Random question. I've seen Macallan posting some pics of new drams on IG lately. Are they discontinuing any of the "traditional" offerings (i.e. 12 yr, 15 yr, etc)?

I guess like the Japanese makers, they can't keep up with demand and are also going the no age route.

I read that is wasnt so much keeping up, but the boutique bourbon boom of NAS bourbons has some what changed the mindset of age stated whiskeys. Im sure a part of it is demand as well

I can't speak for bourbons but I have been buying Japanese whiskey for 6 years or so. The price is now triple of what it was then and still supply is hard to come buy. So for Japanese whiskey demand is currently off the charts. I first started buying my Yamazaki 12 years old at $55 now even at $130-140 it is not easy to find. I'd buy JW double black, Singleton, even Monkeys shoulder before I spend more $100 for a 12 year old.

Got a bottle of 17 yr old Glenfarclas from a supplier yesterday. I'd had the 15 before.

 

It was REALLY tasty after 1 hr of shovelling out from the blizzard that hit last night

That's something I have yet to try shoveling snow :)

 

what I mean is I prefer almost all my alcohol with just 1 cube of ice the ice is a necessity because it is just so warm where I am. I would like to drink regularly where it is cold enough that you appreciate the warmth from the drink. Sort of like how Russians drink vodka.

I'm running low (my last holdouts are a Glenlivet 15 and a hibiki that are both almost done) and I've thought my next bottle would be either the glenfarclas 17 or 25. We have both on the shelf near where I am. I've cut back on scotch so much that it takes me a year to finish a bottle, so I'm good with splurging a bit, the 25 is like 150$ here

HP12 is definitely my favorite - can anyone recommend scotches to try that are similar?

Four Roses single barrel was pretty good too, super spicey. But thoroughly enjoyable

I wanted to like Lagavulin, but I think it's a little but too peaty for my underdeveloped palate

 

I realize these aren't all scotches, but the list of scotches I've tried is so small I figure I'd just throw everything out there

- oban14

- clynelish14

- glenlivet12

- johnnie walker black label

 

if you didn't like lagavulin, but want to try something along those lines (but palate friendlier):

- auchentoshan12

 

crossover scotches:

- balvenie carribbean cask 14

- balvenie doublewood 12

- balvelie single barrel (12 or 15)

- bowmore small batch bourbon cask aged

 

bourbon: i've really been loving buffalo trace. really really good.

 

irish whiskey wise:

- red breast

- jameson

 

 

good luck bud. i remember starting my scotch odyssey a few years ago with JWB with a ton of ice and a few splashes of club soda. i now can happily savor a lag16 with only a few drops of water. others, neat.

 

it's a fun process, take your time and enjoy the journey.

Just re-upped this weekend:

 

- Cragganmore 12 (never tried this one; anticipate it to be comparable to Mac12 or any of the Glen's)

- Oban 14

- Lag 16

 

And some Woodford Reserve to sip on while I debate which of the above to open first...
