Sergio's iron shafts

Anyone else notice that Sergio is using the Nippon Modus 3 shafts in his irons? I'm guessing he's using the Tour x 120's or proto's, can anyone confirm?

The Nippons seem to be popular with the European players, I know Paul Casey uses them and there are several other of the top players.

I believe they are the new Tour 130's.
[/quote]Doubt if they are the Tour 130's, the 130 profile is high launch and spins more than the Modus 120. The 120 modus tour x flex is 128 gram so I would think at that weight they would be popular with the players.

I was told by Nippon's U.S. Distributor at the PGA Merchandise Show that they are the N.S. Pro Modus 3 Tour 130X.

I was at a demo day last year talking with a Nike rep and he gave me a sleeve of 20xi's to try. I knew that the 20xi ball was not being used by their tour pros and I wanted to see what he would say if I asked him how the ball was received. I was told that "All" their pros use the 20xi ball and love it. I am not saying that your information is wrong, or that the distributor you spoke with was incorrect, I am just saying that the information we get may not always be 100% correct.

They are significantly closer to the 130's than 120's. I do not believe the 130's are higher launch and spin

Sorry to necro an thread, I've researching Modus 130's, but I just have to say there is a HUGE difference between the PGA Merchandise show and a demo day. PGA Merchandise show you're going to have access to top level guys in the know. Demo Day you just get some tech who was trained to say nothing but retail and latest model. Often Demo Day guys don't even know much about the same OEM's offerings from a few years ago because they are trained to focus on current retail offering. Zak isn't one to be hoodwinked with marketing gibberish either.

I just got a set of 588 MB's with Nippon proto code 2G18, which I believe if very close to the Tour 130's if not the exact same shaft with a proto code. Trying to find more info if anyone has any. Would love some Nippon representation to chime in, but I'm not sure GolfWRX has any. I'd love a rundown like a launch/spin chart or characteristics of all the Nippon proto's and which they are closer to, Modus 120's or 130's?

From what I can gather:
Tour 120's are Butt soft, mid-stiff mid seciton, and tip stiff. Think Whiteboard of the iron world. So lower launch and lower spin but because of soft butt section reduces feedback slightly. Lag players could experience feeling of being stuck. More for smoother/classic players looking for forward shaft lean and lower trajectory.
Tour 130's are butt stiff, mid stiff, softer tip so it has a quick initial launch but lower spin. It is also slightly counter balanced. Think PX performance but with a mid-section that is stiffer and a tip that is softer for an even flatter apex and much smoother feel. Sergio plays it, so that should tell you, if you're a lag player, or a late transition guy, you should be looking at this shaft. Because the butt/mid sections are so stiff, you can probably look at Stiff if you are on the cusp of S/X. There is a reason they don't make a TX in the Tour130 version.

Is it possible for a mod to send a polite request to Nippon to give us a little rundown of their prototype models?

Proto's I know of or have played are 2S14, 2F15, 2G18, 2T15, C10, ORA, E11, ST, and DP. I have played/hit the 2S14, 2F15, ORA, C10, and 2G18. 2S14 is stiff throughout the shaft, very heavy, and low launch/spin. 2F15 is slightly counter balanced, I think the first iteration of the Tour 130 but more PX feeling (Kind of harsh IMO.) 2G18's feel smoother yet stiffer, I think they are basically the Tour130's with a proto code (Sergio's model.) C10's are Super Peening Blue-ish so Superhigh kick, lower launch but softer than the 2S14's. Supposedly E11 is C10-ish but lighter weight. ORA is like Super Peening Orange, so mid-to-high kick, but lower than C10's, more spin, softer feel. DP is dual performance and is like flighted shafts (lower launch short irons, higher launch long irons.) ST I've heard is softer tip so it elevates quickly and then flattens out. No clue on 2T15?

Per nippon, the 130s are a higher launch and the 120s lower. I put the 120s in my wedges, but the s400 are lower.

That makes sense to me. With his lag and hand action, he must be a very low ball hitter. Having the extra weight, but the softer bottom of the shaft would probably suit him very well.
