Cojones YES...a job after this NO...

Good for him for enforcing the rules, though when it comes to big time celebs sometimes you have to turn a blind eye. I hope he doesn't lose his job for just doing what he believes was right.

What kind of business is he bringing? I would guess that his group is comped.

Now waiting til the 11th hole is another issue.

I would say that having MJ at your course to play is a big enough bonus to just let this one go. Are his cargo shorts really offensive to the other members (and who is actually going to see him wearing cargo shorts? It's not like there is a gallery or anything)? As we have seen before, celebrities do not have to abide by the same rules and laws us mere mortals do. I would say that cargo shorts at a country club is one of the least egrigious "bending" of a rule from celebs lately.

Some dummy decides to be the rule enforcer on the 11th hole? What a stupid thing to do. Things like this always need to be handled ASAP. In the pro shop before the round, or if they didn't see it, by the starter on the 1st tee. Once he's on the course then you handle it after the round and you do it discreetly. Something like this (if it's after the round):

"Mr. Jordan, I just want to inform you for future reference that the club has a policy that does not permit the wearing of cargo shorts. We would appreciate very much if you would not wear them upon your next visit to the club. We hope that you had a good round and enjoyed your visit!"

If before the round:

"Mr. Jordan, I just want to inform you that the club has a policy that does not permit the wearing of cargo shorts. We have a very nice selection of appropriate shorts for sale here in the pro shop if you'd like to purchase one and change into them before your round."

See how easy that is?

You don't make "exceptions" to club rules for anybody unless it has to do with some kind of handicap. Poorly trained employees, IMO.

Why was he wearing cargo shorts? He has been around the game for a long time now and knows proper etiquette regardless of the course he is playing. While he should have been confronted from the start of his round, he also should have (and in my opinion did but didn't care) known not to wear cargo shorts in the first place.

On a side note, he was also called out for "dressing down" while at the Ryder Cup.

I'll have to see if I can find the link but another story was reporting that members were complaining and that's why someone went out to confront him.

Whether it's President Obama or Joe Shmo, take him aside and have the discussion in private; if the guy refuses or clearly states they won't comply then send them on their way and/or don't invite them back. Irregardless if Jordan was knowingly violating the dress code or didn't knowingly violate, IMO you have the conversation in private and if you don't catch it before the round, have the common sense to confront the guy after the round and again do it in private. If he thumbs is nose at the policy, then send him on his way and don't invite him back. Doing it mid round is questionable, sure you can do it, but take some time and think about what you're gonig to do first. IMO it's about respect, even if someone is violating a rule.

I guess that makes sense. I agree with the poster above that had some ideas of how to address the stiuation either before or after the round.

And to be clear. I'm not saying that making exceptions for celebrities is the right thing to do. I'm just saying that it happens.

It might be pretty good business. I read that years ago, Jordan used to purchase 8 full foursome tee times in a row so he could play at his pace and not be bothered by autograph hounds from groups ahead and behind. I have no idea whether or not it was true.

I think this is a great story. And I love the fact that the members there were not willing to just let him do whatever he wants. And his refusal to comply shows what kind of person he really is, and I am sure it put the member in a bad spot, He should have more consideration for the guy willing to get him a time.

I had the honor of telling him he couldn't play at a club one time. :stink::stink::stink:

If this was some upscale muni, maybe. But La Gorce? They certainly don't need the exposure.

I'm of the opinion that something else happened and this is just the excuse. The professional staff there is highly experienced, and it seems highly unlikely they would make the (very clear) mistake of handling this mid-round.

In MJ's defense, I'm sure it's hard to find plain shorts for someone 6'6" and cargoes typically run longer. He's playing in So Fla so pants are out. Although I find cargos attracious, they probably looked better on him than the short shorts other members were probably wearing there.

According to that club, cargo shorts are defined as having pockets on the outside of the pants.

I tend to look at cargo shorts as baggy and unsightly and agree with not allowing them. Safari shorts, however, still having a pocket on the outside are much sleeker, slimmer than many popular 'golf' shorts.

That said, I agree. Stop the offender in the clubhouse or starter.

Maybe for a normal guy but everything MJ wears has his logo on it. Everything! He can easily say Nike I need some golf shorts to my specs and it would be done. He has no excuses other than terrible taste. The gold hoop earring is proof enough.

I don't know, you play a nice private course wouldn't you think to wear something other than cargo shorts beforehand?

He is convinced the rules don't apply to him. That's why he wasn't able to join the two clubs he wanted to in Charlotte. And neither was the old money, old line Charlotte club.

So why are cargo shorts so bad for golf again? Not trying to be funny, I've just never seen any specific reasons laid out.

Where the mistake was made, they didn't call him on his clothing in the past. That makes doing it this time all the more difficult, least the person followed the rules and spoke up. Rules are rules for celebrity or... We play by and dress by the rules. Give someone like MJ an inch he's assuredly going to take what he wants, forcing the hand of others. He's just a retired basketball player... that's all.

No one said they are bad for golf. Just against this clubs policy. The two different clubs I've belonged to also had a no cargo shorts and tucked in shirts. I don't agree with it but I had to adhere to the rules.

I agree! Every pair of cargo shorts I've seen look pathetically baggy and wrinkled. Golf, by design, is a gentleman's game, and gentleman do not look like slobs. My last two clubs had rules: no cargo shorts or shorts with baggy outside pockets, and shirts that meet the rules must be tucked in.
