Most of the time I like (relatively) calm golf. But in a few places (Arizona, for instance, and definately the Ryder Cup) ... I think all bets are off. I actually love it when now and then there's no holds barred.

No ... I do not care what people yell at the RC. Only standard that I have is that they yell after the ball is hit. (And the truth is, for all people want to yell about American fans, they rarely - if ever - yell on a backswing ... there IS a basic sense of etiquette). But after the ball is hit? Yeah ... get in the players' heads. There's a reason why the crowd at the Ryder Cup is called the 13th Player ... I know Americans are called rude and crude ... but I, persaonally love it that people like Monty and Sergio flat out couldn't handle it.

The Ryder Cup is one of the closest thing I ever see to my average Saturday round with buddies I bet with. Perpetually psychological ... yelling, screaming, and all manner of games ... "Hey! I know you usually miss it right on this hole, but today that might be good 'cause of the of pin placement!" hahahaha).

I'm not "embarressed" about American fans enjoying American golf in America in the way they want to. Especially not in the RC.

And PS. To the EU fans? YOU would be considered quite impolite and crude in Japan or China. Different cultures on this planet have very different ways of enjoying sport, and different standards of behaviour.
Ahh so Monty and Sergio just couldn't handle the heat of the American Ryder Cup kitchen eh? That's why they always sucked in the Ryder Cup right? Yeah that must be it. Hit the nail right on the head. Well done.

Not surprised to hear you tell us that Chinese and Japanese crowds are less animated than European crowds, after all they're souless aren't they? Or was that just the Koreans?
Wow ... you sure told me!!!!!!

Gawd ... I freaking LOVE this.

It is gonna be a great Ryder Cup.

And OMG!!!! Someone might yell get in the hole"!!!!!

Americans are, like SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad!!!!!

Seriously, we should not even be allowed to pick up a golf club, nor run an event.

Then you and I need to agree to disagree. Don't worry about being embarrassed. I am embarrassed enough for the both of us.
Embarassed about what?

The tournament has not even started yet.

I am sure the visiting team is getting the Red Carpet and Amarican fans are the best.

The Euros love it, they have fire in the belly, they want some drama to rally around.

An enemy makes for the best coach speeches, especially at half-time.

Stop worrying so much, all will be well.
Well put! I never feel embarressed for American golf, or American fans. No, we're not Brits, or Japansese, or Aussies, or South Africans, or South Koreans (all of which have their own standards of what is "right").

The EU guys that get into it (and there are more and more of them) love it. The young guys get America (hell' they play here as much as they do on the EU tour). On the whole, they stay in better hotels, get better cars and drivers ... and get the attitude of the US.

And here's the thing about the US ... if you embrace this country, you get embraced (regardless of where you are from). If you want to act like a stuffy, self-righteous arse looking down on America ... that's how you'll get treated.

Colin got totally dissed (and deserved it). But Rory? There will be US fans yelling "get in the hole!" for HIM. He's loved in America, because you get the feeling that he genuinely loves America.
Are you for real? You do realise they don't stay in run down interstate-motel-alike places. You do realise where they're playing? So BMW and mercedes not good enough for you Bob? no doubt the PGA have a Maybach with an Indy car /Nascar driver at the wheel for every player?

moronic!

I've said this in other places, but the way fan behavior is these days in so many major and professional sports, the best thing for the players and people who care about the sport would be to have no spectators at all. Since major events make all their money off TV, the gate at many venues really doesn't make that much for the sponsors, and would save everyone the embarrassment of the ever-growing number of idiots who have no idea how to behave in public.

It's not just golf where the problems are; as a Cleveland Browns fan the behavior in the old Dawg Pound in the old Cleveland Stadium got so bad when they built the new one they send a letter to all season ticket holders saying if you throw a dog bone or dog snack on the field they would take your season tickets, and send you a copy of the video camera capture of you doing it. Other stadiums are so bad many people refuse to take children and families to games. In Philadelphia there is local court that meets inside Lincoln Financial Field to fine and jail the unruly spectators during games, there are so many of them getting to fights, getting drunk, etc. And we all remember the poor Dodger fan who got beaten within a punch or two of death by two Giants fans this season. Now he's severely injured permanently because he wore the wrong colors to a game.

