These new colored drivers..

Tarkata

Recommended Posts

It used to be black, maybe a matte grey. Shinny grey. Speckled heads. I see Nike has a new fire red one, TM has racing strips a la teh Indy500.

I am sure once you use it -- you get used to it? There have been colored driver heads before. Orange to brownish from TM, the blue cobal colored one from years back. (I forget who made that one? Liquid Metal?) Many others.

I figure we are going to get color impregnated metal for irons, not just painted iron heads. So there's no wear marks....

How hard could it be to make red colored steel?

How do you feel about red and green and blue iron heads? - perhaps color coded by loft?

I see it coming.

Deal with that!

yeah

Looking at the Cobra pics from Orlando, it was all about color, bling, hip hop ect. ect. There is little in the way of deep pockets with this age group and the next generation will want something else other then this. If fact, the current want ta b's in there age group are a pain in the butt out on the course....loud music, little to no Etiquette and it's all about them.

Poor Cobra...headed down a short path and they better be ready to make a turn on that blind curve coming.

Are you suggesting that because the younger generation may like flashy colors in both their clothes and club choices that we don't have any money or etiquette, class, etc.??? Keep rocking those pleated khaki pants and shorts with the blue cotton polo shirt grumpy old man. Remember when your generation had Elvis and all of the adults thought the world was going to end? OR, *GASP* when Rock 'n' Roll became popular and everyone was the devil.

I wear the crazy clothes and while I am not a fan of the colors of the clubs (distraction to my eye) I have never once behaved in a way on the course that would cause me to be called classless, or lacking etiquette. Now loud music has absolutely nothing to do with income levels, class or golf but I understand that if its above NPR's whisper volume it may be offensive to some.

As for your deep pockets comment it just makes no sense. There are plenty of young men (and women) out there with disposable income that they are spending on golf equipment. If you are into golf and in the market for clubs it makes no difference if you make $75K or $750K, you are going to purchase clubs that appeal to you within a reasonable price range. It's not like the R1 or 913D is cheaper than the Amp Cell or Covert.

Ask yourself this....if TM came out with color schemes purely for marketing would you bash them???
(Hint: They already did)

To the OP, I think creating colored clubs would be more expensive than the OEM's would like (maybe not) but I would not be surprised at all by flashy grips, ferrules, paint fill, etc.

Why do you believe Cobra is headed down a short path? Similar things were said of TM for their white scheme. Now, others have a muted color scheme, not the shiny black that used to be found everywhere. Do you remember when computers were beige? Then gray. Then black. Now you can choose the color of your computer or laptop. Having options is nice!

Btw, I'm 39 and just bought Cobra irons partially because of the orange. And I'm not a newbie. Been playing 30 years and carry a 5 handicap. Love the fact that I can get a quality club in a color I want. That is awesome.

What kind of dump are you playing at that kids have music playing too loud? I have seen people play music on a golf course very few times. Once was an outing with more drinkers and hackers than golfers. It was a blast, had way too much fun, and too much beer and Crown. Another time was at this stuffy old country club. This guy Al Czervick broke open a pocket of his bag to reveal a car stereo, and starting blaring Journey! By the way, DO you get a free bowl of soup with that hat?

I think the color thing is ok if color options are available. Something for everyone. I'm am a Cobra fan boy. I wasn't a big fan once some of the Cobra stuff came with color. The Cobra S2 irons hit the mark with me because they perform and I love black and gold. Then came the orange and electric yellow on some stuff. I passed on all the orange stuff. I just couldn't stand it no matter how good it was. I bought the black Encore with electric yellow and a t-rail hybrid because they performed for me and I could get by with the electric yellow. I recently bought a new Encore in red. So the color did get me to buy it. For me red, black and gold are my favorite colors .
I am excited about the Amp hybrid ,you can get it in red or gray but that stock shaft with the color graphics is a turn of for me. If that t-rail+ works for me I might get that because it has colors that I like. For me it has to perform first then if I like the looks I'll consider buying it. Cobra just about lost me with the Puma take over. They got me for two Encore drivers and a hybrid when I wanted to also get new irons and the rusty wedges but they were a turn off with their looks.
Call me whatever but that is the way I think. If I don't like the looks of it I can't bag it no matter how good it is. I don't care about all the colors as long as the oem makes sure they offer the traditional color too.

No I am not suggestion that...worded poorly, sorry. The problem child's I see at the CC's around here are targeted by Cobra because that path is wide open since the other OEM's go down a different path and to me IMHO arre a more long term profitable choice. Face it, Cobra knows it's peckin order in the industry and it's not 1, 2, or 3 and I will stop there.

As for your question to me about TM Bling....I think the AdiZero line up color wise is very poor and will fail when compared to the past offerings...weight wise, right path. Current color choices, wrong path. I can bash TM no problem.

