Just re-upped this weekend:

- Cragganmore 12 (never tried this one; anticipate it to be comparable to Mac12 or any of the Glen's)

- Oban 14

- Lag 16

And some Woodford Reserve to sip on while I debate which of the above to open first...

I have the cragganmore 12! it's really good! haven't had in awhile so I can't remember anything to compare it to but I do remember it being a pleasant surprise...

My wife works for Brown Forman (Jack, Woodford, Old Forrester) and they just purchased three single malts that I'm not familar with; Glendronach, Benriach, and Glenglassaugh. I'm a big fan of scotch so this excites me, but I know nothing about any of the three brands. Can anyone shed any light on them?

I think you need to send 3 testers north to Uncle Cardy STAT

Glendronach is good stuff, if you like wine finished scotch. The 18 yr is aged exclusively in sherry casks so it is very rich, I enjoyed it though. Benriach is good as well, haven't heard of the third.

Macallan 12 and Balvenie DoubleWood 12 are staples in my collection, so I'm sure I'd love that 18. May have to seek it out now. Thanks!

Was in Total Wine this week and was in the Single Malt Scotch area looking, One of the guys asked if I needed a hand and I told him I normally drank Macallan 12 year old but was up to try something else if it were comparable. He pointed me out an 18-year-old Highland scotch called Grangestone for about the same money as the 12-year-old Macallan very happy to report it is excellent give it a try

And this is what I have been really into lately. The normal 10 year Jura is a good, cheap single malt ($44), but this Jura Superstition is absolutely brilliant ($55)! It is seriously a contender for one of the best single malts I have ever had. A little peaty/smokey with a subtle sweet finish similar to an XO cognac.

Never had scotch in my life. My oldest daughter decided I should learn to appreciate it or at least not fear it because of an upcoming trip next summer where she is hopeful of a couple of distillery tours. She brought home some 18 year old Glenmorangie on her Christmas break. I have nothing to compare it to, but smooooooth is all that keeps coming to mind. She went back to school last week, and I noticed the box with bottle inside was no longer on the counter when I got back for lunch that day. My wife told me my daughter was unusually concerned about my idea of a "wee" dram (hey I did the splash of water so it looked like more), I guess she was afraid I was getting too much of "her" supply, lol (I figured I should enjoy some after dinner every night if I was to learn about it). Guess she must really appreciate a fine scotch or is as cheap as her dad.

Not big into the Islay malts, I see, but at least you have a bottle of Lagavulin. You should try Ardbeg Uigeadail...it's fantastic.

Having a stiff pour of this. My ex-partner / boss gave it to me before X-Mas

Such a sad story

His 48 yr old daughter passed last week of breast cancer.

He also lost his wife at 48 to ovarian cancer 30 years ago as well. His two remaining children, sons, were t-boned by a dump truck years ago as teens. Both brain damaged, one severely.

Sigh

Unbelievably tragic. My former boss, later partner lost a child while she was in college - parents shouldn't outlive their kids and this story is just so sad.

Courtesy of my daughter taking her scotch back to school after introducing me to it, lol (she reminded me yesterday it was NOT a gift), and this thread, I decided to go to our local outlet (very limited) and found this which seemed to have some fairly positive reviews, but it's taste buds which can mean just about anything to anyone. Interestingly I can remember what the Glenmorangie tasted like and notice the differences between the two (I suppose the obvious ones). Strangely, took a little bigger sip with the first sip on this and it was a little overwhelming but after that it seemed to "settle in". No idea what I'm talking about, but based on my only two experiences, I'd have to say this is good as well.

I guess "nightcap", not in the form of 2% milk, is in my vocabulary for a few nights a week the rest of this winter.

Such a sad story. I suppose one of things we can take away from it is you never know what life will bring you. So try to enjoy the time you have with the people you love, however you can.

I like that Glenlivet 15, have you tried the Glenfiddich Explorer series? They are 19 year aged and finished in either sherry, port or bourbon casks. I had the port finished version and it was very good.

I ALWAYS have at least 1 bottle of Lagavulin 16 on hand. I have some Ardbeg - not sure if it is somewhere in the pic. I need to build a new scotch bar because I can't display all of my bottles. lol I do like the Ardbeg. Though, I could die a happy man with just some Lagavulin, Aberlour, and the Jura Superstition.

I am a big fan of cognac's when I have an occasional cigar, but the Jura Superstition can now be substituted since it has a slightly sweet finish.

GREAT THREAD!

Most certainly give it a try. I learned this from my wife's uncle. Every night after dinner, he pairs his cigar with a cognac. I fell in love with that combination. Her aunt and uncle are almost twice our age, but we go down to Pawley's Island every year for a beach trip and stay at their house. I don't know what my favorite part of the trip is; taking the kids to the beach, golfing with my wife's uncle, or having that cigar and cognac after dinner each evening and solving all of the world's problems together. lol

I recommend an XO cognac and if you live in a state that sell liquor at Costco, I highly recommend Kirkland's brand XO cognac. It's $50, but rivals $100+ bottles.

In my circle of friends, all the single malt lovers appreciate port (but not in a 1oz serving if you catch my drift)

My favourite port story. Aussie outback when I'm 19 (my only trip back home). We're on some massive sheep farm (100's of thousands of acres). No hot water and shearing sheep's arses to protect them from blowflies was quite an experience

Anyways, stayed up late one night with the farm owner (a distant relative), my dad, my twin and my Uncle. We drank enough port to kill a Clydesdale. After a beer soaked dinner, I think we had two of the 2L bottles (it wasn't the good stuff). The kangaroos were a little blurry the next morning

I've been a huge fan of single malts for a while now and I've successfully converted my wife over the past two years. She works for a company that owns three distilleries in Scotland (GlenDronach, Glenglassaugh and BenRiach) and we are venturing to Scotland in March and already have a few distillery tours lined up. Can't wait to try Balvenie at the source. One of the places we are staying is called the Highlander Inn, a tiny Inn in a tiny village in Speyside, but with one of the best whisky selections in Scotland. Check out the list below (if you are interested).

http://www.whiskyinn.com/_pdf/whiskylist.pdf

Oh, my current favorite sippers are BenRiach 16 (it's a retired scotch), GlenDronach Cask Strength Batch 3 and GlenMorangie Quinta Ruban (port finished). Cheers!
