App for lie angle

No offense, but I would never trust a lie measurement using an angle app on my iPhone. Even with a proper measuring device created for golf clubs, readings can vary. So using an app you would have to go way out of your way to clamp the club in such a way that the scoring lines are perfectly horizontal and then take your reading.

Worth a try....what app are you using?

Whether it works or not....will have to cross check with an actual loft lie machine.

Self leveling laser....

Like this from craftsman....I used this to do alignments on race car.....set scale leveling pads....take angle measurements.....home stuff like hang pictures on wall...etc.

http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-2-beam-self-leveling-laser-level/p-00948250000P?&prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=L1

Could do it a couple of ways...

To answer your question.....to get shaft perfectly vertical

...vice...laser....angle measurement tool

Put club in vice..use rubber holder deal

Laser. Points to face with line in up/down mode

Line up shaft to vertical laser line....laser auto levels...so it's true vertical

Use the app

Do the whole set....take to loft lie machine...double check if it works....

Kind of tedious, but it can be done. Cool experiment.....might as well just take into shop or purchase your own loft lie machine....time is money after all....

Apps like that for iPhone are scetchy at best. Buy a Quint bevel box at amazon for $20. find a way to mount your clubs level and the same every time and you're in business. Here's a link.

Going to wake this up 13 years later, why not!

came across this thread while really browsing for wall mounted Lof/Lie machines but I figured, what the hell, let’s snap a picture of a random club and see what the o3-model in ChatGPT has to say.

It chewed on this for quite a long while actually. While the text is in swedish it says it estimates the lie at 63°.

stated on a website that sells these cheap wedges is a lie of 64°.
i haven’t really used this club all that much as it’s a 64° wedge I purchased mainly for the hell of it. But I’ve seen some of my new Cleveland RTX’s and some Vokeys come off the rack with bigger diffs from what the manufacturer states.

Kind of interesting really.

Can’t understand why this wouldn’t work just fine. As long as there is not crazy lens distortion it should be really simple for a computer to calculate the angle of the groove and shaft.

I need to go compare my PGATSS numbers to chat gpt #.

We can do the same using Excel, but its really useless since the values we got is not "true value" and will not be compatible with return datas from a loft and lie machine.

Here is what we can do with Excel....Add the photo as a start, go to the "set in" menu, choose ILLUSTRATIONS > FIGURES ...choose a square frame and remove filling, and make the lines 0.75

First is to check if the head was "alligned correct", and i could see before i did it, its not, its "toe town with about 1/3 of a groove, so its slightly closed )not square face angle)

image.png.8f6cc6c37c0a549c40040efb82e1210e.png
By tilting the frame to 359* (1 degree off) it became square to the grooves,

image.png.8bc9e8e3dcc71e76364fa095ef4c7008.png

Now we move the same frame, and make it fit the OD of the hosel like this
image.png.4355e067fb83b4a3b084dcdb779ed48f.png

Excel say that frame is tilted to 297 before it fits.
360-297 = 63*

But the photo must be taken with square face angle, if not the hosel angle will not be correct, so actual lie (as good we can measure using this) is somewhere around 62 since the photo we measure has about 1.0 toe down angle, making the hosel at the photo 1,0 more upright than it is.

Here i have titled the photo to 359, to get allignment with the grooves.
Then the "hosel frame" return 298 when it fits the hosel
360 - 298 = 62*

Very cool!

I thought I had Excel down pretty well but this is definitely a feature I’ve never used before! 🙂

I put the club in the bending machine today and that one read the lie at 64°.
Bo guarantee that’s correct either but it’s the best I can do.

When we use a loft and lie machine, we dont get true specs, but its not needed either, since we work with relative values. As example, if we bend that lie to 63 using the same machine, 64 was not a true value, neither is 63, but we did change it 1.0 against flat, and thats what its all about.

Back to EXCEL...
- here is a good example of illustrations ive made using the tools in Excel, its not many limitations when you know how too combine mathematical charts with photots. This is a illustration of return values we can expect depening om what impact position in the face grid we got, for a player at 100 mph. Again RELATIVE numbers, based on how drivers actualy works.(Ideal impact position is C3-D4) The charts tells how much carry (first chart) or Total (second chart) you will LOOSE if your impact is any where else than C3-D4
