Never broken 80 with rental clubs.

I find the rental putter and driver to often be the bane of my scoring.

 

I just can't seem to put it all together.... :(

 

Any recommendations beyond carrying my clubs with me?

(That gets expensive at $100 each way)

I dunno... I don't mind trying to hit with clubs other than my own but I think i'd rather deal with the expense of shipping my own gear with me if i knew I was going to a place where I could squeeze in a round or two.

If your score is going to impact your enjoyment, then you gotta travel with your own clubs.
Fly Southwest and it's free. If you're travelling in the same region, Fedex can do it for $30 or so.

I get your pain. I travel a lot (a ridiculous amount in fact). I personally have a "two round" rule. If I am likely to play one round at my destination, I'll rent clubs (knowing it is totally hit or miss, and I won't shoot as well, or have quite the same enjoyment). If I am likely to play two or more rounds, it is worth it to take my own clubs.

The $100 each way the OP states is puzzling ... if you are flying coach on most US airlines, I think it is $50 a bag, no?

PS. I have a Scotty travel putter, that fits diagonal in my normal large travel suitcase ... so even when it is on a "one round" trip, I still have my own putter (and it is amazing how comforting it is to have that single club).

I've looked into FedEx ... it is generally a lot more expensive than that, no?

Don't worry about it. I don't think I have either. But then again, look at the kind of equipment you get: Regular wippy shafts, shovels for irons with no feel or shot shaping ability, putters that do not even remotely resemble or feel like your own.

$100 each way? First checked bag is free on jet blue and some other airlines. Most of the rest I think it's more like $25-50.

I have yet to pay to take my bag on a trip.

You have to decide what is important to you. A few bucks or satisfaction. (I've heard that there are girls who cover both bases. )

I played with a guy 2 years ago in Oahu who shot 75 on a hard course with less than adequate rentals. Then again, he was talented.

That's why I added the caveat of same region. I've shipped San Fran to Vegas and San Fran to Palm Springs... just looked up my Visa bill, it was $37.
So ya lets call it $40 and again these are short 2 day routes. I am sure cross continent or cross Atlantic could get expensive.

For me on both occasions it was for ease of shipping them, as opposed to wholly a price issue.

United from sfo to Maui, $100 each way...$200 if it weighs over a 100 lbs (sometimes you stuff all kinda gear in that golf carry!!!!!)
$200 round trip and $150 a round..,yeah I know, if ur worrying about the money, you've already lost something...

Oh well, regardless, how bad can it be to be in Maui in February?...

I have a friend that takes only his driver and putter. Take the head odd driver put that in suitcase. Shaft you protect and tape to putter shaft and you can sometimes get that on carry on. If your nice. As long as you have those two you can cope with the old Bertha iron rentals

I recently played a course in the Bahamas. We stayed at Emerald Bay, a resort owned by Sandals. Holes 11-16 are right on the ocean, great holes and [u][b]grea[/b][/u]t views!! We rented clubs. Mine were meant for someone who was seven feet tall! I would take my grip and an inch to and inch and half of the grip would be sticking out and the the toe of club was sitting at least half and inch off the ground. I must have hit 20 pull hooks. My wife had clubs that had full grips on about half the clubs. We both scored terrible but the course was really really good and I would love to play it again with my own clubs.

Since the course was so beautiful and liquor was all inclusive I managed to suck it up and we had a great time!
