the Cup, but generally they're not really practical. The winner get a 5 year exemption, but most of the time said player is already exempt...
The players that make the top 30, get invite to 3 of the 4 Majors next year...which, depending on the player..can be HUGE.

Anyone else hear Brandel Chamblee suggest they play this thing from Wed through Saturday and then the Final 4 play on Sunday? I think I like that idea.
