Myrtle Beach February Trip

jrengler

Recommended Posts

Planning a short weekend trip for 8 guys to Myrtle in mid-February and was looking for ideas on a good opening course. Will be playing True Blue and TPC Myrtle the last two days, but looking at something for the first day to get people warmed up but enjoying themselves. Initial thought was The Witch or Heather Glen, but open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

From experience I'd not go to Myrtle in February. The odds of rain are slim but the temps will probably average in the upper 30's/low 40's.
Daytona Beach.

But my previous comments are meaningless... So... play a course that is overseeeded throughout. Not just the tees and greens. The last time i played in Myrtle the Witch was one of the courses overseeded throughout. And I liked the course.

PING G25 12 degree w/S+ @ 45"

Titleist 913Hd 20°

Try Glen Dornoch or the Witch. Either would be a good warm up.

Courses at barefoot are always good too. Myrtle beach National is also a good one and priced well.

Witch is a great first day warm up course. I would also look at Wicked Stick, Blackmoor, Wachesaw East, or Tradition as other good warm ups.

If you dont mind a drive i would do the Legends, Wizard or Man o War

Of the two choices you provide, I'd do 27 at Heather Glen and work out all the winter kinks. The Witch is a nice choice too. However... Both of these and the others you mention are all from different parent companies. You may want to look at booking through a multi-round package. Then select your warmup round accordingly from the available courses... Best of luck!

True Blue and TPC are south end courses. If you are staying in that area, why drive north for your other day? I'd play another course close to the two you mentioned. Willbrook is an under rated course. Also consider Caledonia, Pawleys Plantation or Founders Club. There is no reason your first round can't be a top tier course. I usually don't disagree with Sheppy on MB matters, but IMO these are much better choices than Wicked Stick, Blackmoor, Wachesaw East, Tradition, Wizard or Man o War. I also wouldn't worry about whether the rough is overseeded. Hitting from dormant rough is a piece of cake. The weather on the other hand is a legitimate concern. You can have some very chilly days in Feb, so bring the cold weather base layer and outer wear for cold days.

I tell anybody that mentions Myrtle that True Blue is a must, so good choice there.

If you're staying south, play Caledonia. I didn't get a chance to play it but after playing True Blue its on my list. If you're staying north, Man O' War is usually in good shape, and its a good course to get loose on. There's water on most holes, but most of the time the water is well out of play.

Anyone have thoughts on Prestwick? Another option we're looking at.

Prestwick is one awesome course and had the greens redone this summer. You will not be upset playing this course.

No hard feelings for disagreeing, you opinion is a very good one. Everyone has different ideas and not one is right!

You are correct weather will be a concern at that time of year! Always enjoy talking about Myrtle Beach golf.

Played TPC Mrytle yesterday and was not overly impressed.... The I obviously wasn't expecting perfect conditions in December.... They did get some rain earlier in the week so the fairways were sloppy! Overseeding took pretty good bu not great. Bunkers were in horrible shape. Couldn't even play out of most fairway bunkers. However the greens were great! Overall course layout is good and some great holes. Really impressed with the par 3's. the course was just not what I would expect from a TPC course. Also had to pay $8 for range balls. Normally included at Higher end courses. If it dries out and the bunkers and leaves get cleaned up Feb golf may not be bad there. But in that price range I would think there are some better options.

Played Barefoot Fazio yesterday and is by far one of the best tracks down here. Tough but fair layout and Champ Bermuda greens. From my experiences so far Barefoot is some of the best golf you will find down here. There were 2" of rain the night before and the course heard up 10 times better than the TPC. I have also played the Norman and Love at Barefoot and was equally impressed with the Love and the Norman is good but not as good. I'm playing the Dye course tomorrow and I'll let you know how that goes. The rates were also great! Call within 48 hours and it was on $68.00! Courses are over seeded and greens are awesome! I would see what they have to offer in Feb. Much better than TPC.

My in laws used to stay at breakers all the time before they finally moved here and the thoughts of staying at a days inn mortified them so I assume its a fine place. You might want to look at trying to get out at the dunes club. I've never played there but "best on the beach" is the most common thing I hear about it. Don't confuse it with the grande dunes, although that's a nice place too

The Dye Course at Barefoot was unreal. Fairways were perfect and The Champion Bermuda Greens were flying. Also as far as hotels go we go every year for New Years and have stayed at Most of the middle of the road condos. We stayed at North Beach Plantation this past week and it is by far the nicest place on the beach. Built in 09 and plenty of ammentities. You can also walk over to all the bars and restraunts at Barefoot Landing. $142 per night in a 2 bedroom with 1 king and 2 queens.

+1 - I'm a fan of the Dye course at Barefoot. The other BF courses are pretty good as well. TPC is a nice setting but it doesn't offer much variety on approach shots. Here is a link to photos. http://www.flickr.com/photos/golfcoursepix/collections/72157632004669462/
