Favorite classic Musclebacks??

Recommended Posts

Since we've had few classic blade threads... I think it's about time we hear about your favorite classic Muscle Back's, I've always had an eye for Mb's and it's about time I start looking for another classic set.... so I'd like to hear what your favorite classic MB gamers are, and how they've performed.

Very easy on the eyes.
Now you had to post a pic of a Murfield didn't you. Please stop. At the moment it's taken all my effort not to buy a set of Murfield 20th's that I've spotted locally...

I've taken the last decade off from golf... eh... maybe more like 15 years...

A couple months ago, I found a set of Dynacraft Tour Caliber blades at Goodwill for $10... Not the ones in the pictures, but just like them... They were in nice playable shape and are largely responsible for my renewed interest in golf... To my surprise, I've been hitting them very well in the simulator... Can't wait for the snow to go away... I mean really... I can't wait for the snow to go away...

Honestly though... I really want a nice set of Forged Ram Tour Grinds... I got the sickness for those back in the late '90s when I was doing some work for the company... I did get a set of the Nickel cavity back TGs with graphite shafts and a couple of the musclebacks... I should have gotten the full set of nickel muscles... they were sweet... but oh well, life struck right after that and I lost track of the game... I still have most of those clubs...

and also, a pic of my Dynacrafts... and a Gigagolf 7 iron replacement in there as well...

Question to you guys:

And there may be some grey area here, but what's the difference between blade and muscleback?
And the can of worms is open! :)

I guess it depends on the "purity" of one's definition. In strictest terms, blades are heads in the style of those found in the hickory golf era; thin and of uniform thickness.

Start putting more mass behind the sweetspot (and by doing so, varying the head's thickness) and you've got a muscleback.

Especially since the advent of cavity backs, these lines have been blurred to the extent that many musclebacks (e.g. someone's favorite nasty Hogan 1-iron) are referred to as blades. In it's broadest use, the term "blades" has almost become synonymous with "old-school irons".

It's easier to call them all musclebacks these days, because old school blades without any weight redistributed are pretty much extinct. I had a set of Pinseekers (mid-80s I think) which were among the last true blades and they were horrible. Compared to the 40s era blades, the MacGregor wing backs seen above are like hitting a SGI iron. I'd put my old M75s or M85s into play today because they're just 2 clubs shorter (2 iron plays like a current MB 4 iron) but the grind is a bit too harsh (i.e. there was no grind - mine were not custom built).

yea... you can get into slippery slopes with anything, but in my head, a muscleback is a blade... or perhaps more appropriately, pretty much any non-cavity iron is a blade

I have two sets of TGs and two set of Aussie blades. The TGs have been in the bag for the last year until I recently started playing MP 32s. I found a mint set of TG heads and threw some KBS Tours in them and they pretty freakin marvelous. One of my sets of Aussies is just like the set Johnny Hack posted. I haven't played them yet cause I need to bend and reshaft them. Looking forward to it. Think they're Japanese forgings. Gotta put these beauties in play.

Yeah.. Golden Ram Tour Grinds. They're disgustingly beautiful and basically epic. I was puring a 2 iron at the range today and it's indiscribabble. That's when I know my swing is in really good shape.. otherwise forget it.

I can't agree with the microscopic part.

I have played a lot of rounds with assorted Ram Tour Grinds over the years, my first set were Frequency Matched Golden Rams. I've tested the so called lack of forgiveness, hitting shots way out on the toe with a Golden Ram 5 iron and an A10 6 iron (as one example), only to find the balls within 2 yards of each other. And the Ram shot went farther. :)

Now, being topical....

Really like Rams, obviously. Also like the look of the Mizuno MS-11s. And, a set I don't often see referenced, the 1976-77 Powerbilt Scotch Blades, except for that set's PW, LOL. That flat back of the Powerbilts is quite lovely IMHO.

There really are a lot I like, FG-17s and/or 78 Staffs, Muirfield 20ths, Palmer Standards, 986 Tours, Golfsmith Professional Grinds, and so on. Gotta admit I don't really care for Apex Redlines, though I like a fair number of other Apex models.

Top for me are the Rams, though. :pimp:

Hey NRJyzr,

I think we've bumped into each other previously in our admiration for the TGs. Pretty sure you gave me a bunch of specs on them. Are yours the "Axials"? Both sets of mine are, circa '81 I think.