Even in civilized places like Murfield Village and Firestone where there are events of the highest level with long history behind them, it is the minority/plurality of idiot fans that ruin it for players and everyone else. As a side benefit of no spectators and all the hassles they cause, pros would be forced to play the course as it is, instead of the bad shots finding good lies in the spectator areas or pros bailing out on 17 or 18 as last week's champion did to get a free drop because of the stands.

Fan behavior in sports is so bad on all levels from little kids on up they should ban spectators from events. It is so bad now that at Chess Tournaments for children parents are not allowed in the playing rooms because of the way some of them interfere with the players. It's sick, and it will never get better until tournaments and sporting events stop hosting spectators. I've spent my life involved with athletics, and I'm so tired of how fans treat players, coaches, and officials it's almost not worth it anymore. A kids Play Station III can play golf games quite well with out all the garbage that comes with the real thing.

There are morons everywhere, if they affect your livelihood than you should learn to manage them. Monty never helped himself in that regard. Bscinstnct is referring to some pretty stupid things that Monty said in the paper today, usually I'd try and defend him but can't justify it today.

Anyway before Bob comes back with more of his high powered insight I'll just say that I'm all for a bit needle and a raucous/verging on intimidatory atmosphere at the Ryder Cup. As long as it's not personally abusive or in the middle of a guy's backswing. I say BRING IT ON!

Ajit, you're not supposed to say "retarded", man. That said, I am retarded.

But, still, still! Monty said 9/11, do the google!

Bunter, I deal exclusively with morons at work. Thank the Lord for inventing the land of Bordeaux (see ,not a xenophobe).

But, Monty does his team no favors by stirring the pot so hard. There will be some clowns but we welcome the European team and thank them in advance for their great sport.

And I think they (you) know this very well.

I haven't read any papers for the last few days so haven't heard Monty's statements.

Is it the quotes in this article?

Monty has for someone as intelligent, a great ability to put his foot in it. I'm pretty sure his comments aren't meant to stir up any trouble though and just his opinions(right or wrongly) about what America went through post 9/11.

So you are unable to just say, Wow he shouldn't invoke 9/11 when talking about a golf tournament?

"rightly or wrongly" So i guess you think he might be onto something there. That Americans, at heart, are nothing but lunatics hurling insults at anyone not wearing the stars and stripes? And further that 9/11 gave us what, a much needed respite from such social barbarism? You are pretty sure his comments weren't meant to stir anything? Do you use casual, off handed 9/11 comments as a conversation starter with Americans? Or as a temperament gauge for Americans? I doubt that you do. So don't give him a pass.

Next time you see him at the buffet, stuffing his jowls full of Spotted Dick, tell Monty to keep his irrelevant, wildly inappropriate, pompous, blowhard, opinions to his ample self.

But I've read more senseless comments here from Americans that seem to suffer from Premature Embarrassment Syndrome. Or others who think fans shouldn't get loud. NEWS FLASH The Home Team likes a Raucous crowd in every sport. It's what gives them The Advantage.

No opportunity to make some hilarious new gags at the expense of Monty's weight should be missed. Especially when a relevant point regarding the USA's culture is made with absolutely no disrespect inferred.

It all got more and more heated in the 90s but after 9/11 most realised just how silly it all was in relation to such a tragedy and the vibe was far better, just as much support and added mutual respect. Each year it's moving further and further away from that, which is a shame.

Since Monty's time has well and truly passed I hope he passes his support bra onto Phil as I'm fed up of looking at his man t**** through his shirt.

I hope this RC is as bitter and acrimonious as possible.

We don't need gentleman like the late Payne Stewart being gracious and spoiling the fun.

I have no doubt sections of the support on both sides will be giving a good bit of abuse to the players which is great banter and will spur the players on and keep the atmosphere like a pressure cooker.

Hopefully a few American fans will also get nailed (hopefully in the face) by some drives which should make for a good laugh.

The way I see it as a TV viewer from Europe, if the crowd didn't behave like Peter Griffin most of the time it would be a huge disappointment. If there's a bit of throat punching all the better.

There's a standard we've come to expect from US Ryder Cup crowds and we want to see it matched and bettered. Burning an effigy of Colin Montgomery would be a real treat!

I apprecitate your post and can understand that you honestly believe this.

But, according to Monty,

AFTER 9/11

“America realized we were their allies, their great allies. But that was 12 years ago, and time moves on.”

Was he completely drunk when he said this?
