The Single Malt Scotch Thread

cardoustie

Recommended Posts

I thought we'd start a thread for all the single malt lovers out there in golfwrx land.

I am not a giant fan of the really peaty versions but I do know some chaps love the stuff

Just back from Scotland in late Sept and go to try some beauties, including a 33 yr old Tomintoul

Also of note, they do make a single malt in Nova Scotia here in Canada (big legal troubles as they used the prefix name Glen). I was also quite surprised to buy a great scotch from our local store that is called Hellyers Rd, out of Tasmania, Australia. Quite ironic as I was born there

Here is a list of the bottles I have owned / tried / finished. I have kept some of the cooler tins, especially the golf related ones

Another interesting note, I know some scotch bottles can be raffled for upwards of $75,000 but it was neat to see a selection of rare stuff at Glasgow duty free in the 3000-5000 pounds sterling range

My list isn't as extensive as the OP's, but I'm a scotch man too. Here is my short list:

Macallan 15, 18, 25 (had a glass of 25 at a company party where they said "open bar" until they saw how much each glass of the 25 year was, then they limited us to the 18 for the duration of the evening...)
Macallan 17 Fine Oak
Lagavulin 16 (recent favorite)
Johnnie Walker Blue
Bowmore 18
Ardbeg 10 (as smokey as they come....like drinking a cigar)
Honorable mention: Hibiki 12 which is a Japanese whiskey from the Suntory distillery and not "Scotch" but I really enjoyed this one and it was very smooth. Also reminds me of my favorite scene in Lost in Translation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_saLrADKqNM
Last but not least, my current go to single malt, Glenlivet 18. @ $60-70 a bottle, its probably the best bang for the buck out there right now.

Tobermory has some nice stuff right now... About 2 years ago it all jumped in price like 40%, though... Used to be a real steal for the quality/taste....

For the sake of clarification only... Johnny Walker Blue is a blend. Not a Single Malt. And IMO not worth the money. Not saying it is bad stuff. But then that is why I buy Famous Grouse for my at home libation.

Just out of interest: how much would you go through in a year?

Personally I'll only drink approx 1 bottle throughout the warmer months but as soon as it starts getting colder I'll go through about 1 bottle every 3 weeks.

I've already polished off a Glenmorangie and I'm 3/4 the way through a Jura Superstition. I'll usually get a couple of bottles for Christmas (hopefully, because once the Jura has gone I'm down to the "guests" whiskey: grouse and jamesons!)

Good point and I do agree with you that it's not worth the price tag.

On a side note, where do you buy your single malts from (besides bringing them home from the UK)? Bevmo doesn't have the widest selection. Do you guys order online from a specific site or have good liquor store in your area that you frequent?

NewLiquorCabinet12-11-12.jpg

How about we share photos of our current collection. Here is my very modest collection on my newly acquired liquor cabinet.

Here is what I have now:

The Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve

The Glenlivet 18

Bowmore 15

Hopefully adding the following over the next few weeks:

Ardbeg Uigeadail

Highland Park 12 or 18

Lagavulin 16

And another Glenlivet 18 because the one I have will be done soon

Just finished a 1982 glenfarclas from the family cask series. Bought it for myself for my 30th birthday (was born that year). Was bottled in 2010 and was 54.2 apv. Awesome stuff
Awesome! I've actually been thinking of buying a vintage from the year I was born too.

Anyone looking for a nice single malt on a limited budget should try the Grangestone 12. While not being very distinct it's only $25 and smoooooth.

Funny you mention that because I just got the notification email from my local Bevmo that they've restocked their supply of The Macallan Cask Strength that I've been meaning to try. Should be picking that up sometime this week!

My daily drink is Johnny Walker Green Label. I have a friend that owns a liquor store and he gave me the greatest deal ever on a case - cheaper by the bottle than retail for JW Black. He's a fine friend to have.

ah, single malt scotch. one of life's great pleasures. i've tried a bunch over the past year, too many to list (or remember), so here's my current top 3.

highland park 18 yr - received as a christmas gift from a very satisfied client about a week ago... really nice. smooth, with a little smoky burn at the end to let you know its there. i had previously only had the 12yr HP, which is also good, but this is at another level, in price and taste. highly recommend.
balvenie carribbean cask 14 yr - last 2 years are 'finished' in an previously used rum cask. my bourbon buddies really like it. sweet and smooth, but with a lot more depth than bourbon imho. if i am introducing scotch to somebody for the first time, this is my go-to. really highly recommend.
lagavulin 2011 cask strength limited edition - all the peaty smokey brine you could ever want in a glass. i hated it at first, but grew to love it by the end of my first drink. spectacular and strong, not for the faint of heart. a man's scotch. the best i've ever had.
