The Woodlands Country Club

lowndes

Recommended Posts

My wife and I have recently decided to move to the Woodlands and I am almost certain that I'll join the Woodlands Country Club but was curious if anybody has much experience with it. The courses seem fantastic but was wondering if anybody has any experience with the overall atmosphere of the club, etc.

Thanks,

Is this the same as CanonGate? Have you checked out Augusta Pines and Woodforest as well?
No, its not the same as CanonGate (although it does get you access to those courses). The courses are the Tournament course (the old TPC where the SHO use to be played before Redstone), the Palmer course and the Player course. I've never played Augusta Pines and love Woodforest but it is a public course and I am looking to join a private facility. Big factor is pace of play for me.

The Woodlands and Cannongate are not the same. I don't have a lot of experience but I have played the Tournament Course, and Gary Player. Woodlands is geared more twords the more serious family types. Cannongate is a dirty whore that is all about packing in as many members as humanly possible. Great courses and service at Woodlands. You can't really go wrong in that sense. I'm not sure how many members they have or how busy it gets. You might want to go talk to them after you move and check it out. I know they sent me an email recently trying to get me to join.

All the courses at the Woodlands Country Club are always in great shape. The Tournament Course was closed for 4 months to redo the greens. They just opened in the beginning of this month. You get 63 holes (the Palmer Course has 27 holes) of golf so it's a pretty good deal.

The Gary Player course is the toughest challenge of the three and seems to have the least amount of play due to the difficulty of the course. Fantastic layout for "Low Handicapper" but is playable even if you have a mid handicap. Greens are outstanding and quick.

The Palmer Course which has three nines, is usually the busiest course as it is much more user friendly, and has by far the most "Senior" play of the three. Still a good challenge and in the summer the fairways are some of the best you will play on. Green speed is much more manageable but still good.

The Tournament Course also gets a fair amount of play as everyone wants to play the same course as the "Pros" play and can test your skill as a Golfer. They have just installed new greens and as they mature I am sure that they will be challenging.

Enjoy your Membership there and do take advantage of the fact that you also have access to Lake Windcrest, The Oaks, and Panther Trail as well.
By the way I would say that of the Cannongate Courses you get access to in the immediate Woodlands area that Panther Trail is the most challenging of the three, but dont ignore the other two courses either as they are all fun to play, and almost all the people that work there are really nice folks.

I moved to The Woodlands this past July from Sacramento, CA. I haven't had a chance to play any of those WCC courses yet and I live right by the one in Sterling Ridge. I get to play them in March for a tournament. But each time I drive by the WCC course near me, I hardly ever see people on the course no matter what time of day. Sunday morning it is like a ghost town around there.

Our execs have memberships to Carlton Woods and I keep trying to get on there. Hopefully soon.

In case anyone is interested, Woodlands CC is begging people to join and always trying to throw me offers. They sent me another today. They are having a FREE two man scramble on Dec 10th on the Tournament course to showcase the new greens and redone cart paths to potential members. 11:00 lunch, noon shotgun start. I'm not sure if you have to be on their spam list like me to play. I doubt it. Contact Amber Sickafoose (she's the member director) @ asickafoose@thewoodlandscc.com or 832-405-6864and RSVP by Dec 5th.

I'm sure you could just call and get to play. It's not like they are going to turn you down if you're not on the spam list. The whole purpose is to reel in new/potential members.

That's the most expensive and probably the most exclusive club in Houston. Unless you get a personal invite from a member to play a round with them, you're not getting on. No free passes.

I will be able to get on because of our executives. Our executives are always looking to take people from work out to the course. I was actually supposed to play there 4 days after the day I ruptured my Achilles. I believe they are setting something up for a few of us to go in the next couple of weeks.

How you know? I see him all the time. And he's not at Woodlands CC.

There are several articles online that say he is a member at WCC at used to consider it his home course.

I currently play primarily at High Meadow Ranch and Woodforest. I like playing at both very much. I play at least once a week, about 6-8 times a month. I have been giving this membership a lot of thought, and any input would be appreciated. I have not played these courses but have heard nothing but great things about them. I also have not had a membership at a country club before. I have some of the same questions as lowndes...Most importantly, what is the pace of play on the weekend like/how crowded does it get? My schedule does not allow for 5+ hour rounds of golf. This is one of my primary reasons for looking at a private club. What is the general atmosphere at the club like? Are people generally up tight and serious, or is it more laid back and relaxed? For example, if I brought my 12 year old niece with me (which I do about once a month) how would it be taken if she wanted to try to "hit one?" Thanks in advance.

It just depends on the day on how busy it is. I have found that most people like the Palmer Course the most then the Tournament and then the Player. Weekend mornings are going to be crowed anywhere but you can expect that at any course. Afternoons are usually pretty good and easy to get on. Heck last Thursday i played 18 in around 2:15 and never saw a person. The golf is great but the dinning has a little left to be desired. They dont stay open that late and the food is hit or miss.

You're not going to be disappointed with golf in The Woodlands area or the area itself. I have worked in The Woodlands for 15 years and lived in Panther Creek about 8 years ago. I now live just across I45 in what is technically Spring but its basically all the same. This area is fantastic and so is the golf. I have played the Player course and Panther Trail. The Palmer is private and Panther is public and both are very nice. Carlton Woods, from what I hear, is amazing but I havent been able to get near the place. Ive also played Augusta Pines and Woodforest and they are both good. When you get here you will find that there are probably 15 good courses to play within 30min of here.

If you live outside 25 miles from the club its only $30k, and $440 a month. Both courses are fantastic. One of the best facilities in the Nation, not only Houston. They will also let you pay the $30k over 18 months. Quite a few new members joining.

Based on Dallas clubs, I would say that $110k is definitely not the most expensive club in Houston. There's no way River Oaks, HCC, and Lochinvar are less than that. Probably $150k.
HCC is considerably less than $110K (it's $75K for full and $25K for a junior). River Oaks I believe is $100K for a full and $15K for a junior. No clue what Lochnivar is but I'd venture to say it is more than both HCC and River Oaks.

Carlton Woods has two awesome courses (my second and third favorite in Houston) but its not that exclusive (just expensive). I've played there several times while I was looking for a club to join. Only thing you have to do to join is write them a check. Also, they seem to be running a lot of promotional specials right now (and have been for the past year or so). Monthly dues are really high though at around $900 a month.

River Oaks is $50k, HCC is $50k, and Lochinvar is $60k. The only club I know in Dallas that is more than $100k is DNC.

ROC has a 3-4 yr waiting list and HCC is similar. Both are subpar golf courses, but located in the right part of town. Lochinvar is a great lay out, but it's like owning a Jaguar. You better have another car because its always in the shop. I've never played Lochinvar when it was in great shape, and I've played it a lot. Quite a few of their members are members at Redstone as well because of this.

Really? That's interesting because I can think of five clubs in Dallas that are >$100K besides Dallas National. Especially with all the oil money, I can't imagine full golf membership at ROCC or HCC is only $50K.
ROCC and HCC for a fact are NO WHERE near $100k. Best college buddy just joined after being on the waiting list for 4 years at ROCC $25k junior, due another $25k in a few years.

Which clubs in Dallas do you think are more than $100k? I'm pretty familiar with most of them. DNC being the top dog.

Colonial $50k
DAC $15k
Preston Trails $65k
DCC $40k

I have good buddies at all these clubs, I may be off by $5k here or there but it's always a topic of discussion when we play.