Well done...and a nice shot at TM which is very true and quite funny honestly, but my comment about Cobra has nothing to do with a certain OEM I like or support. It has to do with who they are targeting and how "some" of that demographic behavior on the courses.

Cobra has some nice items that I think are bling free and I bet are great items...but most of the line up the past years are targeting a certain age group and I feel that is a poor financial choice IMHO...might be right, might be wrong...just an opinion.

Mainly at CC's and member/guest events...I stopped going to these because of this....my choice plain and simple. I do not see any reason for loud music on a golf course, be it a dump or a CC....again, this is just my opinion.

Ok, ok I see what you are getting at with that argument and to a certain point I do agree with you. BUT, those problem children usually have deep pockets via dads deep pockets and if Cobra can get them to like their equipment when they are young punks wouldn't it make at least some sense that they may continue to like Cobra as adults? I certainly know that's what happened with me for Titleist (without the flashy colors and marketing) but I grew up with titleist clubs and now I always tend to gravitate towards them. Could be just me.

As for the Adizero comment I could not agree more. I love the shoe itself, just wish the color options were better. They look like awesome shoes though.

I think we agree more than we disagree now that I think about it...haha

What does "traditionalist" mean? What clubs they played last year? 5 yrs ago? 20 yrs? 100? Can you call yourself a traditionalist when the clubs you play bear no resemblance to what Arnold Palmer used? Maybe color is traditional since Persimmon clubs were not black, and rusted irons had some red in them. Lol

Problem child's on the golf course... The funny thing is you "older" folks lack respect sometimes as well, Thursday while playing Metrowest while one of my playing partners was teeing off a foursome of older gentlemen drove up in the fairway close to the tee. As my friend was in the middle of his swing one of the old guys puts his wife on speaker phone in the middle of his back swing so his buddies could hear her, sounded like she was on a loud speaker, total disrespect. When I turned & said, "You kidding me, you put your wife on speaker phone on a crowded course." we didn't even get an apology, only a dumb a** look on their faces. So lack of respect doesn't come from just us "young" people it sometimes comes from all especially the older folks who think they sometimes own the course. I play out of a old club where a lot of members have their noses in the air, & sometimes when I practice I put music on my iPhone but not when the course is packed & think it will disturb someone, have never received a complaint. Never had a problem with the younger junior golfers ever.

It can mean a lot of things, that's why I put in quotes. Some might call me a "traditionalist", because I don't prefer a lot of graphics and bright colors on my clubs. I don't want colored medallions in the back of my irons and don't what see a bright color with any large logos when looking down on a driver. It's not really a big deal, just a true preference.

All that said, performance is number one, so I won't use any club that will have a performance disadvantage for the characteristics that I look for in a given club.

I hate to admit it but the new Cobra drivers look great in Red and Blue. We must remember wooden heads were every shade you could think of from black to clear laminate and anything else you could imagine....when I was a junior I had a faithfull Ryder 4 wood that was a fetching shade of turquoise. My 3 wood was red lacquer and my driver a golden colour so not much has changed..

New?

I had a gray head TM Midsize Driver in `95; A copper head TM Driver in `97 with bubble shaft; and oh yeah a persimmon head in the `60s-`80's
:D

I will be getting a new Driver this year...upgrading (I hope) from a 7 yo Titleist 905R (black heads for the past 15 years all Titleist).
The color/graphics of the head will be the last thing on the list that determines whether I buy it or not.
And I will be trying all of them this year before buying.

Yeah, it's funny I was at an indoor simulator place today and there was a rack of clubs free to try. MOST of the older drivers were gray, and there was a few old navy ones as well.

So maybe the current stuff isn't too wacky!

I prefer my drivers black or at least a dark shade. I don't like the white or the graphics of a lot of these heads. I can understand the white/grey/silver in a solid color. Graphics on the crown are ridiculous though .

Hmmm. I went out to demo drivers. I picked up a red one. I saw it had a swoosh on top. I took it outside to the demo range. As I set it up behind the ball, I was looking at the face to make sure I was set up squarely; didn't notice the color or graphics. Then I was looking at the spot on the golf ball where I wanted to make contact; didn't notice the color or graphics. Then I was watching the ball flight, a beautiful mid-launched laser straight shot that ran like a scalded dog when it landed; didn't think about the color graphics. Now I've got one on order, and certainly not because of how it looks.

Did I notice the color and graphics? Sure. Did they matter? Not in the least. If you dismiss equipment out of hand simply based on looks as opposed to performance, well that's your loss. Too often the same mistake is made with persons as well. Sad.

Ironically you are from Eugene, where the Owner of Nike went to school, and invests money (ie. Jaqua center), of course you like their products. lol I have no problem with their new red driver, however I do have a problem with my "$400" Nike driver that is less than a year old, could be brought for under $100 this last summer. Their clubs don't hold value, and it's not worth investing in unfortunately.
